China invents new device to catch drug addicts

BEIJING: Chinese scientists have invented a device that can detect a drug user simply from the way his pupils react to certain rays.

The technology, developed by scientists in South-western Yunnan province, bordering the ill-famed 'golden triangle', has proved successful in six pilot projects in local villages, and have passed the assessment of the ministry of public security, the state media reported on Monday.

In the tests, 891 cannabis smokers were mixed with 826 non-drug takers. The device was able to catch 93.94 per cent of the addicts if they smoked the drug the day before the test, and 88.52 per cent of them if they did it six days before.

No non-drug takers were mistaken for smoking the drug in the tests, scientists with the department of science and technology said.

For addicts to opium or its related drugs, lights of certain wavelength and intensity make their pupils expand and contract, they said, adding that the new device can find out "how much a person is addicted to drugs."

The technology is obviously more advanced than similar detection techniques applied by police across the country, and it will be a good help if promoted nationwide, the scientists said.

What an absolute crock. They claim it can detect "how much of an addict someone is"???? Just exactly how is that supposed to work? Wasn't aware there was an addiction rating scale. Oh and of course that old chesnut appears again 'the cannabis addict', some sort of shady character akin to the Scarlet Pimpernel. They seek him here, they seek him there, that damned illusive cannabis addict.

Wonder what the detection ratio is like for alcos?

I'm going to buy Bongo some contact lenses. Bongo has monocular vision - genetic. Bongo was stopped by a cop and grilled for having "Your eyes look funny." One of his eyes is always looking in a different direction acting as a range-finder. So they shift in directions depending on where he is looking. It took Bongo ten minutes to explain this to Occifer Pinhead. Then Bongo got mad at himself for not kicking the occifer in the nuts.

I'll get one red contact and the other yellow.

Opiates cause pupils to contract, and it is quite obvious. Marijuana can cause mild pupillary dilation and slower contraction with exposure to light. Amphetamine, hallucinogenics, dissociatives dilate pupils, making the iris almost disappear at high doses. Creating a device with known standards to quantify pupillary reaction time and size could be created. It might actually be able to quantify serum levels of a chemical. Who knows, but I hope the government jealously guards their secret !

Not considering synthetic opiods like methadone, opium or heroin are cleared out of even the most hardcore addicts body by the 48 hour mark and thats a very generous estimate. Sure you'll be able to point them out as the ones grimacing and sweating, but how will this effect their pupils?

You don't need a machine, I'm sure a person trained to look for contraction or dilation and a flashlight would be just as effective.

This technology seems quite sound actually... If one uses opiates the night before, the pupils will be constricted more than usual the next day. The problem is, many other things can have effects on pupil dilation and constriction. Psuedoephedrine, DXM and many prescription drugs WILL effect pupil size. Caffeine may even have an effect on this.

Well, I perfectly undertstand the sound basis for determining if somebody has taken drugs (but as 'Sands of time' says whether they are legal or not is another matter). What I fail to see any logic in is the claim that the machine can detect "how much a person is addicted to drugs". You may be able to estimate how much they have consumed and even possibly give a guess at time of consumption (but again I think this is really stretching it...and I don't mean the pupils). Quite apart from anything else, the use of the word "addict" is as flawed as ever.

The language of the article is definately poor. A machine cannot tell if someone is 'addicted' to drugs. However, it doesnt sound completely outragous that they have developed technology that can decipher if a person was using or not. It would not surprise me if, someday soon, police will have devices of this nature that they can use like breathalyzer machines.

PILOT PROJECT TO USE EYE-SCAN TO DETECT DRUG ABUSE AMONG STUDENTS

A scanner that can detect drug abuse via an eye-test will be evaluated at a secondary school in Kuala Lumpur next month in a pilot project to determine the effectiveness of the technology.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar said a foreign company has recently demonstrated the device here and the Education Ministry will be keen on obtaining the scanners if the pioneer project is successful.

However, Noh did not disclosed the name of the technology that will be undergoing trials at the school in May.

I wonder if anyone bothered to take into consideration the fact that when you're withdrawing (any kind of 'hangover' counts as WD), your various organ systems enter a 'reversal' mode that is theoretically 'equal but opposite to' the actual effects of the drug.

in other words, people who have recently been on a meth binge have constricted pupils. those who have taken a ride on the H train will have enlarged pupils... any thoughts? or does this tester just discover anyone and everyone who has abnormally responsive pupils, and therefore they are "some kind of doper, and here's the proof."

I hope it's pure BS, otherwise SWIM may be travelling less in China! I think that actually being under the influence of drugs is a crime in China.

Five or six of my friends have that same or similar conditions with their eyes. I remember one time being pulled over with one of those friends, he was stoned off his ass and also on something else (I forget what), and he got away because he explained his eyes to the cop! He said he does it all the time and he's actually thankful for the eyes haha.

As for the scanner, I can see it now..
