North American Mandrake-(Podophyllum peltatum)
SMALL DOSE.
It is a gastro-intestinal irritant, a powerful hepatic and intestinal stimulant.
LARGE DOSE
Nausea and vomiting, and even inflammation of the stomach and intestines, which has been known to prove fatal.


Podophyllum rhizome is said to be most active when it is beginning to shoot. It is used almost entirely in the form of podophyllum resin. The resin is prepared by making a tincture of the rhizome, removing from this the greater part of the spirit by distillation and pouring the remaining liquor into water acidified with hydrochloric acid. By this means the resin is precipitated, and may be collected and dried.
Dosages Podophyllum resin, 1/4 to 1 grain.

IT contains tropane alkaloids and has a delerient effect. Not in any way recreational and potentially dangerous.

you can extract mandrake by cooking the root.Like mentioned, its a delirium and you should read about the dangers to atropine alkaloids and understand it before even thinking about experimenting with it. I have found small dosages of datura to be great for lucid dreaming other than that I havent dared experimenting atropine alkaloids any further.

mandrake is best grown on soil where blood has been spilled

These plants were known as the "witching herbs" during the middle ages and many depictions of hell from this period contain references to what it is like to be under the influence of Datura. The movie hellraiser is full of references to the tropane delerients. Very interesting allright.

You have to make an oitment! don't ever use mandrake orally, it's a deadly poison (contains atropine, hyosciamine, scopolamine and mandragorine)...and even if swallowed in low enough doses not to make you trip it would still make you feel very sick and vomit, with some very bad stomach pain)
On the other hand, smoking the leaves/flowers is somewhat safer.
Using it as an oitment (=transdermally) is still very very dangerous but much safer than oral use (this is also true for all other solanaceae plants)

The witches ointment was made by boiling very very finely powdered mandrake root in lard for 4 hours (on low boil), adding some organic soot to the mix (to basify the mix), strirring very often. Then you allow the mix to sit in a dark place for 1 or 2week, stirring 4 times a day at least. Then you filter through a piece of cloath (fucking wear some gloves !!!), squeezing/pressing well in order to recover all the lard (throw away plant material)
Store in an aitight container in a dark cool place until use.

Note that organic soot is made by placing some piece of fat into foil parcel, and placing it in the fire (or very hot oven) until it's fully carbonized and only ashes remain, but as it's meant to basify the mix, one might also use edible lime (the one used for the bettle nut chew which is pretty safe) to serve the same purpose.

Now how to use the ointment:

Witches used to spread it...
-over their temples
-under their armpits
-over their vagina
-just behind their ears
-over their neck
-over the interior part of their forearm
-over the left part of their stomach
-over their calves
-and under their sole (of the feet).

NEVER spread any on your forehead (risk of death).

I would suggest starting with only the temples & armpits (very suitable areas for transdermal absorption).

Note that the calves & sole are for producing a feeling of flight (I don't know about other areas specificties).

NOTE (!!) that there is a more elaborated preparation (and prossibly SAFER) for the ointment explained in castaneda's books (in "The Teachings of don Juan" or "A Separate Reality", I don't remember which one exactly)...

I never tried any ointment myself but many reliable books about shamanism and entheogens I read do claim that making an ointment is the safest way to go if one would want to get hallucinations from solanaceae plants, and they say that oral use is just too risky (the ointment is the shaman & witches method so I just trust it, they know their stuff).

How to dose the ointment?
First get a sitter!
Then spread some (very very little) on the mentionned areas and wait to see if anything happens.
If nothing happened, then wait 3 days before attempting another trial using more (not too much !), still with your sitter.
If I guess right (again I have no experience with solanaceae ointments), at some point of your progressive doses trials (spacing each trials 3 days apart) you will start getting physical effects, meaning only unpleasant anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision), but with no mind trip. Once you'll have reached this point, that means the active deliriant dose isn't much far from your current dose.

North American Mandrake(Podophyllum peltatum) is not the same species as Mandrake(atropa mandragora ).
I'd aggree with genaro that you should make an ointment since it(root) is a powerful emitic when taken orally, low doses were used for this purpose in folk medicine.

I also heard somebody who ate a tiny bit of some root and had very bad stomach pain and vomiting (with no mental effects, just gastrointestinal toxicity)

According to http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/m/mandra10.html it is the root which is emitic, the leaves are supposed to be harmless, but I guess that would mean they are devoid of any alkaloids.
A safe way to use mandrake would be to grow it and make a lucky charm from the grown root. This charm was worth a lot in the old days.
Is it just a myth that they grow best in soil where blood has been spilled? I am currently growing Mandrake and wouldn't mind loosing a few drops of blood to make it a strong and healthy specimen

The legend of the Mandrake is that these humanoid plants grow under the gallows, having sprung from the semen of hanged men -and that when they are uprooted they give off a terrible scream which will instantly kill any living creature that hears it. The only way to harvest a Mandrake is to rope a starving black dog to the plant and then tempt the animal with some fresh raw meat. The dog will then dash forward plucking the mandrake from the ground -but that very action combines the lethal scream of the mandrake with strangulation by the rope. The unfortunate dog will perish -but you do now have a juicy, freshly harvested, mandrake. So the legend says.

to sunyata: maybe flowers/fruits and leaves arn't emetic but they do contain great amounts of atropine/scopolamine that's for sure ! Leaves aran't safe, just a tiny bit less toxic than roots.

I always heard it was urine, not semen. Maybe it's a more PC version, but then again i do think pissing one's pants is more common during strangulation than ejaculation.

I looked into it apparently urine and feces can also be part of the bodily function game as well during hanging, women and men are apparently diapered.
apparently there's a difference between the so-called "long drop" hanging (employed by western jurisprudence in recent times) and "short drop".
Apparently the long drop has the force to kill instantly, but also causes rectal and vaginal prolapse -- the tearing out of internal organs and discharge through lower orifices.

As I recall, this may have occured here in the UK with the last woman who was executed - Ruth Ellis. It may be urban lagend, but I believe the details regarding her execution were never released, and such an event is rumoured to have occured. Some embellishments of the theory suggest that she may have been pregnant. In any case there was a terrific public outcry over the execution, and (imo the disgusting act of) hanging was abolished in the following years

To make an ointment, you should not boil the fat, this is dangerous(it is extremely hot) , and the substance you want to get in the fat will burn.
One must use the au bain marie method,
so the fat does not reach a higher temperature than 100°C
