Smoker or Non-Smoker

Please note you can enter more than one response.

I dont think this was done yet, so i just wanted to find out the forum ratio to smokers/non-smokers. Plus I havent done a poll yet!
Please post your opinions on cigarettes as well, and if you think tobacco should be banned. Also do you think there would be much 'unrest' if governments were to do so. The recent thread regarding the smoking ban in public places got me thinking about this again. Please be sure to mention where you are from. Here in North America smoking has become very unpopular and I personally dont think there would be much of a huff if cigarettes were criminalized.
I threw cigars and hookah in there just for fun, and i set the poll to allow multiple answers. Cheers.

I for one am a smoker personally even though it is not healthy for me I would like to choose whether I want to smoke or not, I don't like when other people try to make decisions for me instead of choosing my own route of how I want to live my live so no I do not support tobacco being criminalized. I also think there would be a big huff over its legality....it is a billion dollar business, do you know what kind of effect that would have? More taxes on other items for one....jobs lost etc.

Even though it is harmful to people that doesn't mean we need to criminalize it as that will create a black market, that would lead to violence and more people in jail for nothing.....it would reduce the amount of people that used tobacco but there would still be a market for it just like there is for many other illegal drugs...

In the end you have no one else to blame but yourself if you die from smoking, it is your choice/fault....as with other substances that may be legal or not....but I like having the choice and in the end every user has a choice whether to use a substance regardless if it's against the law or not....

I smoke cigs daily and cigars occasionally, when I come across one - though I hate to smoke cigars because there's better uses for them, if you know what I mean.

I hate tobacco but I don't think it should be banned. Not sure whether I believe the smoking age being 18 is right, since I had plenty of nicotine fits before I became of age when I didn't have anyone to buy them for me (I even resorted to walking to highly-trafficked places in the middle of the night for snipe hunting). Trying to quit currently, was smoking a pack a day for two years or so and now getting down to 5 cigs a day - since I haven't been smoking for all that long, it shouldn't be too hard to quit, but I've got this really addictive personality that wants to grasp and use every substance as often as possible.

When you say North America I know there's no way in hell you're talking about my town, or any one I've lived in for that matter . Just about everyone I know smokes cigs. Hell, I'm smoking one right now.

SWIm said he is not a smoker. He has smoked a few cigs in his day but now hates them and gets sick even inhaling the second hand smoke.

SWIJ smokes at least 20 a day: Marlboro Menthols because (weirdly) she can't bear the taste of non-menthol cigarettes. She knows the risks but actively enjoys smoking. She has had multiple (half-hearted) attempts at giving up, mainly because she thought she ought to. In the face of an upcoming ban on smoking in enclosed public places in the UK she guesses she will spend a lot of time standing outside pubs and clubs in the rain. As for banning tobacco... Well the NHS for one would crumble because of the lost tax revenue.

SWIJ firmly believes in an individuals right to engage in self-harming behaviour.

Yes. Again. Just can't seem to kick that bitch... but there should be
an "occasionally" option or something as well.

I agree with everyone who said tobacco should not be banned. It would
be stupid and pointless. There's no way they can eradicate it. Plus, if
they make it illegal their greedy asses won't be able to tax the shit out
of it. And imagine the uproar that the millions of people who are truly
addicted would make. I know a lot of people who flip out if they have to
go 2 hours without a cigarette. Just my $0.02 though.

Thanks for adding that extra option sit. And i totally agree with you in that the industry itself would put up a big fight. Thats alot of jobs and money on the line, the tobacco industry is fairly big.
But i must clarify my position a little. First, I am not just a smoker-I'm a fucking hardcore smoker. Pack a day from day one and now its about 2 packs a day. And I agree with everyone else who said that whatever you put in your body is your own damn business, and governments shouldnt but in.
What i meant was there would be no major public outlash. I wont bother with stats, but I think it is fairly safe to say that non-smokers are in the majority now, in North America anyway. Sure we smokers would bitch if they were banned. We bitched when the price went up. And the price kept going up. We bitched when we couldnt smoke in public. And we still cant smoke in public. The companies bitched when they couldnt advertise. And they still cant advertise. Baseball players bitched when they couldnt chew anymore. And still the spitoons are gone from the dugout.
And smokers? How many people come up to you and say that"those will kill you someday?". Do you ever feel like a second class citizen when you light up? Ever get embarassed when you light up in someones car or house and they tell you"please go outside"
My point is, as much as i love smoking and beleive that it is a right, Tobacco is on the way out. The people are speaking-loud and fucking clear. But more importantly I think this all points out very clearly the hypocrisy of government, more so than the Marijauna/alcohol comparison. On one hand we have Marijuana, and illegal substance. There is a large portion of the population that want it legal. On the other hand we have Tobacco. There is a large portion of the population that want it illegal. And in the middle we have governments trying to decide whats best for everyone, spouting out stats about health and trying to regulate everything. When really it all boils down to economics, and, more importantly, culture, way of life, and peoples right to choose for themselves.
ha, listen to me ramble. I should have said all this last nite, but i was in a rush. And i have more to say about it, but thats enough for now. Discuss amongst yourselves. Cheers

I've smoked occasionally since I was twelve years old, but I've never been addicted. I find that strange since I do have a tendency to become reliant on certain substances. I had been smoking tobacco daily for about the past 6 months, but quit pretty unintentionally because I simply had forgotten to smoke. I do smoke cannabis daily though. Oh, and I'm not against smoking at all. I actually find the scent of tobacco smoke pleasant because I associate it with a lot of different people I've known.

Damn I totally forgot about chew and dip when i made the poll. I would say that someone who chews or dips is definately a tobacco user, but I cant seem to edit the poll. Sit already added occasional smoker. Can only mods edit polls? If so would one please add Smokeless tobacco user to the list, I would greatly appreciate it. Or tell me how to edit it myself thanks.

I've never really found any pleasure in smoking cigarettes. I've occassionally smoked some socially, but only found the smell/taste to be unpleasant.

Not to mention it's one habit I'd rather not have.

I really enjoy to smoke, but I restrain myself due to it's bad effects. I can smoke 10cigarettes in one day, then not smoke for 2weeks. It really depends how I feel, but I am an occasional smoker and I won't deny that.

When swim was under 18, swim smoked anywhere from 1-2 packs a day. It went well with most other things, but eventually swim recognized that he was addicted. Before turning 18, swim quit smoking because it would only get more difficult to quit at that rate. An occasional cigar is a welcomed compliment now though.

I didnt start smoking until i was 18, it started as just one cigarette after smoking weed but soon became a full blown smoker. As for now i have cut back a bit and smoke a pack maybe once every 3-4 days. I also bum alot out to my friends but they also bum them to me so around 5 a day. Tried to quit many times but it never stuck.

The poll allows for multiple answers. I just wanted to get a general idea of who did what. And I tried smoking when i was 14 and got sick. Tried it again when i was 20 and half-cut and never stopped since. One of the few to start after their teens.

Gave up cigs in Jan of 05, but Swim smokes plenty of kind herb....

quote:
I'm Bill Hicks and I'm dead now because I smoked cigarettes. Cigarettes didn't kill me, a bunch of non-smokers kicked the shit out of me one day. I tried to run, they had more energy than I. I tried to hide, they heard me wheezing. Many of them smelled me. (Sniffing sounds) "There he is, get him!" (Pants) "Oh, he's hardly fucking moving, this is pathetic!" (Pants) "Look, he's still trying to get away, he's like a roach, step on him!" (Pants) "Squash him!" "Let's kill him and pee on him. Yeah!"
