cocaine possesion

SWIM was caught with less than half a gram of cocaine in florida a couple months ago. This is SWIMS first time being arrested. THe case has been sent to drug court. Does anyone know more about the specifics of drug court, length of time , and if it can be transfered to different countys and states. SWIM payed a lot of money for a lawyer who says he can't fight the charges since the case was sent to drug court and if SWIM rejects drug court right now then SWIM can't get into the program again. Is this true? Drug court would be a decent option but getting a lawyer definitely seems like a complete waste since he had nothing to do with the case being sent to drug court. Drug court is usually a close to guaranteed option from what i hear if it is a first time offense and if your crime involves purchasing or possesing a drug, but not dealing. IF anyone knows about this offense or has been in a similar situation your advice would be helpful. THanks

SWIM knows of somebody that has been in your almost exact same position before. Drug court really is a great program and there was no reason to pay for a lawyer because a public defender could have gave you the same option. It's very lengthy (took swim's friend over a year), but in the end all charges were dismissed (best thing that could have happened for swim's friend's position). If you stay on the right track and be good you could get out in 9 months if it's relatively the same program where swims from. On average it takes about a year to get out. SWIM's friend got caught with cocaine in his UA once which set him back. Then SWIM's friend got a DUI and another possession charge and they INCLUDED THOSE TWO ADDITIONAL CHARGES in drug court. When swim's friend graduated from the program ALL THREE CHARGES WERE DISMISSED!!!!!!!!! Killed 3 birds with one stone but it took mounds of UA's, fooling outpatient counselors, and making a long commute every 4 times a month (stage one), 2 times a month (stage two), and once a month (stage three) to the juvenile courts. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.
