DMT is an indole hallucinogen, sharing a chemical structure with LSD and other hallucinogens. DMT is found naturally in the blood, brain, and cerebrospinal fluid, where it's function is not exactly known. When DMT (or it's variants) are taken, they bind not only to the brain's DMT receptors, but also to the acetylcholine and serotonin. It is likely that these additional bindings produce the diverse psychological effects.
DMT is easily broken down and does not survive in the stomach acids if it is ingested. When DMT is injected, effects begin in 2 to 5 minutes and last for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then are also resolved within 10 to 15 minutes. When smoked, the effects occur within seconds, producing intense, very visual and auditory hallucinations. There may also be extreme shifts in mood and a sense of bodily dissociation. The peak lasts for 3 to 10 minutes and resolves quickly.
Synthesized 5-methoxy-DMT is about five times stronger than DMT when smoked and very short acting. The user experiences a "rush" similar to that from amyl nitrate. There is little in the way of visuals, just intense thoughts and bodily sensations that last for 5 to 10 minutes.
DMT is not a psychoactive when taken orally because the monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes of the body destory it. Some South American plants contain harmala alkaloids, which inhibit MAO. When MAO is inhibited, DMT taken orally becomes a very potent hallucinogen. Ayahuasca is a combination of such plant materials, found in many preparations in South America.
DMT hallucinations typically are described as a visual pattern of overlapping small rhomboid elements in vivid hues of red, yellow, green, and blue, sometimes referred to as the 'chrysanthemum pattern'. The overall experience is much more intense than that of most other hallucinogens. Even vetern drug users such as Allen Ginsburg and Richard Alpert found DMT to be too powerful and uncontollable for their enjoyment. Many users would later say that they had the most terrifying three minutes of their life. Some reported a feeling that they were melting or fusing into the floor, that their heart was stopping, or that their life-force was ebbing away.
In it's pure form, DMT is sold as a white powder that smells like mothballs. If it has not been completely purified, it may have a tan or brownish color, or an orange, waxy apperance. When smoked in pipes or mixed with marijuana, it is usually enough to produce a 5 to 10 minute intense experience.
The usual dose is 20 to 50mg's, injected or smoked, although as little as 5mg's will have a significant effect. A dose of 75mg's or more will result in a loss of consciousness.
