how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

3 weeks is the answer.

My cat is sure there's still shit for months to come. but it's definitely getting so much better. After 20 days.

That's a long time. Far far longer than anybody ever tells you. Far longer than gear obviously. But that's just the way of it.

Some other cat on this site posted that the first three weeks are the worse. That scared the shit out of this cat, two weeks ago. But that cat was right.

My cat is still worried about the rest of the shit to come. But not that scared. Cos after those first three weeks, what can scare you anymore?

My cat has to say that this site has been absolutely brilliant in keeping him going. And that's why my cat is posting this thread to give an answer about "how long." because that's all any cat wants to know. Especially when they haven't slept for 11 days.

Don't sleep on methamphetamine, fine. Bit rough at times, I expect. But's it not the same. Not desperate for sleep for 10-15 days on the trot; not completely deprived of endorphins. Which is what happens. To every cat who takes this shit on.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

cold turkey? how much were you using? my cat was able to taper off with minor withdrawls over a month on 40mg/day. The people my cat has seen in a rehab setting took 8-10 days. Have heard of people taking much longer in other posts in this forum and find it hard to believe after experiencing the real thing. Know that cold turkey is bitch but this stays in your system so long (it can even be stored in the bone marrow) it takes longer than most opiates. People seen in rehab setting were taking ridiculous amounts 130+mg/day and they usually discharged withdrawal free by day 10. Some earlier. The worst symptoms were usually days 3-6. If you can taper do it that way. Good luck

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

From one cat to another, I just want to say congrats and well done getting off the methadone. It's a huge step and you really should feel proud of yourself.

What you have posted seems pretty much in line with what I've heard - the half-life of methadone is frighteningly long, as you have experienced firsthand How are you doing now?
Sleep patterns are supposed to be the last thing to sort itself out, and once you start getting some regular hours of sleep in, it means things are definitely on the way up.
Just remember it won't be long now, and it won't last forever..the worst is truly over and the exciting/challenging part begins, the staying clean bit.

Best of luck, and keep us posted if you'd like to..journalling is a great way of keeping thoughts clear and are always good for reminding you of how far you've come!

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

My cat has to say thanks ever so much for both of your comments, jplaw and catseye. My cat has done cold turkey from 1ml, probably even less; what he suspects actually is that if he'd done it from 30ml it might have been more severe for the first few days, but then after the same. And what are the first few days? Nothing compared to what's to come. So no real difference.

Thanks for your support genuinely, and your intelligence/knowledge

It's all different isn't it? Can't imagine how you come off 40ml and feel ok after 10 days. But brilliant if you can.

Many best regards

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

My cat has to report that he feels a bit of a twat for saying so confidently "it only lasts three weeks." That's because it actually suddenly got worse on about day 28-30 for another week. So that serves my cat right for being so presumptuous! Still trucking though.

Regards, from one cat to another, and all others.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

My neutered cat with it's rabies vacination and micro chip will inform that it is true that the most severe withdrawal symptoms associated with methadone withdrawal seem to be around the 30 day area but bouts with continued withdrawal symptoms can last much longer. This being said the intitial withdrawal phase for a recovering individual dependent upon methadone is only the first of many steps to remaining methadone free for any extended period of time. For this methadone dependent individual the odds of being successful at changing the repetitive behavior associated with this particular flavor of opiate dependency are 1 in 100. These are the statistics published by the establishement concerning their "liquid handcuffs". Obviously they are especially proud of their drug that caused the user to become dependent for life and are very optimistic that with the citizenry's blessings that they will be able to fleece these drug dependent individuals by first having them pay the rest of their lifes for the drug and secondly due to the long term debilitating effects of this drug the establishment will not have to be concerned about paying out social security benifits to these individuals due to the fact that they will not live past 65. As with any drug, methadone has it's place however the new trend of attempting to cause young otherwise healthy citizens to become lifetime cash cows for the establishement seems to this cat with rabies vacination and micro chip to be in the least conspiratorial in nature.

Post Quality Evaluations:
You are quoting a figure of 1 in 100. You need to back up this kind of claim with a source or sources. It doesn't seem right to me, although it is hard to come off!

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

As someone mentioned further down in the thread it depends to a large extent on the rate you come off, i.e., how fast you decrease your dose, as well as whether or not you are using at the same time but lets assume a rational taper of 5-10% of total dose every week and 1-2 mg/week starting at 15-20. You will experience mild withdrawal most of the way with afternoon/evening hot flashes and craving but really nothing too intolerable if you're committed. Then when you hit 30 until you jump off, whichI did at 12, symptoms are moderate. After the last dose, the real fun begins at 48-72 hours, peaks at 6 days and subsides after 10-14 days. I always was fortunate enough to do this in residential treatment which undoubtedly makes things a bit easier as it takes away that thought that you can run out and fix things. At any rate, I was off all meds (clonidine, propoxyphene, Librium) at day 42. That was from a start of 60. The supporting meds helped a great deal and without them things would have been more difficult. I was starting to sleep about 3 weeks after the last dose. As everyone will tell you, withdrawal is highly individual, dependent on environment, prior drug history, dose, duration, psychological state and more. Most pharmacology texts will describe the basic withdrawal syndrome the same after the last dose and my many runs at this support it (in my experience). Having shared my highly individual experiences, I can also say that withdrawing from the methadone has never been the hardest part (for me). The staying off has been the hardest part for no matter how the withdrawal has gone for me, I have always reached a comfortable state within 30-60 days after the last dose;however, very little provided much in the way of pleasure for me. I was lifting weights, running and doing yoga to try and restore some modicum of endorphin function but it was a tough go. So much so that the longest I've ever stayed off has been 13 months. I started the maintenance game back in 1993 and have been off 4 times for 6, 8, 11 and 13 month stretches. I am currently back on maintenance and getting ready to start a yearlong graduate re-training program in another area in healthcare. I was a pharmacist for many years and was lucky to survive that occupation looking back. So I realize this answer went far beyond the basic question you asked but touches on the complexity of an opioid addiction "cure", of which withdrawal is the very important, and difficult, beginning. Hope this helped somehow.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

Tiger1, super informative and honest post. This neutered cat with rabies shot and micro chip would like to add their individual experience with methadone recovery beyond the 13 month period that you indicated that you were able to arrive at within your recovery time period. This cat can inform that even the long lasting lack of motivation seems to be waining at around the 12 month period. The individual attempting recovery from methadone dependency can only attempt to evolve and adapt in this new opiate free state of consciousness. Armed with the insight of this new drug free state of mind one can only hope that they will be able to use reason to direct their behavior in positive and benficial directions and to recognize the illusions of the self-destructive repetitive behavior associated with opiate dependency. It is this cats point of view that it is the conscious mind that deceived the subconscious and caused it to become influenced by opiates in the first place. The subconscious mind truly believes that it's very existence is dependent upon it maintaining the opiate dependent state. It will resort to any mode of stimulus to influence the conscious mind to maintain it's drug dependent state. It will even distort time itself in it's quest to satiate is dependency. So it is not suprizing that so many well intentioned recovering individuals fall victim to the the seeming incessant illusions associated with the subconscious mind. In the end it is this cat's opinion that when all is said and done one will reap what they sow.

I am not seeing a connection between the micro chip and methadone, but there is a lot of connection made with the poster above me.........can I see a picture of this micro chip please? Surely that is not "against what is allowed" right?

tiger1, so nice to hear from somebody with the pharmaceutical knowledge to say it straight, personal but, critically, knowing what they're talking about. Thanks very much for your post. All the best. Especially instructive is your focus on (focused) endorphin stimulation. Got to be done, hasn't it? Somehow. All the best to all.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

cat, how are you feeling? I think Tiger hits it on the head when he says

Endorphin Deficiency Syndrome is a non-medical term that is often discussed in opiate/oid users (and has been studied in alcoholics). Re-regulating the endogenous endorphin system is long, hard work especially as it can be confused with or mistaken for long standing/untreated depression.
It is very important to have a plan in place/things to occupy your time with that will help give your day some focus...as Tiger suggests, things like exercise and yoga are helpful, however I've read that most exercise increases endorphin blood levels which do not actually cross the blood-brain barrier to effect mood. Supposedly intense cardiovascular/weigh-bearing/stretching workouts lasting at least 30-45 minutes such as long-distance running are more likely to increase endorphin levels in the brain vs. blood (as they are needed by the brain to "push through" and overcome longer episodes of fatigue and discomfort). Diet is also important, and pretty much any hobby that is pleasurable helps, along with socialising and laughter Just remember: it gets better, hang in there!

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

teeshine, why would you wait further? There's going to be withdrawal regardless, and the longer you're on kratom the stronger the withdrawals will be from that.

You can't expect to dance without paying the piper, after all.

You can lower your dose as much as possible, you can do lots of things to make it not as bad, but in the end, you're still gonna have to learn to deal with yourself as yourself, without any crutch (even kratom).

If you're in the right mindset, to be done with this fucking bullshit, start your kratom taper & be done with it. Staying on kratom for 'methadone withdrawals' for a year to try to avoid PAWS or whatever doesn't work. 5mg 4 months ago is WELL out of your system by now (& then some!). Stay on kratom if you want to stay on kratom, but don't try to play yourself & say it's to mitigate methadone withdrawals, cuz those are looooong gone now. Some things you just HAVE to face & can't medicate away.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

Hi Kailey
The only reason I'm waiting so long is I tried quiting 'dones before and almost died. I WILL NOT chance that again. I can handle Loracet wd's (4-5 days) and Roxy 3 days but 2 months of worst feeling I've ever had....oh no I'm definitely not ready. I tappered down from 80 mg a day to 5 in 2 months time and now only taking plain leaf kratom (7-8 gr) 2-3 times a day. When my taper gets to 1/2 teaspoon I'm stopping. Kratom wds are no cake walk but if you've ever quit 'dones cold you know what I mean. I know I can handle that.
I've read 'dones can take up to 6-7 months to be completely out of your body. I started actually thinking better, food tasted great, and libido went through the fucking roof after 2 month mark of no dones. I still can't get enough but has subsided a little.
I'm giving it 2 more months regardless. I know what I've been thru. The piper's been paid tenfold. Endorphine deficiency is what I'm worried abou at this point, not wd's.

Thanks for ur concern kailey

Peace

TeeShine added 23 Minutes and 33 Seconds later...

Kailey I should have been a little clearer about endorphine deficiency, that's the only reason for taking kratom so long. I was ready to stop until I read the above posts.
I'm an opiate junkie since high school and tried everything. Afoaf even grew opium poppies that I may or may not have tried. Valerian and calamus do help at times of no opiates. Found kratom 1 1/2 yrs ago and stopped those but when I stop kratom I will most likely use those again. They work. I used methadone for 3 yrs so I'm just playing it safe....definitely quitting tho

Peace

everyone is different. that has to be remembered cuz i have heard such a wide range of answers myself but for me; i was abruptly taken off of 150 mgs in jail with no help. 2 different times. the second time was several months and i suffered greatly for all of them. the very worst of the symptoms lasted a straight 2 months, only getting minutes of sleep at a tme, it was terrible. i had been on it for years though and it was very much a part of my bodies chemistry. i tried to commit suicide twice. enough said?

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

I think it's different for everyone, but generally if you take it super slow and steady, and don't use on top, things should be easier.

What dose were you on when you quit? Was it 1-2mg, or a higher dose? How quickly did you get down to that dose? Were you feeling fully stable on that dose? These are all factors which massively effect how you feel.

I'm doing a methadone reduction myself, (hopefully the last one), and this time I've taken it really slowly, in the hope that that would make things easier, and also because I realised the important thing is not how quickly I get down to 0mls, but rather, how long it's been since I last used heroin.

As such I'm now on 12mls/daily, having started reducing from 60mls/daily about 8 months ago, (having reached that dose pretty rapidly from about 100mls/daily). So far it's been so, so much easier than previous, faster, attempts. And subsequently, I've got 9 months between me and heroin - something I would never have managed with a quicker reduction. And in that time, the cravings have totally faded, and gear rarely crosses my mind. I've got that distance now, I've had time to see how much I've missed out on, and to realise, now the cravings have faded, that what I want out of life is not what I can get on heroin.

lol, that's my personal situation of course, but really, need to know the answers to those questions before I reckon I can give a prognosis lol.

Good luck, and congrats!

EDIT: Ok, read you dropped off from about 1ml/day, right? So that's about as low as you can get for a drop off, which is good. The question now is how quickly did you get down to 1ml? Were you in a situation where you were stable on 1ml/day and all was good, or were you feeling ill then?

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

My experience was as goes. 9 days ago i decided to go cold turkey from 42.5mg of methadone. I should have got more advice. On day seven after using various low great easy to obtain meds ie paracetamol with codeine and baclofen i walked into my treatment my treatment provider for help. My symptoms in my body were similar to chrnic flu and i needed help and i was under the impression i was just about through everything. Now i have been prescribed 12 miligram of suboxone amd am doing well bodily. The reason i write is for people who dont have a month or two to lay around. I simply have so muxh to xatchup with. Like a lot and i am getting up in bed to write things that require my attention. I cannot spend one more day down and out of action. With so much filling up a usually lazy thought space i am getting hins of anxiety trying to remember everything Needed i.e. Bills appointments etc that i question just sometimes if i am upto it preparing myself for the inevitable mess ups and mistakes but if im to tke the advices ive heard in the past i will just have to get up and keep going but i am on it. For my life and that of my children. Thanks to all previous posters for helpful stuff. Definately ginseng diet and exercise. Time and patience is needd and usefull advice is always needed. Especially from your doctor or treatment provider. Serious detoxers suboxone... In depth communication and a calendar based plan will not only get the job done but will allow you full function during separation. Its a big task and support of every kind you can get is good. Also phone your friends and tell them you are a drugfree house so they know. Keep them friends but with that boundary that way the evil shit is not being put in front of you. Thats a big no no.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

Just remember we are talking withdraw here correct? I actually don't know where to draw a line between withdraw and side effects though? I myself felt bad for a year after stopping 110mg after 5 months. It could have went longer but I started doing fentanyl and oxycodone at the end of that year. I have also talked with a few others that were on more than that for longer and felt withdraw/side effects for 2 years.

I just glided through responses up here but am sure we'll here bad ones if they feel like posting. I swore I'd never go back, but here I am again, but it's better than suffering and I plan on going to Suboxone one of these days, but I want to do the Suboxone perfect if possible.

Good luck on your goal and I wish you well, I really do.

I posted a question regarding methadone to fentanyl but I must have posted it in the wrong forum, should've read this forum first, but, I have a question regarding the methadone build up in a persons system that I'm hoping you can help with. I've read that the methadone stores in the body fat and over the 3 pain receptors in a persons brain; if a woman aprox. 43 years old has been taking methadone daily for pain management at 60- 80 mg per day for about 15 years and the woman's weight (bmi) has fluctuated dramatically during these years but she still is aprox 30 pounds overweight, does this factor in to the time it takes to get the methadone out of her system. (More fat = longer time to clear the drug). Also, doc switched to 100mcg fentanyl, it's been almost 3 months and only until the last week the patient has finally started to feel quality of life improve, will it continue to get better from here or should patient settle for it is as good as it's going to get. Last dose of methadone was 20 mg a week and and half ago in an attempt to get through the terrible pain and, metal withdrawl the patient was feeling, she was then given a tox screen a week later, hoping methadone would not be present but so many different opinions on this possibility. I apologize if I'm rambling and hope the questions are clear, at times when lupus is at it's worse the patient has a hard time with brain fog.

Re: how long does the worst of methadone withdrawal last?

I was on 30 mg per day (10mg tablet 3x a day) of methadone for pain control from 2006 to 2012. When I got off, I know we tapered way too fast, and I jumped off when I got to just 5mg a day. OMG… worst experience ever. Sick as hell physically for 2 weeks. Screwy in the head for another 2-3 weeks after that… I even had to go to a shrink. It's like making a deal with the devil… you feel great on it physically but as soon as you want to stop you go through soul-sucking hell. Ugh. Glad that's over… although I am heading BACK to pain management at the end of this month and I REALLY hope they don't put me on methadone again.
