Police have made one of their largest ever seizures of the popular party drug ketamine as part of a continuing campaign to crack a syndicate using Hong Kong as transit for drugs shipped to the mainland.Authorities announced Wednesday that 200 kilograms of ketamine, or "Special K" as it is known, was seized at a Cheung Sha Wan apartment on Castle Peak Road Tuesday by the Narcotics Bureau.
The haul has an estimated retail value of HK$60 million.
A 47-year-old man surnamed Leung, suspected of being a key syndicate member, was also arrested.
Acting Chief Superintendent John Ribeiro said Wednesday the seizure was the largest since the drug first appeared locally in 1998.
Tuesday's raid comes only a month after another record haul of ketamine, when police found 151kg in Ho Tung New Village, Sai Kung.
"This is a successful intelligence- led operation which we believe has neutralized a ketamine trafficking syndicate in Hong Kong," a police spokesman said.
Ribeiro said the drug probably originated from elsewhere in Asia and was bound for the mainland.
