Kratom on plane

Any ideas on taking kratom on a plane. It is legal, so there should be no problems.

However, it does look pretty suspicious. I would like to take some as carry-on, and then put a larger amount in my checked baggage.

Any suggestions.

thanks

Re: Kratom on plane

Keep the label with it if there is one. If they ask you what it is, tell them that it's kratom - a completely legal botanical product and you would appreciate it if they put it back into your luggage so you can be on your way.
You aren't breaking any laws, so humor them as much as you care to and no more.
Have a safe flight.

That's precisely what my buddy Eddie does - no problems as of yet.

Re: Kratom on plane

While it might be 100% legal, it might still come with problems.

Telling them what it is (powder in a bag) is one thing, proving it is what you say it is is another.
At the worst you could be detained while they test it, after all if it was as easy as telling customs officers or other officials that the bag of powder you have in your luggage is legal and them taking your word for it then drug smuggling would be a pretty lucrative and easy job. I'm
m unsure how long a drug test at an airport could take, but i would not want to risk a delay that might risk me missing a flight.

Also, make sure that it is legal where ever you are going to. Kratom is not legal everywhere.

An remember most field drug tests are highly flawed and false positives come up all the time. Is it really worth the risk?

Re: Kratom on plane

Just a thought on this subject. Would it be better to have the Kratom in capsules with a proper label on the bottle or does it really matter? Having it in capsules and advising that it is a herbal remedy for pain seems like a better way to transport if one had to.

I'm not aware of a single country that has sold Kratom as a remedy for pain with scientific/clinical approval, so to do so would arouse even more suspicion should it be checked.

You can bring any drug through an airport that you like, legal or otherwise and you can stick a label on the bag/bottle stating what it is (or pretending its something else) but there is always a chance that if it is something that is not common or looks dodgy then it might have to be tested before the all clear is given.

I would suggest that sticking a false label on it would be a very bad idea.
While Kratom is good for pain it is not sold as a pain remedy and in a lot of places it has to be sold specifically marked as 'not for human consumption' to get around certain laws.

^ Agreed, just thought it would be less suspicious if they were in capsules versus a bag of powder, crushed leaves, or whatever.

Re: Kratom on plane

I just want to add that I agree with Ian, Potter and the others that bringing it with you could certainly cause problems. I hadn't considered the false-positive scenario. My thinking was that they might test it and when they don't get positive results for anything illegal, they would take your word for it and send you on your way.
You don't have to worry much about being arrested, but those people can be a real pain in the ass and make your trip much less pleasant if they wanted to make a big deal out of it. You just never know.
Maybe you could send a supply ahead and retrieve it when you get there?

Re: Kratom on plane

As others have suggested, some bum I met on the street would suggest putting the kratom in capsules and then put them in some unmarked bottle. In the highly unlikely event that these capsules were searched and some bum you met on the street were asked what they were, that bum could simply say that he made his own herbal capsules, and he should tell them exactly what was in the capsules.

The stuff smells like new-mown grass, and no drug dog in the world (except maybe in SE Asia) will start barking if he smells it, so my bum doesn't think that your bum has anything to worry about.

A bit of advice though...when dealing with any LEO...tell your bum NEVER to offer any information, but never ever EVER lie.

Re: Kratom on plane

It IS legal so the only thing you want to avoid is to waste time.

I would put it in a simple tin box, slap a label on it with something like:

Great Indian Chief
Traditional Native American Pain Medicine
Mitragyna Speciosa (Kratom)

If they ask, tell them it is natural medicine you bought from some Native American shop. It is totally plausible, and they will just assume you are an idiot who believes in alternative therapy, and paid a bunch of money for some sand in a tin box. There are tons of those.

The security personnel just wants to do their job. Be honest and respectful. Do not waste time trying to explain that it is a drug, but that it is legal. Working in airport security is hectic. Remember that there are people in line behind you.

Re: Kratom on plane

A friend of myself took kratom on a plane to NYC from GA (and back) with no problems. He just kept it in its original sealed/ziplock package the entire time. As long as kratom is legal in destinations A and B, legally there is nothing to worry about. But, as was stated above, put it in a non-suspicious bag/package that isn't see-through. This will avoid wasting time and possible embarassment. (smuggling would only be relavent if it were illegal)

Sorry but as all medicine must me FDA approved this idea is a non runner. There are reasons why Kratom is sold in some country's (the ops included) as 'Not for human consumption' and that is because they can not get a licence needed to sell it as a food or a medicine. Im sure this was alread discussed in this thread?
Pretending it is a medicine (even traditional medicined need FDA approval) is likely to get you in just as much trouble, at the very least delays.

What did customs say to your friend when they stopped them and found the kratom? This is the answer we are really looking for in this thread, it would clear up a lot of questions.
If you friend was not searched then its not realy relevant to the worries of the OP.
Can you confirm that they recognised it as Kratom and they knew what it was and did not waste any times doing tests?
Thanks

Post Quality Evaluations:
A most excellent and pertinent counterpoint to those who think they can just shout "it is legal" to customs officers and be on their merry way.
Quality post from Ian as always. Until SWIM hears multiple anecdotes of customs officials not batting an eye lid after discovering a bag of leaf/powder with the words 'Thai', 'Bali' or 'Indo' on it, SWIM will not be taking kratom on a plane.

Re: Kratom on plane

He had a large batch in his luggage and small quantity in his carry on (a backpack). They didn't search his backpack, just sent it through the xray machine like everyone else. They did search his luggage (left a Homeland Security ticket saying customs searched it), but not his backpack. Nothing happened. (Note: the kratom in his luggage hadn't been opened yet so it was still vaccum sealed and had a label/logo on it. The carry on kratom had been opened, but as was already said, they didn't physically check it.

Re: Kratom on plane

SWIM has flown with Kratom multiple times in checked and carry on luggage. They once had their checked luggage searched with the kratom in the original packaging from the supplier (luggage had a tag on it saying it had been opened and searched) and there were no problems at all. They said they said they wouldnt hesitate to fly with kratom again, but would recommend having it in the original packaging clearly marked.

SWIMS dog rex has traveled with Kratom on two occasions. he typically . . .[Mod edit] [does something to present the Kratom as being something else]

Rex was always nervous to travel with bagged kratom because most of the labels say "not for human consumption," not to mention the TSA are trigger happy at most major airports. They take pleasure in making people late, and would love nothing more than to flex some power and ruin a persons trip.

Post Quality Evaluations:
And this is exactly what was warned about earlier in the thread - Intentional misrepresentation of a substance.

Re: Kratom on plane

That bum I met on the street had neglected to remember that FDA approvals are required for substances for internal consumption. He repeals his original admonition to cap the kratom and put it in an unmarked container, and recommends the advice of other bums to keep the kratom in its original sealed packaging, especially if it is labeled "not for human consumption" with the contents clearly marked.

Re: Kratom on plane

SWIM visited Ireland for the first time recently, and after some deliberation decided against taking kratom. Regardless of its legal status, SWIM simply did not want to be travelling through customs with a bag of a powdered substance. In short, SWIM simply did not want to 'have the conversation' with the authorities should his bag have been randomly searched.
However, if SWIY does decide to take kratom in a bag on a plane, SWIM would recommend against attempting to hide it away at the bottom of his luggage, and have it at at the very top of the bag, giving the impression he is not trying to hide anything.

To clarify SWIMs main point again though, he would not recommend taking kratom on a plane.

Re: Kratom on plane

My friend travels a lot (domestically in the US only though) and has never had any problems carrying kratom on the plane. She keeps it in powder form with the bag marked clearly with what it is (the original label). She tends to break it down into smaller bags, carrying two in different carry on bags (one in her purse, the other in a backpack) and also carries a larger bag of kratom in her bag that goes under the plane, just in case she encounters any problems with her carry-on supply (which she never has). She's had her bags searched (including checked luggage), been patted down, and everything, and not once has she had a problem or question arise.

She seconds bosshallucy's note to keep it in it's original package. If one is particularly concerned, they might want to get to the airport and go through security with lots of extra time just in case there are any problems, so one doesn't miss their flight. Always treat them with respect if you encounter any problems and don't get upset. They would just be doing their job, and pissing them off won't do anything but prolong whatever happens (or worse).

My friend has already planned out that if she were ever asked what it was, she would flat out tell them. It's not illegal (where she travels anyway), and there is absolutely no reason to lie, and every reason to tell the truth. There is nothing wrong with carrying a legal, non-prescription herbal remedy with you. It's no different than carrying a vitamin or bag of echinacea tea or something.

Also, as ianzombie said, be sure it's legal where you are going! The last thing SWIY wants to do is get caught by TSA carrying a harmless (as far as SWIM can see, although she is no doctor) herb that's legal in most places.
