Uncle R's Kratom Tea Recipe

My great-uncle Romulus Radiometer passed down this kratom tea recipe, which he said produces excellent results:

Quote:
Some people eat their kratom but being an old-timer I like the ritual of extracting it into tea. I've been doing it twice daily for a long time now and I'd like to share my method.

If one has leaf, either crushed or whole, the extraction will benefit from grinding the leaf a bit in a coffee grinder or mini food-processor. The more surface area, the more alkaloids will theoretically be extracted (though I'll say that with little tolerance, coursely ground leaf provides plenty of effect). I don't sweat trying to get it as fine as the powders that are sold, it seems to be equi-potent... ymmv as always. Powders need no preparation. Don't ask me about those new-fangled "extracts" or "resins", because I don't know!

Using a small saucepan (mine is 8" x 2") over medium heat, bring just a touch over 1 cup (a full coffee cup) of water and one dose (10g or less) of kratom to a very light boil - just over a simmer. Boil for 15 minutes.

In my house, this leaves 1/2 cup of liquid. If using more kratom, or making it for two or more, my rule of thumb, for the saucepan I use, is to start with 1/2 cup water over the desired total - for two doses, shooting for 1/2 cup each, I'd use 1.5 cups of water, and for a hefty dose I'd add a bit also to prevent it from boiling down too far. I add just a touch more liquid when using self-ground leaf than with powder. Doubtless you may have slightly different results or preferences than I, and may need to add or subtract water to suit your conditions. If in doubt, use too much water, as you can always boil it off at the end at a loss of only time!

Decant the pan at 45 degrees for 15 seconds or so - this will gather the material in a clump which makes pouring easier. Then pour it slowly through either a metal coffee filter (for powder) or a wire strainer (for ground leaf), using a spoon to block the solids from the drippings, and then also to squeeze most of the liquids from the kratom. It's not essential to squeeze it all out the first time, as you'll be doing one more extraction.

Put another 1 cup of water and (after squeezing) any leftovers in your strainer into the pan, and put it back on the burner. While waiting for this to boil again, it's time to enjoy the first extract! Add 2 tsp of the sweetener(s) of your choice, and 1 tsp lemon juice (just my suggestion of course) and drink down.

Boil the kratom for 15 minutes again as before, except for making a better effort to get every last drop of the liquid out of the kratom. This extraction will taste much better and have far less actives. I tried doing a 3rd extraction once, for the hell of it, and my beautiful assistant, who was familiar with kratom but who had no tolerance, stated that it had a very slight effect, take that for what it's worth.

Obviously this isn't the only way to take kratom, but it's worked for me for a long time, and I thought that some other people might find it useful also.

Uncle R thanks you for his attention, they don't get around too much in his old folks' home!

Ahh, thats where I went wrong! I used 1/2 cup per 10g, and boiled, that is why it was so unbearable, not diluted enough!

I ended up using Arizona Ice Tea and Karo syrup as a dilution/sweetner. Was almost tasteless.

Excellent writeup! Thanks!!

yea so swim just did this method and swims coffie grinder got swims bali leaves preaty fine, swim smimmered on #3 for 15 min using electric stove , swimm tried using his tea filter, but the grains got through, swim then used a wire strainer, which still did not filter properly, swwim made a wonderful mess to clean up, hmmm swim wonders what would work, perhaps a cloth t-shirt like swim uses for his kava.... the bali with some honey is preaty good, not as bad a swim thought the tea would taste

Ed uses a standard gold coffee filter for finer powders.

Re: Uncle R's Kratom Tea Recipe

This reminds swim of a friend's method of using a stove top espresso maker. He adds the kratom and water and makes the tea using this method for his morning wake-up and then in the afternoon adds more water and has an afternoon tea this time adding some lemon juice to extract the last bit of alkaloids from the leaves.

Re: Uncle R's Kratom Tea Recipe

SWIM prefers ingesting the leaf material along with the liquid. SWIM takes one part leaf ground fine with one part hot chocolate mix, combines the two in a mug, adds 1-1&1/2 cups boiling water, stir with spoon and let steep for 15 minutes. After this more cold water can be added if needed, one more quick stir and the whole mess is swallowed in one gulp. SWIM finds that the taste of kratom tea or leaves for SWIM is an effective emetic but they are quite tolerable when ingested this way. SWIM also gets a better effect with the whole leaf than the tea. The benefit of ingesting this way versus capping is that they kick in about 30 min faster and overall are more potent. A small fraction of the effect is lost when SWIM caps kratom, though sometimes this is the only convenient way to take it. SWIM usually makes the above with about 10-15 grams of leaf but it can be scaled to any volume.

A new way to ingest kratom for those swimmers who don't like the bitterness. Thanks.

Re: Uncle R's Kratom Tea Recipe

Is there any reason for not adding the lemon juice first?

We might not know if lemon juice (low pH) helps extract kratom alkaloids, but in case it does, wouldn't it make more sense to include it straight away?

The two seperate 15 minute boils in 12 Ozs 25% Lemon Juice and 75%
water will just about get out all of the good alkaloids. This should produce one large full cup. Swim mixes 1/2 cup with 1/2 cup of OJ and 5 teaspoons of sugar.

This is done with both cups and will pretty much mask
the bitter taste. Swim does not eat the kratom as all that vegatable matter is very hard on swims stomach, takes twice as long to work, and produces a weaker experience than brewing it as tea.

For those who are Serious about learning about Kratom, I suggest that you join the "Kratom Connoisseurs". Where you burn kratom Insense for
its aroma.

The FDA has not approved the consumption of kratom, and right on the package is written Not For Human Consumption! Yes, we all know better, but ya need to play the game if ya want to see it remain legal and for sale! In Swims opinion, kratom is a miraculous plant and we need to protect it from the moron kids who go on You tube like they did with salvia!
