<TD>Man Finds Beached Cocaine, Only Turns In Half, Police Say

June 14, 2004

NEW ORLEANS -- A man who allegedly found cocaine on the beach at Fourchon was arrested Friday after Lafourche Parish sheriff's investigators said he kept part of it and turned the rest over to police.

Dennett "Bear" Rodrigue, 43, of Lafayette, faces possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

While searching the beach for cocaine that has been drifting up, agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force came across a van about 1½ miles from the entrance to the beach. Two men were in the vehicle, and agents said they did not see any type of fishing equipment.

When agents approached the van, they smelled marijuana, police said. Rodrigue and his passenger were asked to exit the vehicle, and Rodrigue allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana. He also told agents there was crack cocaine and a crack pipe in the van.

At the Harbor Police Station at Fourchon, Rodrigue allegedly told agents he had found 3 to 4 kilograms of cocaine on the beach earlier in the week. He turned 2 kilograms over to Harbor Police and kept some for himself, police said.

A search of his camper turned up drugs and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Rodrigue is the second person to be arrested after finding cocaine that washed up on the beach. Paul Collins, 41, of Golden Meadow was arrested earlier on similar charges. Officials are warning residents that there is air, sea and land surveillance along the beaches of south Louisiana, and more arrests will be made.
