Canada: Grocery Stores To Be Barred From Selling Crystal Meth
by Tamakshi Tandon, Reuters, (19 Jan 2006) National Post Canada
TORONTO - Canadian grocery stores will no longer be able to sell many popular cold and allergy remedies because they contain ingredients used to make a popular recreational drug, regulators said.

Pharmacies are exempt from the ban, which takes effect on April 10, although some products will be moved behind the counter, said the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities, which governs the sale of medications.

The ban applies to 17 medications that contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, which are used to make methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth.

"The idea is that if you have fewer locations that are selling them, you have more opportunity for educating store personnel, monitoring sales and monitoring the use of the product," NAPRA executive director Ken Potvin said yesterday.

Canadian police praised the move. "It will impact the availability of precursor chemicals to clandestine labs," said Sergeant Martin Blais of the RCMP. A 2004 RCMP report said the force had busted 40 crystal meth labs in 2004, compared with 14 in 1999.

This has been in the works for a while in Canada, especially in western Canada where meth has become very popular. The one time swim tried meth it was from a friend visiting from out west.
Many govts are now tightening the availability of psuedoephedrine. This has been common knowledge for a while and discussed in other threads, but do the knowledged members here think that if pseudo is totally outlawed one day that it will just lead swims to more dangerous reactions? As far as far as this swim knows I+RP+psuedo is the 'safest'

I knew this had to happen sooner or later, after seeing what was happening in the states. Here you can pretty much walk into any pharmacy and buy as many boxes of pseudo pills as you want. There are lots of them too pseudo only, different brands, different dosages n all that. Stopping the sale in grocery stores alone will probably not even make any difference at all on meth production, though its not extremely common in the first place.

What a retarded headline. I'm reasonably certain it was already illegal for stores to sell meth. :P
