Refined opium ?
How does one make refined opium from raw opium ?
What is the exact traditional procedure (using boiling water I guess) ? Last edited by genaro; 19-01-2006 at 18:25. |

Not boiling water, but a search engine will help.

you need warm water and a bubble bag
![]() if you plan to use boiling water call me, i'd like to be there when the vapor come up! put your raw Opium into a pan with warm water, heat slowly until the Opium is dissolved. At this point you'll have dark brown water. Filter this water trough a bubble bag,and collect the filtered water into another pan. Throw away the vegetable residues you have into the bubble bag and keep the filter water into the pan. Let the water evaporate and finally you'll have purified opium. SWIM tried this only once... it's not worth unless you have a great quantity of opium and you know exactly how to do it. Last edited by MrJim; 20-04-2007 at 21:32. Reason: SI |

well according to merck index:
1) morphine melting point is 197°C so using boiling water (=100°C) shouldn't evaporate any of the morphine from the opium (why would fumes make you stone?) ...and I have a friend who successfully make opium poppy extraction by boiling it in water so I think boiling water shouldn't waste any morphine... 2) 1g "morphine monohydrate" dissolves in 5000mL cold water or 1100mL boiling water (or 210mL alcohol or 98mL boiling alcohol) And raw opium is 8 -15% morphine So if you have the 15% stuff, 6.6666g raw opium could be around 1g morphine. Then (unless morphine is much more soluable in water than morphine monohydrate is) that would mean that to dissolve the morphine from 6.6666g raw opium (without loosing any of it) one would need 1100mL boiling water (that hell of a lot to evaporate !!!) or even 5L cold water !!! Alcohol is probably more suitable (need 210mL alcohol only) Tell me if I'm wrong ? (my statement is based on the consideration that morphine monohydrate soluability is probably close to morphine soluability, but maybe this is untrue) Last edited by genaro; 23-01-2006 at 13:34. |

what you say sounds correct.
anyway the guy asked how to refine raw opium. When you collect latex , if you aren't meticulous or if you are in a hurry because a guardian may shoot at you,you collect a lot of unwanted vegetable matter. This matter gives O. a bitter taste when smoked and makes your opium very unpleasant to smoke. if you compare spanish O. with syrian or indian Opium, you'll notice that the spanish is stronger but it tastes really bad..that's because of the different "milker"skills... DIRTY Punk thieves in spain, experienced opium milker in Syria ... all these dirty wastes could be removed easily with a bubble bag and hot water. |

I've never heard of syrian opium, though i know these two countries quite well, that's why i'm asking. Interesting if lebanese opium is known as syrian opium ( though not entirely absurd
