Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

There are lots of threads dancing around this idea, but with extensive UTFSE, it does not look like this tek is laid out easily.

The mugwump really enjoys his kratom, and he's tried the toss and wash, the tea and capsules. After working with this method, he now won't do it any other way. The other ways are way too nauseating and/or taste terrible.

This is all very basic, and each step of this tek can be found in another post on this forum. At least in principle. Do not be afraid to be resourceful; this tek is designed for the monetarily challenged. If you need to cut up and juice some limes, do that in place of lemon juice. Use an old glass salsa jar for the HDPE. Use your girlfriends hairdryer rather than the oven. Et cetera.

He tried an isopropyl alcohol extraction on plain kratom powder without lemon juice. It took days, several bottles of alcohol and dozens of pulls before he was satisfied all the alkaloids had been successfully extracted. This method, if followed in all the best possible ways, should get nearly all alkaloids in one go, requiring possibly one more pull at the end, or 2-3 for the truly nit-picky.

He apologizes for the lack of pictures. He lost his camera over the holidays, and if its not found, will be a while before its replaced. If anyone wants to try this tek and take pictures, please post them here.

****

You will NEED:
  • Kratom
    Lemon juice
    Isopropyl alcohol or Everclear
    HDPE jars
    Coffee filters
    Drying tray
    Hair dryer/oven

You should have:
  • Coffee grinder
    Blender
    Rubberbands

Step 1: Preparing the kratom

It is best to start with small, singular doses of kratom until there is a comfort level with both the variety of kratom used and the quality of extract that is produced. Kratom is relatively safe, and the mugwump only uses one source, so he can now do this with large quantities of kratom and easily eyeball resin balls for dosing. However, he again pleads that singular, small doses should be used when trying this extraction.

Is it powder or leaf? If it's powder, skip this. It's ready. But the mugwump likes to get 'crushed leaf', because of the idea that pre-processed powder may lose alkaloids from more surface area being exposed to the air. But it probably doesn't make much difference, it's personal preference.

If you have leaf, it should be powderized. That's how the coffee grinder is used. Don't have one? That's ok. If you have a blender, skip to step 2 and throw the leaf in with lemon juice and blend. Its not as effective as the coffee grinder, but better than the third option if you have neither a grinder nor a blender: pouring the kratom leaf in the HDPE jar with lemon juice and shaking vigorously. This will work, but be prepared to repeat the alcohol step ahead.

Step 2: Lemon juice

Once it is powderizied, put the kratom in your blender or HDPE jar. Pour, at the very least, enough lemon juice to cover the kratom. Blend or shake for as long as you want to. The mugwump will sit there with it on the highest setting for several minutes.

The mugwump then pours the sour smoothie onto his drying tray. You could put this in the oven at a lower temperature (200-300 F) and wait for the juice to dry out. But the mugwump likes to use a hair dryer to dry out the kratom, mostly because he can keep an eye on it and shift the tray around when needed.

The lemon juice will take a quite while to dehydrate; its not really feasible to use a fan or air dry.

Step 3: Alcohol

The mugwump only uses isopropyl alcohol. Others may be wary of this, however if evaporated completely it should not pose any health problems. The bittering agent used in isopropyl alcohol is food safe, and was probably even in the lemon juice used. 99% isopropyl alcohol is the best to use, however 91%, 70% or, if nothing else is available, 50% alcohols will still work.

However if it still does not sit well with your labrat, Everclear is a fine substitution. The mugwump pleads that it is still evaporated entirely before consuming.

Once the kratom is dry and sticky from the lemon juice, put it back in the blender or jar. Add enough alcohol to at least cover the kratom. Blend or shake for as long as you want, preferably longer than the lemon juice. This is the part where all the goodies are coming out of the kratom material.

If you let this sit, the plant material will settle to the bottom and the alcohol will rise to the top. Ideally, the liquid will be almost black, with the leaf on the bottom being a much lighter color.

Step 4: Filtering

The mugwump has these plastic and wire-mesh coffee filters that sit comfortably in the rim of his HDPE jars. Most don't have this, so you will need to rubberband and a paper coffee filter, or at worst, a t-shirt, around the rim of the jar. Pour your alcohol/kratom smoothie through the filter.

Now with the darkened alcohol in the jar, pour it out onto your drying tray. Dry it the same way as before with the lemon juice, with a hair dryer. Using an oven would need extreme caution. It would be ok to use a fan or allow it to air dry, but that takes a lot longer.

The kratom material in the filter can be placed back in the blender/jar. Repeat steps 3 and 4. The alcohol filtered this time should be markedly lighter in color. If these steps are repeated a few times, the alcohol should soon be staying a fairly light color. That means all the alkaloids have been taken out.

When you are satisfied enough alkaloids have been extracted, feel free to dispose of the kratom material. The mugwump, however, likes to keep a large tupperware in the freezer of used up kratom material with the purpose of trying another extraction when he has collected a significant amount.

Step 5: Eating

The dried, sticky resin is scraped up and consumed. The resin is crazy sour from the lemon juice, so it doesn't taste very good. Gelcaps are simplistic, and of course far fewer need to be eaten than kratom powder. The mugwump still isn't a big fan of this. What he does is scrape the resin up into wads on the tray and then freezes them.

The frozen kratom wads, which are still fairly squishy even frozen, are scraped up and coated with peanut butter or cake frosting, then swallowed like a pill. The mugwump also uses the method of putting the resin on a spoonful of yogurt/pudding/mashed potatoes and swallowing. Anything that goes down easy can be used.

This has been a very much trial and error learning experience, any ideas on improvements to this method, critiques and other such comments are encouraged, including ways to make this write-up more readable to the average user.

Enjoy, safe travels.

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

I believe it's a good idea to freeze the kratom after the alcohol is added due to the ethanol hardening the plant cell walls. Freezing will coutneract this problem and result in a more potent extract

Can you explain how alcohol 'haredns the plant cell walls'

Can you also explain how to go about freezing 99% isopropyl alcohol, or even strong vodka, Unless you have a refridgerator with some serious cold settings i dont see how its possible.

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

Q: What is the reason behind freezing the kratom in later steps?
A: Alcohol hardens the cell walls even in weaker concentrations such as the 80
proof vodka we use. This lowers the yield as a result. Freezing the kratom
breaks up the crystallized walls and increases the yield from the following
steps.

From a professional guide

Man, I'm too tired to read two huge guides sorry but apparently after removing alcohol from the plant material the plant material should be frozen to thus produce higher yields

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

It would take a very low temperature to freeze alcohol, mosts fridges/freezors wond hve that low a seting.

I have however heard of kratom on its own or kratom in water being frozen before making a tea or extract will help the alkaloids to be extracted.

Although having tried this ive not noticed any difference in the resulting tea or extract. Even if it helps im not sure it does enough for it to be that noticable. Not in any thing ive personally tried.

After removing the kratom from the alcohol the alcohol should contain the alkaloids.
Do you then take the leaf and try to further extract any remaining alkaloids by freezing it instead of binning it?

I think freezing it before the alcohol should have the same effect without any further steps being necessary.

If you think its worth the effort and it has shown a significant result compared to the regular alcohol/water extraction then i would of course love to see a TEK showing the steps and how each step makes a difference. that would be good.

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

Finally I found this thread again. In the guide I was reading they were talking of using two seperate pots and re-using the kratom leafs from the first boil from the first pot then freezing the wet, powdery left overs and using it for a second boil. I dunno, but swim thinks freezing the kratom before the whole extraction may lead to larger yields in the end

bananaboi added 261 Minutes and 0 Seconds later...

I'm thinking just before step 3 the kratom should be frozen

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

If anything it can be frozen before it is mixed with anything, espicially alcohol as this can not be frozen without an industrial freezer.

If you are not sure about the reasons and your only quoting from what one other thread on another site said then to continue is pointless.
Its been mentioned already about freezing the leaves to break down cell structure to make extraction easier, however it has alwdone before using water/alcohol to pull the alkaloids.

This is documented several times.

Maybe you yourself should perform a few different types of extraction using your theorys and post the results.

Here re my results using basic extraction techniques. http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=158056

I have frozen in the past but with no noticable difference.

Re: Simple, cheap Kratom extract recipe

If you use isopropyl alcohol, make sure ALL of it is evaporated out of the extract. Isopropyl is not the best to use because any left over in your product can cause blindness. Use everclear of any other ethanol (95%) brand. My monkey knows this for a fact and is known for doing herbal extractions for companies that distribute throughout the US.

^ I think you are thinking of Methyl Alcohol (Methanol) that causes blindness if consumed. I doubt that consuming minute amounts of Isopropyl Alcohol will pose any serious health risks.

My apologies for letting this question sit around for so long without an answer. To be perfectly honest, there is no real reason! It helps out with the cell wall breakage, but for maximum effect that should be done BEFORE the initial extraction process.

Basically, its just a place to store it and the freezing process MIGHT help in getting the final alkaloids out of the plant material when the process is repeated. A closet, shelf, counter would work just as well.

This is after the alcohol has been drained out so there shouldn't be much worry about freezing that.
