This coming summer a few friends and i are going to take a trip somewhere(for the purposes of sampling substances), we are thinking vancouver or amsterdam. vancouver would be cheaper, we would just drive there from the states. But is it worth it? i hear lots of talk about "Vansterdam" but i dont have a whole lot to go by. i figure there are plenty of people here from both places and id rather have personal thoughts than rumors. So i guess my question is: Is amsterdam worth the extra money or is Vancouver a similar experience? Thanks

Vancouver isn't a similar experience to amsterdam. In Amsterdam weed and hash is sold in shops with menus to pick and choose what type you want. In vancouver there are coffee shops that you can go in and smoke at, but dealing is not permitted in the shops. The people outside are street dealers and if you are looking for quality, I think that street dealers are probably the only people in Van who have less than excellent weed. In fact some of them just shove literal grass into bags to sell. Vancouver does have very liberal laws and there is a plethora of drugs which are easily accessible, but because of it's reputation there are just as many street scammers out there who will rip you off because they know you are going back to your home country and they will never have to see you again. Amsterdam, of course, is the same way with the street people.
Both cities have a lively nightlife, but as far as overall safety Vancouver is probably a little safer in the downtown late at night than A-dam. If you have a friend in Van that would make all the difference in the world to your time there. There are other things around Van such as excellent skiing as well which do make it worthwhile. |

You are right, Amsterdam is going to be a lot more expensive. The Dollar is really weak against the Euro, airfare is expensive, and hotels in Europe aren't exactly cheap.
I don't think you and your friends parents (assuming they are aware of the trip) are going to be thrilled when you tell them that you are going to Amsterdam (or when you ask for permission). Vancouver would be easier to get permission for you and your friends to go to (once again if you still need it). Getting good stuff in Vancouver might be a problem. If your are really friendly and social you can probably get a good connection within 24 hours of arrival. If you know how to tell good stuff from bad stuff you could sort your way through the street dealers until you find one selling good stuff or one who can lead you to go stuff. If a dealer tries to sell you crap and you tell him you don't want it but would be interested in better stuff, he might be able to send you to someone else or sell you better stuff. |

Vancouver would be good and getting quality shouldnt be that big of a problem. SWIM never has a problem with getting pretty dam good shit. There are some lower quality buds out there but if u ask for the good stuff and tell them thats all you want you should get it no problem. There are also some really good headshops that sell mushrooms and stuff, I wont go further for the protection of all the headshops there but there are some really good ones... The experience wouldnt be quite like amsterdam but still a worthwhile experience.

Thanks for all your input i understand a lot better now. Permission is not an issue only money is so even though it wont be quite the same as amsterdam i think ill go to vancouver this time. save amsterdam for a little later.

Please don't go to Amsterdam just to smoke up, johnny. Europe is way more than that, if you go to amsterdam and don't go to a lot of other places (since you're already there) then you would have wasted thousands of dollars. I've never been to Vancouver, I think, but a trip to almost anywhere, as Martha Stweart would say, "it's a good thing"

My advice is -go to the 'dam.
There you can literally get the best green ever, which the dutch have scientifically perfected over the last 20-30 years, due the large 'drug-tourist' trade. Their weed is simply the best out there. You simply go into a coffeeshop, pick up a menu and choose your weed. Some menu's at certain shops literaly have the bags of bud attached to the menu itself. The prices are good, and even if you are a bonafide smoker, you will find yourself not doing a fat lot at all. Because basically you will be too stoned to bother. Which in my opinion is what the dam is all about. Plus, there is plenty of fit laydeez to 'entertain' you if thats your thing (not mine -too faithful for my own good !! ). But they are that fine, it is nearly too hard to resist!! The best thing about the dam is the abilty to skin a spliff and smoke it within 2 feet of the law !! Forget the money -go to amsterdam. (Although i appreciate that it is easy for me to say that as england is only an hour flight away!!) But if you 'smoke' -There is no better place. |

I know what you were referring to. There was talk of proposing legislation to make weed unavailable to non-locals in coffee shops, but it has never got beyond the discussion phase. I think there might be an article or two on it in the drugsnews section or law and order. |

If that is the law I can see it as one that is broken often. Those coffee shop owners make a dam lotta cash through tourists, I doubt many of them would be willing to just stop completely.
Sort of how like it is in Scotland with booze, or at least last time I was there which was quite a while ago. I was 14 at the time and although the drinkin age is 18 I had no problem getting served at all but a few pubs. |
