Side effects - Diphenhydramine = numbed during day

I was taking Diphenhydramine as a sleep aid. But I started noticing I was getting numb from outside stimulation. Such as when someone tells a joke it's hard for me to find it funny so I don't laugh. Plus Sex drive went down too. Just being able to smile was hard. Anyone else experience this?

Well its fine now it only lasts a day or two after I take Diphenhydramine.

So this numbing feeling that SWIY got, SWIM is curious, was this pleasant and how much would one have to take to get this numbing experience and would it be followed by hallucinations.Plesant with little or no side effects? or very unpleasant?

My friend Swim tripped on diphenhydramine a handful of times before deciding that it wasn't particularly enlightening. He now takes it purely for its (valued) antihistamine capability, and generally in advised doses (50mg).

He has noticed that, whilst on a regular, advised dose, he is a different person. Took him a while to figure out what it was. He feels numb and robotic even on normal doses of DPL. He's less genial, more irritable, and not all there. It doesn't seem to affect his work performance, only his mood.

Kinda makes sense, because fluoxitine (Prosac) was derived from DPL. Swim was told by several experienced friends that SSRIs generally make one "numb".

swim is guessing it has to do with the allergy properties that come with it. swim used to take it all the time for itchy skin type allergies, and it would numb the body somewhat....but he thinks that is part of the drug that should not be supprising.

SWIM sometimes notices this numbing feeling. It's more psychological than physical, I think.

He only notices it with Diphen if he tries to, however, He's noticed some serious depression going on with a certain supermarket's herbal sleep tablets. I think it may be the same or similar thing.

EmperiorJack - Does it feel as if a) you wanna rest, not sleep b) you prefer being alone c) nostalgic and regretful d) a tiny bit miserable?

That's what SWIM says he feels.

diphen is a major downer. the next day after a big trip, SWIM will feel tired, listless, numb and very very dull. Diphen is a drug that can stay in your system for up to about 24 hours with the correct dosage. SWIM often feels lightheaded and still a little delirious when he wakes up the next day.

that's why swim knocked it on the head- exactly what emperor jack said. Felt completely out of touch, almost immune from the lows in life but also missing anything decent. Also worried about long-term training of the brain to act dumb. It's not so much as depression in that you rarely have bleak thoughts or have doom for the future but rather mental indifference which doesn't actually ever get into 'happiness'. Experiment in mood control over!

SWIM has the EXACT same effects.. there is nothing he really laughs at alot unless it is extremely funny.. swiy is not the only one.. he hasnt took any dph in like a week also

Read: Diphenhydramine is a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. Constant use would likely yield similar "zombie effects" as mentioned by SSRI users. Check out the anti-depressants forum for more info on these side effects.

That is fascinating- I had got some vague memory (dph again!) about that but that's really interesting. Kind of puts prozac into a new light and sets you thinking about even prescribed medicating as to how safe it really is. I couldn't truly empathise with these people who said prozac made them do some very weird stuff and kind of wrote it off, unfairly, to exaggeration and lawsuits but now..from what I've read, I don't think lawyers have cited SSRI proximity to DPH as an argument for the plaintiff but that could be due to it being a very specialised field with very little data, even the docs I've met seemed sceptical about the addictive/disruptive powers of deleriants. I think they are addictive, potentially at 'low' doses.

Swim is usually very anti social when on diph. He fears any type of sound, or even motion. Only one swim is alright by is his friend who would'nt suspect him of being high. Swim is not so much fearful of the sound itself but merely the possibility of what could be in it. (Swim feels like whenever his mom talks shes about to catch him and say it) And such. As for numb.... no. Swim always remember a bit of miserableness in it. thats why he barly if at all does it anymore

same. when swim wants to just get away from people, he'll take a low dose of diph. but even when swim's up around 400mg, he can still act sober, exept for the terrible short term memory loss
