Calamus Experience
last weekend, I went to my local herb shop and bought an ounce of whole Calamus root. I gound it up in the blender and devided it in half. I took a spoonfull of powder and washed it down with water every 5 or 10 minute till my half was gone. I heard that it can give a similar effect as a low dose of mushrooms. Well guess what. Nothing happened till about 4 in the morning. I woke up and had projectile vomit in my bathroom. I puked every 10 minutes for 3 hours. Calamus has a chemical in it that helps you produce bile, so I was pretty much puking up pure bile. That was the most bitter thing in the world I have ever tasted. Its like taking 10 pain killers and chewing them and getting every last bit of flavour. The taste of the bile made me puke even more.
I think to get the effects from injesting it this method you have to take a spoonfull every 20-30 minutes from what I read to let your stomach break it down before the next load. I have heard from people that it works and they get mild visuals and feel very adventurouse, so im looking for a way to injest it that is garunteed for me not to throw up. I think if I talk too much more about this I will puke again. If any of you find a good way to get the effects let me know. thanks. |

supposedly, you're supposed to eat a lot after ingesting calamus to reduce the nausea. i followed this advice when i tried calamus, eating something every time i felt sick. this seemed to work, but i had never tried calamus before so i have nothing to compare it to.

Acorus Calamus, also called Rat Root and Sweet Flag, has long been used by the Native peoples of the northern US and up into Canada - this being known as Turtle Island until what's-his-face floated over here in boats from Spain.
Small amounts of the root, about an inch long with the diameter of a pencil, are chewed to combat fatigue and increase stamina during long walks and hunts. It also is known to allow better seeing in the dark. While this may sound similar to the use of Coca by the Inca people, and it is, there the similarity ends. Calamus does not induce euphoria to speak of or have the CNS stimulant effects of Coca or other known stimulants. Bongo knows of a very large patch of Calamus, and goes there periodically to take a few cuttings for medicinal use. Though it has been written up that large amounts - over 10 inches/25cm - of the root can elicit psychedelic effects, I never witnessed this happening to anyone who was brave/foolish enough to chew and swallow such an amount of this highly bitter and weird tasting critter. But thay certainly did discover the purgative effects. All over their walls! But a small piece will help one stay awake and alert for a night if needed. On the medicinal side, I have employed it for people suffering from stomach flu. Brewed as a strong tea, a few inches of root will induce powerful vomiting. After this has passed, most people then note their symptoms disappear. Going guess is that whatever the bug is that was making them sick met the Calamus and ran for it's life! Finally - Walt Whitman. Though I have seen no references to his actually using large amounts of Calamus, he did write about the beauty of young boys with Calamus root hanging from their necks in a necklace configuration. Walt was, after all, gay with a penchant for younger guys. Guess the neo-Christians will be trying to outlaw Calamus soon... |

I had a very similar experience to yours. I took a large amount of calamus and fairly small amount of aminitas both of which I had never tried. Yes, I know this was stupid. So once I started vomiting I did not stop for over 4 hours. Like you I don't think I went more than 10-15 minutes without vomiting and it would happen where I would throwup bile then dry heave a few times then in another 10mins or so do it again. Eating did help extend the time between vomit sessions but I think I was way past the point for that to help much. Fortunately I was not trippuing hard but I was definately altered to an extent that did not help at all. It was without a doubt the worst expereince of my life. For weeks I couldn't think about it without feeling sick and getting goosebumps. About a year later I tried chewing the root and it gave mild affects. For what your looking for I'd definately reccomend a low dose of a psychedelic drug. |

I have not tried calamus but I have read a bit about it. The most interesting thing is that according to at least one person there are multiple strains of calamus (I have no idea whether it is true or not). They claim that the asian variety is the one that causes the nausa. http://www.erowid.org/herbs/calamus/calamus_info1.shtml That is erowids record of the report.
It also seems that the FDA is aware that Aserone is related to TMA-2 http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/e...ingsample.html Hope that helps |

"That was the most bitter thing in the world " hahaha they all say the same for any known etnobotanicals, peyote, san pedro, nutmeg, zacatechichi, kava (and so on and so on) DO NOT taste good that's for sure....but they have to accept the fact that not many ethnobotanicals would taste much better than "the most awful tasting stuff in this world"

Artemisia absinthium can rival that title. SWIM has tasted both, but is unable to continue drinking after the first sip of either of them. SWIM has a lot of will power to eat or drink whatever, but this hits some kind of primal barrier. Calamus does not come close in that regard.

Swim find acorus calumus quite refreshing in comparison, 20-30g dried, boiled for 5-10 mins, filtered and mixed with one shot of vodka and cordial.... minty. Effects are mild but encourage sociability and reduce fatigue very well. |

Re: Calamus Experience
Acorus Calamus! yey! Known as the sweet flag iris would the Yellow flag iris and blue flag iris of the british isle have the same affect? note that these two species mention have different scientific names but morphologically, they are the same. i.e wet loving plant with long cylindrical tuber.

Re: Calamus Experience
known as sweet flag, but sweet it is not. swim chewed a root of this 2 yrs ago.. swim didn't find it bitter, but had bite in taste, like dandelions... it lit swim's tongue on fire like spice. swim spit it out, so swim gives you props for eating it. swim is sorry about the 3 hr puke session swiy had.
swim knows from research that sweet flag does that.. swim will not touch this again, solely due to taste. swim also agrees wormwood is bitter too. |
