New Suboxone Patch

Swims doctor told him a lil about it on his last visit, and said thats what he'd be getting from now on. Have any other swimmers out there tried it yet? Swim read what he could about it on the suboxone website.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Is swiy talking about the new strips?
I haven't heard anything about a patch, but RB just came out with sublingual strips which are supposed to take care of some of the complaints about the suboxone/subutex tablets (the taste, the difficulty of reducing the dose, and transportability).

Considering that RB's patent just expired, methinks this is their attempt to retain as much of the market as they can, yet I still want to try the strips myself.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Buprenorphine patches have been available for a while, I was prescribed them earlier this year. They seem quite effective, although I do know that not everyone can get on with them. It would cut down on abuse issues though, cos subtracting the bupe from the patch is a nightmare and so time consuming.

yup, but that's really pain patches, they are not intended for use in drug substitution, as far as bobbin knows, since they do not contain naloxone. could naloxone be administered transdermally? if so, a transdermal formulation of suboxone might make sense.

on the other hand, seeing that subutex is without naloxone, it might even be good to use the regular patches in certain patients with less "severe" addiction.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Actually, ask missparkles stated, bupe already comes in patch form, like Fentanyl & Nicotine & Birth Control. *L* These you would stick to your body for a period of time, just as you would for a Nicotine patch. Down-dosing with these would suck, because there's no ability to break into pieces or dissolve into a known quantity of fluid, like many people have done to self-detox with (usually ill-gotten) buprenorphine.

However, *THE* "Hot New Thingtm" are Suboxone STRIPS, which, as mentioned above by Riggs, are also sublingual, much like Suboxone is now, but with far less, well, *stuff* that has to dissolve. From what I've heard & read, they're going to be similar to, say, Listerine Breath Strips, only you put them UNDER the tongue, instead of ON the tongue.

I think the strips sound like a great idea, because I hear trying to hold all the filler & such in the Suboxone sublingual tablets can be difficult without swallowing, which, as we know, diminishes it's efficacy.

So, it's interesting...I'm curious which one SWIY's doctor was referring to. Make sure to come back and update this thread with the info on either one!!

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Okay, finally swims pharmacist has shed some light on the sublingual strip situation. The reason for this new formulation is simply a business ploy to keep people buying because the patent is up next year, and are you ready for this, there WILL be plenty of generic forms of Suboxone hitting the shelves in 2011!!!!! Yaaaaay, which means that there will be plenty of cheaper alternatives to the expensive "brand-name" suboxone!!! So to RB!!! They have given everyone a $75-off each monthly refill card, that can be used until 5-2011, but that still only helps so much. As any swimmers that take it know how expensive it already is to begin with. So there it is, and btw, swim has been looking all morning for the film in his area and has only found one pharmacy with it in-stock, and even they dont even know what strength it is because they havent even opened the box yet! So happy hunting to anyone thats gonna be getting it! Hope this helps a little! -Banger

swims says, he likes the film much better. It dissolves in like 3 mins for him, and that is awesome compared to 10-30 mins for the pills.

I suspected as much. One of the main things you hear from people going on Suboxone maintenance (or on a detox, I suppose) is how gross they taste & how long they have to keep that gross tasting stuff under their tongue. *LOL*

I mean, I know it's just a way for them to get around patent loss, but I also think it sounds like a really good method of administration. Also, people can't "take" them, like as a pill - I heard a guy one day saying he "needed" 3 Suboxone at a time because he was such a "big guy" & he was tall AND heavyset, but it turns out he was taking them like tablets, not sublingually. Well, duh. I did explain to him how they work, but I don't know if he believed me/changed his wasteful habits.

I'm pleased to note that addicts have a Suboxone alternative.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Yeah, swim is trying to notice any difference in the effectiveness right now, but the film seems to be exactly the same in the way it makes swim feel. He didnt expect much difference cause after all its the same mg qty of the same drug. It makes swim nice and warm, thats it, not high at all, just perfectly normal and jus a touch of good, lol!
Swim is petrified about coming off this stuff, he always has that thought buried down deep that pops up once or twice a day, that one day he will be using again, it seems like every period of sobriety that he has had was just a "break" and he knew it the whole time he was clean, and every time he DID go back out! This is exactly what scares him, he has that same exact feeling this time around! like, yeah, i need to get that rush again, wow its gona feel so good!! WTF?!?!? How can someone in active RECOVERY be thinking this shit every single day and even hope to stay clean for one hour, much less days months and years?!?!??!?!? Just starting to feel that swim has been robbed, and there aint no fucking light at the end of no fuckin tunnel for him! So he makes his own light, get it?? Maybe he is just crazy.....

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Okay, swim has just noticed that the sublingual film may actually inhibit some of the bupe from getting absorbed, because the effects dont seem to last nearly as long as the sublingual pill. Seems strange because they dissolve so much quicker, but that fact may be the precursor to the issue. If the film dissolves before the bupe is absorbed, wouldnt that just leave the bupe to flow freely around one's mouth once mixed with saliva. If so, one would likely swallow a substantial amount. So swim is now debating the value of the $75-off card to be used for every refill. If swims only getting the equivalent of 2-4mg out of each 8mg film, he's STILL paying out the ass for these things, prolly even more so now! Maybe the sublingual pill is more efficient. Swim is definitely gonna get a few pills next script and pay super close attention to this.
And btw, these lil pieces of film are very difficult to place under ones tongue in just the right place without them sticking to your fingers or anything else that has the least little bit of moisture on it, i.e. teeth and gums. And sometimes, before swim can even get the film in the right spot, half of the film has already dissolved !

Re: New Suboxone Patch

Swim is reducing his dose of generic bupe using 0.4mg tablets, if he crushes the tablet it dissolves much quicker in the mouth. He finds a cup of coffee 20 minutes later deals with the rotten taste.
Have never heard of these strips though.

guesing thats temgesic then, right? if so, are those sublingual as well? and if so, wouldnt crushing them DRASTICALLY reduce the BA, causing the bupe to be metabolised in the stomach?

and oh yeah, swim almost forgot that he promised a pic of the film itself, to go along with the packaging, so here it is, sorry for the poor quality, took the pic with swims iphone, which gets fuzzy up-close. As swiy can see, the film has the "N8" imprint as well. And they taste indentical to the lemon-lime pills too!

SWIM took two pics for you to examine these ones are the same size as the original subutex, the other ones are small round tablets. They are only crushed when being taken in the chemist, reason for this is that it's faster, although the makers of the tablets state that they shouldn't be crushed because they have not done quality tests on crushing.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

^^^ yeah, swims pretty sure those are meant to be absorbed sublingually, the firts pic looks like the 4 mg subutex pills they gave swim in rehab. But anywho, the bioavailability of buprenorphine drops DRASTICALLY when consumed orally, so in swims opinion only, one should stick to letting these pills dissolve under the tongue to get the most out of em. Any other way is a waste, to him anyways!

Sorry SWIM should of mentioned that when he takes them it is under the tongue. Initially he would snort some but this lead to damage of the ear canal, which has has to take a steroid spray for now.

Re: New Suboxone Patch

okay, swim had a revelation yesterday at his Doctor's appointment. Turns out, swims been putting the film in his mouth wrong! The nurse showed me how to do it right, which is folding your tongue back where you can see those big bluish veins on the bottom of it, then "STICK" the film to your tongue itself, she said my pharmacist shoulda told me that, because they barely work any other way!! So, swims uneasiness about the film was right, although misled. Swim hopes this helps somebody else later down the road that went through a rough first couple of days like swim.

This is a late bump, but if you still get thread updates I hope you can reply on the efficacy when stuck under the tongue properly. My doctor will be switching me to these soon so the info will help very much! I may find my answer elsewhere on the site, but have not yet.
