Months for getting busted
Someone told SWIM that December and January were big months for the authorities to be watchin people and making busts. Anyone else heard this? And if so, what is the reasoning?

I wouldn't assume that there are certian months to watch out for. All the months of the year are the months that the authoritieswatch people and make busts.

So it is true. Thats messed up if there is a quota for the end of the year, because that means that there are people out there gettin' arrested for nothing because the PD is getting pressure by a FU*KING quota. Thta's no good. |

From what I have read, cops do not have "hard" quotas (e.g. make 100 arrests this month or else), but anyone who is far below the department average for tickets and arrests might hear about it from their supervising officer. If December and January tend to be higher arrest months, I would only think because more people are travelling on the highway for the holidays (speeding tickets), and more people are getting drunk and driving (DUI and any other drugs they have in the car.) Major holidays in the US like New Year's Eve and the Fourth of July are notorious for a high presence of cop on the roads, so around those times you should definitely be extra careful. |

Aside from the holidays I seriously doubt LE plans to do more busts/arrests on certain months, but in some neighborhoods every month is a "big month". When it comes to street cops one thing they are notorious for is underpatrol/overpatrol. So, when you don’t seem them for a while watch out.

I know at least where I used to live that there are quotas for cops. They will tell you different of course, since the Law is supposed to work above that kind of thing, but its the truth at least some places.
Also, it seems to me that from what I hear out of the U.S. that some states appear to be all for the drug war, arresting and giving sentences for small drug "crimes" while other places like Denver and California with the medical marijuana and decrim are going the opposite direction. Is this the case, or is it just me? I guess that word "polarization" comes out from the US frequently in terms of your political state that I may have started to believe it without real evidence. |

Yep, all LE agencies have quotas. A cop’s job is to protect and serve the state and keep the money rolling in. Crime is big business and ~80% of crime is drug related.

Yeah, at least around here they tend to up the street patrol from around
Thanksgiving through New Years... like said above, more people traveling, more holiday parties = drunk drivers. Also that people tend to generally have more problems driving in the winter in general (you know, snow and all). I always watch it around any major holiday. The only thing you can do is be careful, be safe, and don't do anything stupid... Which reminds me of something dumb... there's this stupid commercial they're playing on the radio right now about DUI: "If you drive hammered, you're gonna get nailed." |

Many states, such as Texas, have laws specifically prohibiting quotas in law enforcement. However, many federal aid programs (especially drug and drunk driving programs) have quotas that must be met in order to continue receiving funding. So yes, the police and sheriff's departments will break the law if it keeps money rolling in.

Don't forget about election years for the sheriff or DA, they got to fool the voting public into a false sense of security. But the congress has cut funds to the task forces, they got to figure out how to make up that money.
