Can you infect others with herpes by sharing a pipe or joint?

SWIM said,
Quote:
so here's my story... don't even know if i have herpe's (cold sores) but my gf past left a sore on my cock so i guess that how it goes, regardless of the negative at the doctors office and my gf's positive. We never 'figured' it out and she left country. So judge this any way you want but now i have the disease and somehow perhaps a decreased appreciation for its effect even though i've heard it talked about in distaste before...at the time i was a kid and didn't give a shit.

TLR i got herpe's or cold sores at a late age

I had been smoking a fair amount daily at that point and often with freinds (two of whome it turns out were possible sources or some shit like that...)

I continued smoking with people though i got to the point of trying to stop progression of the pipe around the circle initialy... my attempts were apparently hap hazzard and got caught up in a ton of other shit that was happening at the time so me and my freinds never came to a head about it

and just other people that were around at the time

since then i'm in a new place and i went to smoke with some person and nice and absent minded forgot about it untill my sorta last minute attempt to stop him didn't really get to it and it just sorta slipped under the carpet again.

My question is wtf... why arn't we outfited with dual mouthpeice pipes of some sort...

this bullshit is a big drain on my stone sometimes... even when i'm not around a group of other stupid fuckers.

Re: Smoking with herpes

The chances of passing on any infection are extremely tiny, unless the other person has open wounds or sores of their own.
Every one of us has the herpes simplex virus in the form of coldsores, which are highly contagious when open sores.

A good stop might be a specialised GUM (genito-urinary medicine) clinic, available at most hospitals and some family planning clinics.

Re: Smoking with herpes

Researching the web tells me that herpes is indeed extremely common but the information presented causes me some confusion. E.g. http://www.herpes.org.uk/
says that not everyone carries this virus, 70 percent have it & around 10 percent have genital herpes. Its so common that if you have normal relationships you will probably acquire it in some form. But if you look at different types of herpes the infection rate is almost universal.
Although at this time it cannot be eradicated the body does deal with it effectively most of the time. It seems that it is more normal to have it than not. It has been stigmatized in the past. As the above site says we acquire other viruses that become a permanent part of us and no one worries about those.

Re: Can you infect others with herpes by sharing a pipe or joint?

Cold sores / herpes simplex virus is only contagious if the person has an outbreak. When someone has an outbreak, then HSV is highly contagious and sharing of joints and pipes is not advisable. When there is no outbreak (no sores) then it is generally not contagious.

Re: Can you infect others with herpes by sharing a pipe or joint?

According to a post I found on www.herpesdoctor.com, you CANNOT pass on Herpes to someone else without directly contacting them. Here is the quote:

Quote:
No, you can only get Oral Herpes from intimate physical contact with some one who already has it. The virus will only survive a fraction of a second off human skin. And you can't get your own cold sore anywhere else on your body.
If you are still concerned, use a lighter to quickly burn the end of the pipe before inhaling. Personally, my friend SWIM would still not take the risk, it it really isn't worth the consequences. Just roll 2 joints and smoke them together!

Also, just because there is not a CURRENT outbreak does NOT mean it isnt contagious:

Quote:
Unfortunately the virus is not only contagious when there
is a visible outbreak, it is also contagious just before
the outbreak and in the viral shedding period.
