You can safely take 20mg. SWIM
's doctor says he actually prescribes that for people who have taken it nightly long enough and been unlucky enough to build a tolerance to the 10mg (highest dose singe pill).
However, SWIM's psychiatrist basically said there is a cutoff point around 20mg where the GABA receptor it targets isn't going to make you any "more" drowsy. Basically, you might increase the amount in your body enough to make it take a bit longer for it to be eliminated from your system, so perhaps it might buy a little more time asleep once you're there.
As for the anxiety SWIY mentioned and the ineffectiveness of Xanax
is a nasty drug
if you have anxiety issues. It doesn't actually produce any positive effect from the GABA receptors responsible for anxiety, but it will still build an individuals benzo
tolerance across the board. When SWIM was taking Ambien to sleep at night, his tolerance to his Valium
and Xanax became so high, he was taking more than double what he does now (he's cut back on the Ambien to twice a week at most, once ideally).
If SWIY doesn't have anywhere to be in the morning, alternate the Ambien with OTC sleep aids. It will seriously help keep both the drug effective when it is taken, as well as keep the Xanax effective for anxiety.
