Lightbulb Myths About Psilocybin Mushrooms

I was wondering what exactly causes the hallucinating effect. I ask this because I heard that its because your brain stem bleeds and results in the effects of shrooms.

Thats totally untrue. Hallucinations are caused by the active compounds in shrooms, which have an stimulating effect on the 2a serotonin receptor, causing you to hallucinate. Shrooms have been researched extensively and there where no physical dangers found. The only liabilities of shrooms are thatin case of existing unsurfaced psychosis may surface by the eruption of feelings.

Myth Busting

Ok, so I'm going to do this weekend and i already bought what is about 2.5-2.9 grams. I want to know if anyone knows the answer to these myths about so that i can be better prepared for the weekend.

1. Do the inside of the stems really have to be purple for it to have psilocybe in them, mine have blue in spots and what not but not like bright purple or anything like that.
2. Do you really puke everytime you do them, my friends stepdad says hes done it about 50 some times and everytime he has puked.
3. Will the psilocybe decompose or whatever if I wait until friday to dothem, its monday right now so i dont want them to just be useless by the time to trip comes around.
Thanks for the help

1. No, the insides of the stems dont have to be purple to contain psilocybe. The colors vary, depending on the strain.
2. No, you do not necesarily puke every time you do 'shrooms. SWIM has never puked due to 'shrooms, and has eaten his fair share. Some people are more susceptable to mushie nausea than others.
3. No, the psilocybe will not decompose any significant amount if you wait 4 more days to eat them. Just to be safe, keep them in a dark, dry, cool place.

Consider these myths busted. Have fun!

Are these fresh or dried? The purple is in large measure from a "bruising" reaction. If fresh Psilocybe Cubensis are bruised (when they're fresh) they'll often dry with a purple-blue coloration; if not, they won't.

No. A friend of mine very rarely pukes when he eats them.

If they're fresh, refrigerate them and they should be fine. If they're dry, they should last much longer than that.

I don't know where people get this, but if you get ANY high from smoking mushroom flesh, it's your lungs attending you you are smoking pure carbon! Psilocybe certainly won't hold out in high temperatures, let alone smoking. Just eat them

Then, if kept in a cold dry place, they won't decompose for years. They will gradually lose some potency, but that will take months to happen. Just don't keep them in a hot and humid place and they'll be fine.

Just an aside, the blue color is oxidized psilocin. It is good if they are a little blue, that is *generally* a good indication that they are in fact "magical", but too much will mean that alot of the good stuff has been destroyed due to rough handling and improper storage.

Never puked on zoomers.

Re: mushroom brain hemmorage?

Absolutely none. The binding of serotonin receptors is what makes a person trip. A brain haemmorhage would kill you, plain and simple.

Do they really do that?

Swim keeps hearing swims friends say that magic mushrooms make your brain bleed and that is how a hallucinogenic reaction is created. Swim assumes this is one of those many things you hear about drugs that just isn't true. But swim is curious as to if it actually is true. On the subject, swim was also wondering, what damage do psychedelic mushrooms actually do to your brain and your body, if any?

Re: Do they really do that?

Seems like this question was recently asked...so I'll make this succinct. Mushrooms do not make ones brain bleed. They operate and cause hallucinations by binding a certain subtype of serotonin receptor. Mushrooms are generally regarded as physically safe since an overdose is nearly impossible, and SWIM doesnt know of any long-term physical problems from their use. However, psychological problems could potentially develop as the result of a bad trip.

In some ways, use of mushrooms might actually be beneficial to ones health from the viewpoint of migraine prevention and consciousness-inducing or -expanding (if one believes Terrence McKenna).

Sorry, I didn't know it had been recently asked. But thank you for the infromation. I believe alot of what Terrence Mckenna said, in my opinion he was a really smart man. It's a shame he's no longer with us, he came up with a lot of interesting theories.

We can safely add this idotic tale of brain-bleeding from 'shrooms to the same list as: LSD stays in your spine forever. Along side of if you take LSD and see cartoons - you will die!

Re: Do magic mushrooms make your brain bleed?

One of the more common urban myths about magic mushrooms. Why on earth would anyone ever touch them if they did such a thing? The sheer logic of this notion is ridiculous.

Swim honestly doesn't believe things like that himself, he knows that most of what you hear on the street is bullshit. But, swim never even thought of the fact that brain hemorrhages actually kils you, now that he thinks about it, it's a pretty dumb rumour. Swim suspects most of the rumours there are about drugs are spread around by the police and that's how people end up believing them. It works though, swim knows a few people that won't try LSD or shrooms just because of all the bad things they have been told. Unfortunately alot of people where swim lives think that shrooms make your brain bleed. Swim will just have to educate them .

Re: Do magic mushrooms make your brain bleed?

If SWIY is ever trying to find out whether a particular drug does something bad to your body, and SWIY doesn't have time to wait for a response here, a good place to look is PubMed.

PubMed is a database of hundreds of thousands of academic scientific (inc. medical) papers. Because scientific method is a robust way of gathering data, serious science hasn't been compromised by the War on Drugs (insidious though it is). It values knowledge and many rigorous studies are carried out into the effects of various drugs on the human body.

SWIM just remembered you need a subscription to read some papers (although the abstracts, which often contain inciteful conclusions, are free). If SWIY is at university, SWIY probably has access anyway. If SWIY doesn't have access at all to a paper, SWIY could always ask for a copy on these forums...

Lightbulb Does Psyilocibin interfere with spinal fluid?

SWIM would love to hear some opinion on this. Does Psyilocibin interfere with the regulation of cerebrospinal fluid?

On one hand most research on psilocybin concludes that it is 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A and 2C agonist (and possibly 5-HT2B, since many including SWIM report those dang old mildy upsetting stomach contractions on shrooms even when SWIM is well fed). 5-HT2A is known to be a receptor at least partially responsible for the cerebrospinal fluid system. While LSD has shown to act as both an agonist and antagonist for this receptor. Psyilocibin has been shown to act mainly as an agonist. So what does this all mean?

On erowid I found this question here:

http://www.erowid.org/ask/ask.cgi?ID=59

Now DONT GET ME WRONG, I LOVE EROWID, but the admin who answered this post is a moron. He just answers with a total AD HOMINEM response.

I was hoping maybe someone could give a good argument that it doesn't interfere with the CSP systems who is a little more educated than "psilio" from erowid!

Thanks in advance

Mushroom myths

Here are some myths swim has heard about mushrooms, if you guys could let me know if they are false (which im assuming they are) that would be great

Dry mushrooms get you higher than wet mushrooms
the smaller the mushroom the more potent
caps get you higher
stems get you higher

any insight would be great, thanks!

Re: Mushroom myths

Dry mushrooms definitely have more of the active compound in them. Fresh mushrooms are 91% water by weight. Remove that water and you get a dry mushroom, 1/10 the weight but is just as strong.

Sometimes smaller mushrooms are more potent. If a mushroom is let to grow too large it will start to lose potency. But every mushroom is different and its really impossible to predict with very good accuracy the potency of a mushroom.

Re: Mushroom myths

Dry mushrooms don't "get you higher", they require lower dosages.

Mushrooms vary in potency based on far more characteristics than just size. Sometimes smaller ones are more potent, other times they're not.

Both caps and stems should be psychoactive though I can't say for certain which is more. I'm guessing caps are usually a bit more potent but consider the stems psychoactive as well.

Re: Mushroom myths

Somewhere SWIM read that caps and stems contain almost the same amounts of "magic". Bioasseys have confirmed this.

Wet vs dry. After factoring the difference in water weight, fresh, wet mushrooms have a different high than dry shrooms do. SWIM would say wet are "stronger".

myths

swim has briefly looked through a few search engines and has found little information on the affects that MM's have on ones brain. people tell swim that MM's are the most harmful thing to do because it "lines your brain with blood" "makes your brainstem bleed" ect. swim finds this hard to believe because he feels well the next day after tripping his balls off. he doesnt know what sources of information he should accept.

if anyone could help shed a little light on the situation then i could help swim out and give him correct information

thank you

Re: dangerous effects?

All lies. Not even myths, just lies, really. Mushrooms have no derogatory physical effects, either in the short term or the long term. Taking them too often (which even then can be hard to achieve because of tolerance) can sometimes make the user lose his grip on reality, but as far as physical danger goes, they're pretty harmless.
