I've been experiencing some bizarre lucid dreams of late that involve me flying over locations I know in real life. They are most interesting. One of my dreams saw me needing to get from point A to B which were about a mile apart. It started off with me on top of a roofless double-decker bus (something I've never been on) and then I just jumped off and started floating in the direction I wanted to go occasionally bouncing off the ground in order to build momentum because it was faster.

Another dream featured me having sex, but for some reason, every now and then I would just pull out and begin to bounce off surfaces and float around my house like I was in zero gravity.

Now I know certain dreams indicate certain mental states e.g. dreams of teeth falling out indicate anxiety or stress; but does anyone know what flying dreams are about? I would love to hear some people's theories on this. Any Freudians out there who know what this means?

The truth about dream interpretation is that symbols are not universal. True dream interpretation involves figuring out what an action or object means to you specifically - that's why dream interpretation books are a crock - they don't know the individuals head. Flying is related to jubilation or happiness, but is that what it means to you?

Talk about an answer that states that it isn't an answer, eh?

My life is pretty good at the moment, but it's not like I'm jumping with joy 24/7. Most of my friends know me as a bit of a pessimist and a cynic too, so that wouldn't fit the resume of a typically joyous person.

Anyone else floating around out there who might have a theory or might want to describe some of their own dreams?

I've been one who's had bizarre dreams for...well since I can remember. They don't seem to have much of a pattern as far as states of mind for me. Then again most wouldn't call me predictable.

The times I've had dreams of flying were either when I was dreaming I was dead, or suddenly discovered I could "fly" which was more like bouncing to a huge extent. This sounds similar to what you describe. To me, it seems like either a lack of control in life or just being free spirited. I haven't figured it out myself so I'm not sure if it would mean the same to you.

Strange dream subjects I've had include a plague of visible bacteria which could only be cured with mercury, a Silent Hill-like series featuring mostly bees, and the latest trend seems to be mirrors being portals to either other dimentions or places pretty far away (glass=wormholes?).

Sleep's never been much of a hobby of mine. Dreams make me feel unrested and I can't seem to get away from them. Might have to try some melatonin (sp?). It's either stress or my warped sense of humor trailing over to my subconscience.

I've had dreams like yours of floating around to places I know. Strange thing is in these dreams I can only view it like a screen. What I am trying to say is I wouldn't be able to see my legs or hands, just scenery. Some of the things were blurry and went by rapidly well others I could see clearly like a farm or a boat in the water. Also I am not one to stay in control of my dreams. When they get out of control or if something is bothering me it usually has a weird twist into a nightmare and feels quite realistic. My dreams are great, it's nightmares that screw me up the next day because I usually wake up before it ends or really close to ending. Instead it just breaks off with my eyelids opening.

SWIM's dreams of flying have always been as escape, especially when SWIM has been dissatisfied with work or relationships. Puddles also have a significance for SWIM: If she is having a nightmare then she knows that all she needs to do is jump into a puddle and she'll wake up safe in the real world.

Freud's explanation in The Interpretation of Dreams is that they are caused by a memory of playing as a child, things like being swung around by the arms or bounced on someone's knee. Children take great pleasure in these things, and they probably arouse some sort of sexual feeling. Freudisn't too sure of himself on this point, though, saying "I cannot, however, disguise from myself that I am unable to produce any complete explanation of this class of typical dreams."

Have you ever had the same experience while tripping? If not, chances are that you will experience outer body experiences while tripping in the near future. Your dreams may be the preparation for that. If you find this interesting you can focus on this when tripping. A search for 'body experience' in this forum will be interesting.Edited by: Alfa

I don't believe I have. I have experienced moments that have felt like outer-body experiences when tripping but anything experienced during a trip for me doesn't quite relate to any of my dreams. I guess I'll have to start taking higher doses.

its a damn shame, whenever i get lucid or find myself in a dream and
try to fly, i get like 3 feet off the ground. The cause i believe
is dream clarity.

Maybe you have some kind of connection with being in the air, or at
least the complete freedom of it. It seems your mind loves
freedom and bliss, so perhaps thats why you dream of being in such a
state. Just my opinion though, could mean something completely
different for you. Sounds like a great reoccouring dream though,
you should try taking some melatonin and/or b vitamins before bed to
see how well it enhances the dream.

BTW you should really study up and attempt an OBE next trip you have, i
have done a little bit of research on it so if you want i can give you
some pointers.

I'm all ears (well, err...eyes). SWIM currently has access to LSD, psilocybin mushrooms and mescaline cactus.

I always dream I'm flying. Most of the times i'm just being absorbed up
and I find it very dificult to get on the ground, some times i'm
floating, and when I have lucid dreams it's the best part...... then I
can fly any way I like and desire.
