According to swim
's keyworkers, the main reason that oral methadone
liquid is used rather than pills, is really very simple.
Almost all patients who start on methadone, at some point, will do a reduction, a taper. Normally decreasing by increments of as little as 1ml, sometimes even 0.5ml.
Liquid methadone is easy to measure accurately to the ml. Trying to make up 76mg of methadone by using tablets would be near impossible to do accurately, consistently. And would take f**kin ages.
She told swim that other factors like abuse potential etc. were very much secondary to the simple factor of dose control.
Besides, in the UK it's quite easy to buy litres of the stuff on the black market, from people who have take-home scripts but don't use em, or use as much as they're prescribed.
Swim's only been scripted tablets when he went on holiday, for the simple fact that he wouldn't have to carry litres of juice around ith him in 35 degree(celsius) plus heat(which is bad for the methadone). However, last time swim went on holiday, the dosey doctor just scripted him the liquid! And swim had to keep the litres of it in those delicate glass bottles in case customs wanted to check - which they have done in the past. Swim was camping aswell, the whole situation was a pain in the arse!
IV'n oral methadone solution is an extremely bad idea by the way, swim's only met one person who's ever done it, and the results were horrific, and smelly as hell. It's really, really not good for the veins, or organs.
EDIT - In addition, the only difference between oral methadone (liquid or pill form) and injectable ampoule methadone, is the time it takes for onset of effects. The injectable amps provide no rush, get you no higher, they simply start working after a few minutes as opposed to an hour or so. But the effects are just the same.
