New Zealand Takes Aim at Ammo

April 25, 2005

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority wants to recall the herbal energy drink called "Ammo," described as the most powerful energy drink on the market. The agency says the drink contains the legal high benzylpiperazine, which is not permitted in food in New Zealand. It is a controlled substance in the United States.

The authority is worried that children and adults may buy the fizzy drink at dairies and convenience stores without realising it contains BZP, the primary "party pill" ingredient. Associate New Zealand Health Minister Jim Anderton described the drink as "irresponsible."

"People are pushing the envelope to way out further than many New Zealanders would be comfortable with," he said.

Social Tonics Association of New Zealand (STANZ) said the case underlined the need for "sensible" regulation of the industry. "Clearly some legal controls are required," STANZ chairman Matt Bowden said in a statement.

Bowden said that while these products were safe when used as directed by adults, they needed to be behind shop counters and away from children.

Though Ammo the drink doesn't appear to be widely circulated in the U.S., BZP is on the Justice Department's "Drugs of Concern" list because of its "amphetamine-like stimulant effects."

"BZP is often taken in combination with other noncontrolled substances in order to enhance its spectrum of effects and has been promoted to the youth population as a substitute for MDMA at raves (all-night dance parties)," the DOJ said on its Web site..

Since 2000, there have been 83 cases involving the seizure of 18,000 BZP tablets and over 600,000 grams of powder, DOJ said. Seizures involving the combination of BZP and other noncontrolled substances included over 55,000 tablets and over 80 grams of powder. Illicit distributions occur through smuggling of bulk powder through drug trafficking organizations with connections to overseas sources of supply. The bulk powder is then processed into capsule, tablet, or pill form and distributed through organized networks.

Hmm. If BZP is that underground, might as well just sell meth instead.
Better IMHO. Odd they don't just make it themselves, given how easy it is.
BZP does have some special entactogenic properties all its own however,
which people have not appreciated by many. BZP, 5meoDIPT, DPT and
some type of GHB is one of the most sexually conducive and
stimulating combinations SWIM has ever tried. The only problem is the
peripheral vasoconstriction of the BZP, which could concievably be
counteracted by viagra, but has not been a big problem for SWIM.
Note that viagra with any other drug could be dangerous for some, so
proceed at your own risk. Most probably don't need to go there...

SWIM agrees that such a product of 'Ammo' is a step in the wrong direction. STANZ and Co. are having enough trouble trying to keep BZP-containing pills legal as it is without somebody doing doing this

Re: BZP (piperazine)

I realize this is an old thread, but it is the only one SWIM found that was like a general info BZP thread. Anyways, SWIM read something interesting in Drugs and controlled substances : information for students ( Blachford, Stacey.)

It said something like
Quote:
a horse that had won a race had it's victory repealed after testing positive for BZP also known as equus speed.
Equus speed. That's a new one. Couldn't find anything about it online. SWIM says he thinks it happened in the states around 2001.
