I'm always up for trying something new, as long as I think it won't kill me so when I was offered some propanolol I thought what the hell. I didn't really know anything about it other than it had been prescribed to my mate's sister, after she had been in a car crash, for anxiety. And that the side effects included hallucinations, loss of co-ordination, change in perceptionand some other things that looked like they would be quite fun. I had been at the pub that evening so was a bit drunk when we got to my mates. His sister then gave me the beta-blockers and I took them then left with my mate to go somewhere away from his house for a few joints. Took us 30mins to get where we wanted to and I was still feeling fine so I had a joint and all of a sudden the whole world got messed up. I was sitting down and found myself unable to move, I then started getting patterns floating across my vision and well as seeing random shapes appearing in the dark. I felt completely numb and really really relaxed. I didn't feel really messed up like I was gonna puke or pass out I just lost all co-ordination and the ability to move properly. My friends had to pick me up and they said I was a complete dead weight. Was funny as I could see myself acting like this but could do jack about it. About an hour later I went home barely being able to walk but feeling really good. Had an amazing sleep and felt fine the next day. I'm still not really sure what beta-blockers do to you though, anyone know more about them and their affects?Edited by: psychedelaholic |

Welcome to the fora! B-blockers are beta adrenergic receptor blockers. They slow down the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and in asthmatics can cause constriction of the bronchi (airways) inducing wheeze. I'd be concerned about you using them recreationally because they can induce heart-block, which is when the hearts natural (sinus) rhythm is suppressed and the heart has to rely on slower (+ less effective) rhythms generated from the ventricles: This can lead to cardiovascular insufficiency: Collapse, unconsciousness etc. Propranolol is a relatively short-acting drug so any adverse effects will be equally short acting. Longer acting b-blockers (such as atenolol) have correspondingly longer duration of adverse effects. B-blockers are often used to treat the physical manifestations of anxiety (ie: fast pulse, tremor) but they don't have any sedative effects to speak of. Although they can cause vivid dreams (perticularly the lipophilic drugs) the chances of getting any significant hallucinogenic effect without giving yourself a dangerous overdose is vanishingly remote. Incidentally b-blockers are a common cause of erectile dysfunction Edited by: jatelka

Hmm fair enough, I only wanted to try them once. Yer I noticed my heart rate slowed right down, I guess it was just the combination of being pretty drunk then getting stoned which made me trip out a bit.
