Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Naltrexone helps patients overcome urges to abuse opiates by blocking the drugs euphoric effects. Some patients do well with it, but the oral formulation, has a drawback: It must be taken daily, and a patient whose craving becomes overwhelming can obtain opiate euphoria simply by skipping a dose before resuming abuse. A preferable alternative for those likely to skip doses is the naltrexone implant, which may be surgically inserted under the skin. The implant provides a sustained dose of naltrexone to the patient, thereby preventing the problems which may be associated with skipping doses. It must be replaced every several months. The naltrexone implant appears to be a far more effective means of treating heroin addiction than the oral formulation.

Certain medications will work against the naltrexone such as Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Oxymorphone and other opiate/opioid narcotics. These medications should not be taken while on Naltrexone, as nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, chills, and sometimes numbness in the limbs may occur. Naltrexone may also interfere or counteract both low and high doses of over-the-counter NSAID medications.

Keep safe

Benzodiazepines are used to help relieve the discomfort of withdrawal if opiate agonists cannot be administered.

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Of course it wouldn't cure SWIYs addiction, it would just force all of the opiates out of their body and push them straight into full on WD. Think about it, if SWIY couldn't obtain heroin for the next month, would that cure their addiction? Sparkles recently took a pain meds (pentazocine) which is a strong opiate combined with an opiate agonist. This pushed her into very heavy WD that lasted for 11 days. It might have been longer, but she stopped the meds, and started taking 20 mgs of morphine sulphate for the pain, this seemed to over ride the WD symptoms, but it took a further 3 days.

Sparkles has quit heroin lots of times, and the WDs are quite ferocious, but they do begin to ease after 4-5 days. This WD (due to the naltrexone) was extremely nasty, lasted so long, and although not as fierce a WD as heroin, was just as uncomfortable, purely cos it seemed never ending.

If SWIY wants to quit heroin Sparkles would suggest UTSE and looking at the various options open to them, such as methadone maintenance treatment, or subutex/suboxone, with or without clonidine/lofexidine. You see, the beauty of these meds is that it allows SWIY to stabilise their drug use, deal with any problems they've accumulated whilst they've been using, and plan their subsequent recovery.

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Can SWIM ask why SWIY want to take the Naltrexone .. What is it SWIY wants to achieve?? Is it to stop the WD from heroin or is to see if they can get high with it??

SWIY needs to be more clear with his questions so that the folk here can try to give SWIY an answer to what they actually want to know!

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Naltrexone will not provide any kind of high whatsoever, nor is it a miracle cure by taking one dose to be over a heroin addiction. It might help relieve anxiety and some PAWS later on after withdrawal has been completed because it is still occupying the opiate receptors, but it will not get one high. Please clarify like the above posted stated of what your intention is of taking Naltrexone.

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Within a couple of hours of taking it, it feels like full on heroin WD, and yes, that is a nasty feeling. By the next morning (after taking it) Sparkles had achy limbs, she was shivering, perspiring, sneezing and yawning. She had diarrhea, and was sick trying to drink a glass of water. Her nose was blocked and she felt restless, unable to focus on the TV for more than a minute. She kept getting up and walking round, only to do the very same thing five minutes later.

Trying to sleep was a nightmare, cos every time she felt as if her skin was burning, she'd throw off the covers, only to pull them back on 3 minutes later, cos she felt as if she were freezing. When she did manage to sleep, when her legs kept weren't jerking her awake, the dreams were uncomfortable and quite scary. The kind that leave you feeling uncomfortable all the next day.

The emotional roller coaster is something else. Getting upset over the slightest thing, crying uncontrollably, and the next minute felling angry enough, she could have killed someone...literally. But the thing she hated the most was the feeling of not being connected to anything, not feeling, like her emotions were coming to her through a filter of cotton wool.

Sparkles.

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

So about a month ago swim was still addicted to oxy and found out the hard way that telling the truth to an addiction doctor was the best bet. After taking only 12.5mg orally of naltrexone, swim found himself in the worst wd's he has ever experienced. It was stupid, swim knows now how serious it could have been.

After only 6 hours of being in full wd's swim ended up in the ER begging for them to help. And that led swim to detox.

Trust swim it was one of the worst things he has ever done and strongly suggests that you DO NOT try this at home. Not to mention when it does wear off your still in wd's for a week.

So what did it accomplish for swim, besides learning his lesson. Nothing that's what

At the time swim was doing about 300 mg of oxy a day only weighing about 150 pounds and had not used for 24 hours prior to ingestion.

Re: What happens if you take high dose of Naltrexone?

Taking naltrexone will put a heroin addicted individual into rapid detox. It boots the heroin off of the receptors and is longer acting, so the heroin cannot bind back - like they can with naloxone. Some studies suggest that buprenorphine is a good rescue during naltrexone induced precipitated withdrawal, noting that it quenched the withdrawals and they were able to continue on with their rapid detox/tapers. Check this article out for more information on that.

When I was on naltrexone the first time (was on it twice for the record), I got cocky and skipped some tablets to use heroin. The following day I resumed naltrexone and had no withdrawals precipitated whatsoever. This gave me a false sense of security and I attempted to do this again. ~PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWALS WORSE THAN EVER BEFORE WITH SIMILAR SYMPTOMS TO COTTON FEVER~.

FUCK.

lol.

That day I scored heroin because I was desperate to rid myself of those god awful withdrawals. The heroin did nothing to me BUT it eased the withdrawal symptoms. So even though I didn't get high, it stopped me from hanging out like a mutant.
