if you express your severe pain to the doctor (and don't tell him you been pinching mom's stash), he'll probably give you something for it. from what i've seen, most doctors don't seem to mind giving something for legitimate pain unless the patient has had addiction problems. don't take my word as fact, though.

Most likely your doctor will give you some simple analgesia, paracetamol maybe, or a weak opiate like codeine or tramadol (or whatever the equivalents are where you live) you might also get an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory). Most doctors don't tend to give out muscle relaxants unless there's evidence of muscle spasm, and I'm not sure you have that

Try to express your injury as a sprain or strain, if you want to increase the chances of getting a skeletal muscle relaxant. Cyclobenzaprine is only one of the skeletal muscle relaxants, so even if you don't get CBP you could still be getting a drug that will help you. Metaxalone, Orphenadrine and Orphenadrine citrate, Carisoprodol and Meprobamate all share muscle-relaxant properties.

Hi,

From my perspective the experience I have with my family DR. and the one I had recently when delivered by ambulance to Emergency of the hospital where I'm registered are completely different.

The latter, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. It was the most frieghtnenining/demeaning and painful I have ever experienced.

For the last 7 years I have been treated for the pain associated with Stenosis and osteo arthrites of the spine. Over the years I've graduated from Tylenol 3 to Percs and now to Oxycontin slow release 40mg and Oxycodone (without the tylenol) 20mg for breakthrough.
Presently I take between 800 to 1200mg a day as I've become opiate tolerant. Aside from being prescribed these meds by my Family MD, I receive physio, accupuncure, massage and phycological councilling at a Spine Clinic connected to my hospital in Ontario Canada.

My goal is to decrease the amount of meds needed or atleast stabilize the ammount taken.

About three weeks ago I started to experience Sciatic Nerve pain which grew in severity to the point where even trying to hop on my right leg to the washroom ceated so much pain that I almost passed out. I didn't think I would be able to get to my wife's car to go to the hospital as I am 6'5" 230lb and she is not strong enough to support me so I called an ambulance. I had plently of my meds left but was afraid to take too much wihout the supervision of an MD.

I told the ambulance guys what I had been taking and in what ammounts. They checked my vitals which (they were amazed to find) were fine.

As I was wheeled into the hospital, every bump they hit with the stretcher caused me to scream in pain. They showed their report from the info I gave them to the admitting nurse who immdiately told me to stop screaming and accused me of being a drug addict.

I told her that I was not and that my history including Xrays and Catscans were on record here an were only about a month old. I also told her that my present pain had nothing to do with my chronic condition and that I did not fall and that I had had a Sciatic attach a couple of years ago and it went away after a week or so of bed rest but this one seemed to be much worse and even with bed rest was not getting better.

Both the nurse and the attending Emerg DR. completely ignored the info and didn't even refer to my file which was easy to lookup as the Spine clinic was in that hospital.

The dr. said he wanted me to have another Xray but said they were going to try and stabilize the pain first. I asked him to refer to my file which showed I was extremly Opiate tolerant. He ignored this and gave me a shot of 15mg of Demoral and a muscle relaxent which did nothing. I asked the nurse if I could take my own meds which my wife had brought to the hospital and she said NO. This was at 5:30pm

I was still screaming in pain and banging my left leg against the foot and sides of the bed when they took me up for Xray. It was too painful for me to transfer myslef from the gurney to the Xray table and there was no-one else there to lift me accross.

They then took me back downstairs where the nurse appeared anf gave me a shot of 75mg of Demerol on the dr's instructions "I guess because I didn't see him". By 12:30am, the pain was controlled enough for me to finally go for Xray and still in excruciating pain I was barely able to cross from the gurney to the Xray table.

Whithin 10min of getting back downstairs the dr. came flying into the room announcing in a tone like he had just found the cure for Cancer that he saw the Stenosis and the Arthritis and that I shold continue to take my regular meds and he also gave me a prescription for an anti-inflammatory and said he was giving me a shot of Morphine to get me through the night.

I was so discouraged and afraid that I didn't even bother to repeat that I had come to Emergency for Sciatica (which doesen't show up on Xrays) and I wouldn't have needed his friggen opiates if he had told me it was safe to take more of the opiates I already had.

My wife (who thank God never left my side) helped me into a wheelchair and wheeled me to the car and took me home.

It's been 2 weeks now and my left leg is still numb and caves in when I try and clib stairs. I did this to myself when I was banging against the hospital gurney in pain so I hope with time it will get better.

Her's the killer. My Family dr. told me that unfortuneately this experience will happen again if I show up at Emerg and tell them that I take alot of Opiates. They are programmed for this type of response and don't even listen to you when you tell them you have your own meds. They still thin your there to get drugs and treat you like an addict.

I hope this never happens to any of you and maybe in countries that don't have socialized medicine (FREE) it's different.

My Family MD. has now given me Morhine tablets to tide me over until I can see him if I have another Sciatic attack.

I NEVER WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE AGAIN.

y.

Hey dude, your leg is probably numb and weak because of a disc prolapse and not the thing with the bed sides.

I'd imagine it would be quite difficult for me to bang my leg repeatedly against the bedsides if I had sciatica - every movement causes spasms of agony and you just want to lie still.... Perhaps the doctor failed to diagnose your acute prolapse, as he was preoccupied with the fact that you ARE, technically, a druggie (considering where we are posting!).
You could sue them if he failed to examine you for numbness, reflexes, power in the limb and you were on record as mentioning numbness etc when you attended.
I advise you first to go back to your usual doctor - the one who got you hooked on oxy - and get him/her to examine you again before complications set in!

Hi,

Sorry but I'm not familiar with disc prolapse.

Rgarding the weak/numbness in left leg. it wasn't there during the sciatic attack. The sciatic pain is now gone. All that remains is teh ongoing arthritic and stenosis pain that I take the Oxy for.

The weak/numbness in left leg only started after my visit to Emerg.

The Spine Clinic has allocated a new dr. for me (one with more experience in Sciatica) I see him on the 7th and will inform him of my new symptoms (which are not painful)

I was watching a special on PBS about uing Poison Toxins in snakes and snails as medicine. There's a man in Vancouver who has "chronic sciatica", appantly he's the test subject of an anelgeisic made from a snails venom, (100 times more powerful than Morhine) which is non habit forming. I will mention it to the new md at the clinic and maybe I can be a guinea pig also.

My family dr. says I'll be dead from old age before this stuff (even if its great) gets approoved in Canada.

Y
