The ultimate absinthe reciepe !!!
Here's an absinthe reciepe I personally elaborated...it gives a very potent drink.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: - a still (a distillation apparatus with separation column, cooling device) -a thermometer -an alcoholmeter ( which can be bought for cheap from the internet or maybe from some liquor stores, it costs about 15euros) PREPARATION for 1L 70% absinthe liquor: note:70% alcohol = 140 proof (US), 90% alcohol = 180 proof Get a glass jar with lid. Add 800 mL 96% drinkable alcohol (I buy it in andorra where it's sold for preparing liquors). Important: you must use drinkable alcohol !!! (especially sold for making liquors with). Note: If you can only get 80% drinkable alcohol then it's ok too, but you can't use alcohol which is less than 80% Now add the following ingredients (each ingredient has to be ground into a fine powder!!!): -55g wormwood aka artemisia absinthium (dried leaves&stems) -40g anise (seeds) -55g fennel (seeds) -20g star anise (seed pods which are star shaped) note: if you can't find star anise, then replace it with 20g aniseed -5g angelica (seeds) -6g coriander (seeds) -3g camomile (dried herb) -3g calamus (root) -3g hops (dried herb) -1g nutmeg (fresh is better than dried) -1g oregano (dried herb) -0,5g cardamom (4pods of cardamom is 0.5g) -0.5g caraway (seeds) -0.5g cinnamon (bark) -0.5g cloves -20g dill (fresh herb) -6g parsley (fresh herb) Note: You will find most ingredients in places where they sell spices and herbs (market places). Some ingredients you will only find in herbalist's shops. But don't buy canned powdered spices from supermarkets: these are weak. If you cannot get some of these ingredients this is not a problem: the most important ones are wormwood, fennel and anise (others are optional but they are here to add to the psychoactive effects and also to the taste) Close the jar, shake well, and allow to macerate for 1 week in a dark place (shaking the jar 3 times a day). Filter the stuff using a piece of cloth (press & squeeze well to recover as much alcohol as possible). When filtration is completed, keep this alcohol in a closed jar. (note: measure how much alcohol you collected, this information will be useful later on) Also keep the plant mush, place it in a jar and add 400mL water. Allow to macerate for one hour (stir regularly). Then place the mix in a pressure-cooker and boil for 3hours (don't forget to close the pressure-cooker). Then allow to cool (without opening it) and then filter (same thing: through a piece of cloth, squeezing well to recover as much water as possible). Mesure the quantity of water you collected and add some water to complete the volume to 400mL (note: you can discard the plant mush now). Then add these 400mL to the previously saved alcohol and allow to macerate for 24 more hours. NOW here is the distillation step: Place the thermometer at the top of the separation column (you know how it works, umm?) You're going to heat the alcoholic solution at 80-90°C, 85°C would be perfect (this means the temperature should not go under 80 or over 90, so keep an eye on the thermometer) note: don't smoke just next to the still as alcohol vapours are very flammable ! At some point you will have collected a quantity of alcohol in the receiver which is about the same that you collected after the filtration process (that's why I wanted you to measure it): at this point heat at 100°C and regularly taste the condensated alcohol drops (which should have a strong flavor). You can stop heating when condensated drops will have become poorly flavoured. note: the last condensated drops are very important as these are very rich in essential oils. Keep the obtained alcohol in a closed jar. Now, Measure out a 350mL quantity of this alcohol and place it in another glass jar with lid. To this alcohol you will add the following dried and finely ground ingredients: -3g wormwood (leaves and stems) -8g hysop (dried flowers) -8g lemon balm aka melissa (dried leaves) -6g veronica (dried herb) -5g mint (dried leaves) -4g liquorice (root) -1g lemon peel (fresh) -and optional: I also use to add a small quantity of marijuana (let's say twice as much as you would use in one single joint) Close the jar, shake well and allow to macerate for 3 days in a dark place (shaking regularly). Then filter it through a piece of cloath (press and squeeze well) Filter once again through a coffee filter. Throw away the herb mush and add the filtered alcohol to the rest of the alcohol (the one from the other jar). Now the point is to get 70% absinthe so here's what you're going to do: Add 100mL sugar sirup to the mix. Then add 80 or 96% alcohol (depending on what you have) until the alcohometer indicate that the mix is 70% alcohol. If the total volume of the obtained solution is less than 1L, then complete it with 70% alcohol (that you can prepare in another jar by adding water to some 80 or 96% alcohol, just make the calculation yourself) Now allow the mix to sit for 24 more hours in a dark place and then put it in a glass bottle (just use an empty bottle of vine with cork cap as these are quite good for conserving liquors). CONSERVATION: if the bottle is correctly capped and kept away from light and heat it can be conserved for years (just store it as you would store a good bottle of wine: in your cellar) IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) RISKS & WARNINGS: This absinthe reciepe gives a very potent liquor which will have some strong narcotic effect. - Pregnant woman, people with liver or kidney troubles and people with cardiovascular troubles SHOULD NOT use it. - Don't drink such a potent absinthe too regularly or it would have neurotoxic effects (well I guess you all know about "absinthe making people creazy" story) - My absinthe reciepe is much more potent than nowdays absinthes you would find in spain, andorra, or so. It's as potent (or even more) than the absinthe Van Gogh was drinking... So I think it's much better if you don't drink more than 5 glasses (250mL) on your own within one single day (or night) so you don't ask too much to your liver and kidneys. - I also suggest you don't associate it to other drugs, psychedelics are ok I guess but no stimulants (avoid xtc, speed, coke and such) and no depressants (no opiates) 2) HOW TO PREPARE A SINGLE GLASS OF ABSINTHE: Place about 50mL absinth in the glass. Dip a sugar lump into the absinth and place it in a teaspoon (better use an absinth spoon). Add 100mL very fresh water into the glass (don't forget to do it before firing the sugar lump or you will also fire the all glass). So, take the teaspoon with the sugar in it, place it over the top of the glass and use your lighter to fire it: the sugar lump (which has alcohol in it) will start to burn and melt, when it's gone out, just drop it into the glass. Stir using the teaspoon and drink. 3) HOW TO ENJOY ABSINTHE: Now, the most important part of the knowledge of the absinth drinker: how to get psychoactive effects out of it. If you drink absinth too quickly, you will get very drunk (due to the high alcohol content) and the alcohol effect will overstep and kill the psychoactive effects (narcotic & mild psychedelic) from wormwood and other plants. So you have to find the good timing between glasses so you feel as "high" than "drunk" (if you're too quick you'll only be very very drunk). My advice is (I'm 70kg): don't be on empty stomach, and drink one glass (50mL absinth+100mL water) each 40 minutes, this way you could drink it the all day long without getting too drunk and preserving the high for the all day. Anyway this depends on the person, the point is that if you feel like one more glass is going to make you fucking drunk, then just do not take it and wait until you feel you can take it without beeing too fucked up, 40minutes between two glasses is a good timing usually (or let's say 30 minutes if you're a good drinker and you can easly handle strong alcohols). 4) ABSINTHE EFFECTS: If used correctly (I mean drunk slowly over a few hours), absinthe doesn't make you feel drunk like vodka or tekila would: you don't have blurred vision, you do not experience much dizziness or nausea, you're not confused and desoriented: you should feel stone (narcotic feeling), high, happy, clear headed and quite dreamy. You also feel quite social and talking is very pleasant, you may feel inspired & creative (thoughts are stimulated) or let's say a bit "space" in your head (ending up in very strange talking sometime). Aesthetic sense is increased: colors seem more bright/deep, things look nicer & everything would seem more interesting than usual. One could easly understand why artists used to enjoy absinthe. Definately a mild psychedelic (and not so mild), I love it ! If used the wrong way (drunk too quickly), you would feel mostly the alcohol effect: you get vertigo, confusion, you feel extremely drunk (due to the very high alcohol content), and you miss all the good part of the trip (as you're way too fucked up to notice the pleasant psychedelic touch). Also note that absinth is very nice to drink while smoking some good hash... Well, enjoy ! )Edited by: genaro Last edited by genaro; 02-01-2006 at 15:56. |
