Recreational Use of Doxylamine Succinate?
Has anybody any experience with this substance? It's an anti-histamine, so the trip will be anything like dramamine/diphenhydramine.... It's a deleriant, so watch out.. |

There was a report on bluelight not so long ago on this, the only such report I have read. Deleriants are nasty substances, usualyl highly toxic, and causing something far from a high, closer to an unpleasant fever hallucination, or acute psychotic episode. Stay away from deliriants, they are not fun and not worth it. |

This stuff can destroy muscle tissue at high doses. I would not recommend it.

One of the many sources for this info... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Citation I don't know how much of this stuff it takes to cause an overdose, but this talk of recreational use worries me. What worries me more is that no one seems to be aware of the very real risks of this medication. |

I tried it. It made me extremely tired and I only had closed eye visuals. I forget the dose but it was quite high. I fell asleep 4 hours later.

Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Now this isn't something SWIM plans on trying but he is wondering if anyone has just out of curiosity. One would think the effects at high doses would be similar to diphenhydramine seeing they are both anti histamines.

^^^ Does SWIY have a link to the abstract? (Or even better, could they upload the paper to the Drugs-Archive?)

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Hallucinations no. Sedation yes.
Only worth while OTC sleeping aid, in Smurfs opinion. He still needs a extremely high dose but works. |

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
SWIM, in his younger and much much stupider years, bought a box of N*Q*** liquigels or something along those lines. They contained DXM, yes, but they also contained a good amount of doxylamine succinate as well. After a long night of some g-bong hits, SWIM and his friend decided to eat the box of liquigels. Needless to say, they hit the floor in about 20-30 minutes, and woke up perhaps 5 hours later with a TERRIBLE hangover. SWIM feels that he probably took what could be considered a recreational dose, if there is any, of doxylamine succinate, but there were no recreational effects, just some serious sedation.

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Doxylamine will knock you flat - that's a given. Hence it's a major ingredient of NyQuil. The product is sold under the premise it will shut you up and make you sleep. See the ads: Barking, coughing miserable husband in bed. Wife can't sleep through his cacophony of a rhino-virus. Feeds hubby some NyQuil. He passes out. Wife sleeps with smile on her face.
Don't play with NyQuil, kids. It also contains a full dose of acetaminophen per dose - 1 gram. You'll sleep - but your liver and kidneys will hate you. Last edited by Nagognog2; 26-04-2007 at 14:56. |

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Well . . .
The intranasal route of administration provides a potential useful way of administering a range of systemic drugs. In order to assess the feasibility of this approach for the treatment of nausea and vomiting, doxylamine succinate was studied in rats for the pharmacokinetics (AUC, C(max), t(max)) following intranasal, oral and intravenous administrations. Subjects (six male Sprague-Dawley rats per time interval for each route of administration) received 2-mg doses of doxylamine succinate orally and I-mg doses intranasally and intravenously, respectively. The various formulations were formulated in isotonic saline (0.9% w/v) at 25 +/- 1 degrees C. Doxylamine succinate concentrations in plasma were determined with a high-performance liquid chromatographic assay and a liquid-liquid extraction procedure. Intranasal and oral bioavailabilities were determined from AUC values relative to those after intravenous dosing. Intranasal bioavailability was greater than that of oral doxylamine succinate (70.8 vs 24.7%). The intranasal and oral routes of administration differed significantly from the intravenous route of administration. Peak plasma concentration (C(max)) was 887.6 ng/ml (S.D. 74.4), 281.4 ng/ml (S.D. 24.6) and 1296.4 ng/ml (S.D. 388.9) for the intranasal, oral and intravenous routes, respectively. The time to achieve C(max) for the intranasal route (t(max)=0.5 h) was faster than for the oral route (t(max)=1.5 h), but no statistically significant differences between the C(max) values were found using 95% confidence intervals. The results of this study show that doxylamine succinate is rapidly and effectively absorbed from the nasal mucosa. Copyright 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Here swim discovers doxylamine is more effective intranasal but unfortunately overdose is common and includes somnolence, coma, seizures, mydriasis, tachycardia, psychosis, and rhabdomyolysis. A serious complication may be rhabdomyolysis with subsequent impairment of renal function and acute renal failure. A case has been reported of acute renal failure and acute pancreatitis complication from doxylamine succinate intoxication. Last edited by x cynic x; 27-04-2007 at 03:18. Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Is that damage from doxylamine succinate alone or from Nyquill (containing paracetomol)? Citations of those studies would be appreciated, X_Cynic_X, including links & authors where appropriate.

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Doxylamine succinate is a very, very effective sedative for me. The problem is that it lasts a very long time so I'll often wake up the following morning still feeling dog-tired. As far as I'm concerned, I might as well have not slept the night before...
I won't use it again unless I'm in discomfort and simply want to sleep through it (like gastro for example). Definitely not if I need to do something productive the following day. |

Re: Doxylamine succinate for recreation?
Doxylamine is pretty much the strongest sedative swim's ever taken. 50mg is stronger than 3-4mg of ativan for him. It's also much more restful than most sedatives he's had, and much moreso than diphenhydramine. It can lead to some vivid dreams also which can be pretty fun.
