Oxycontin and Tramadol?

SWIM wants to know if he can mix Oxycontin and Tramadol?? He is using Oxycontin 80's and he is snorting 40-60mg per day, he wants to know what would happen if he took a couple of tramadol while using Oxycontin. He is also drinking 6-8 beers per day.

Re: Oxycontin and Tramadol?

Interactions between:

Oxycodone <-> Tramadol

MAJOR interaction

GENERALLY AVOID: Concomitant use of tramadol increases the seizure risk in patients taking other opioids. These agents are often individually epileptogenic and may have additive effects on seizure threshold during coadministration. CNS- and respiratory-depressant effects may also be additive. In patients who have been previously dependent on or chronically using opioids, tramadol can also reinitiate physical dependence or precipitate withdrawal symptoms.

MANAGEMENT: Concomitant use of tramadol and other opioids should be avoided in general. Tramadol should not be used in opioid-dependent patients, and use in patients who are chronically on opioids is also not recommended. Tramadol is contraindicated in patients with acute opioid intoxication. Tramadol dosage should be reduced if it must be used in patients receiving opioids. Patients should be monitored for development of seizures and CNS and respiratory depression.

As this is a international forum, please use generic pharmaceutical names. The generic name of Oxycontin is oxycodone:

Whaaa?

1) Yes, respiritory depression combined is additive yes, but a MAJOR interaction? No.

2) Major seizure risk from tramadol + opioids? What? First time swim EVER heard this.

Swim extensively used and researched BOTH tramadol and oxycodone over the past few years. The dangers here are overplayed.

Mixing downers is a bad idea in general.

Tramadol's seizure issues come from the SSRI SNRI components it has, and not the opioid.

OP: If Swiy is eating that much oxy daily, the tramadol would do next to nothing. Swim compares 300mg tramadol (the ceiling of it!) to about 15-20mg oxycodone, MAX, in terms of general potency. And it won't stack more euphoric opioid effects with the oxy.

Oxy + tram + beer = big suffocation party.

Above poster, PLEASE do NOT repost generic, Drug industry sanctioned "info" from drugs.com. We might as well ask Dr. Sanjay Gupta and NIDA to provide info.

Re: Oxycontin and Tramadol?

I can't find any info that tells me for sure if this applies to oxycodone or not, but I know for a fact that taking tramadol with methadone actually reduces the efficacy of methadone. Going by this information, it seems that tramadol interferes with the levels of other opiates in ones body, and can send an opiate-dependent person into withdrawal by lessening the effect of the opiate they are dependent on.

Re: Oxycontin and Tramadol?

So swiy is mixing alcohol and oxycodone and wants to know if throwing a couple of tramadol on the bonfire would be OK?

Not a very good first post. This is a harm reduction site, swiy shold not expect anyone here to encourage this. Snorting oxy increases the potential for dependance and addiction. Using oxy in conjunction with alcohol increases the chance of dangerous respiratory depression. Risk of seizures from Tramadol are higher for those with a history of alcohol abuse.

Not a great idea.

Re: Oxycontin and Tramadol?

SWIM doesn't know too much about this. However, he's thinking if a synergy or potentiation could be possible. Tramadol affects the mu receptors in a certain way and many other neural systems as well. Oxycodone also affects the opioid system in its unique way and other systems too. A combination could be a nice high. Even if due to tolerance the effects will not be felt strongly the high will be felt differently due to activations that might help one another.

This is considered disregarding the possible dangers that might exist.
