Long term effects of MDMA overdose

About a month ago SWIM (28 years old 165 LBs) went to a concert and consumed a bottle of wine, 3 16oz. beers and was then offered a gram of 'molly'. SWIM acquired the 'molly' and tried two small bumps of the substance. No immediate effects were felt. Later on that night at approximately 1AM, SWIM got home and an amount approximately equal to 1/4 of the bag was sniffed. This is the last thing SWIM remembers. The next thing SWIM knew it was 7AM and the bag was empty as was the half bottle of wine that was nearby. SWIM can only assume that SWIM had consumed the remains of the substances, then passed out. Swims girlfriend was the only other person in the house and she had gone to bed promptly at 1AM. For the following few days SWIM felt like HELL, experiencing unbearable dizziness, paranoia, panic, depression, high pulse, vivid nightmares, pounding heart upon waking etc... SWIM waited 4 days before finally seeking advice from a doctor. The doctor prescribed 4 Librium's as a sleep aid. Two days later, when symptoms had not improved, SWIM went to the emergency room. SWIM was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder and released with a prescription for Ativan. Over the next two weeks the symptoms mildly improved while taking the Ativan. However, when the Ativan ran out, the symptoms returned with a vengeance. Today, almost a month later, SWIM has acquired another prescription for Ativan as well as Seroquel to help sleep. SWIM is also seeking help from a mental health professional. I am wondering if there is anyone else out there who has had a similar experience, and if so, will this ever get any better? Please help.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

Is there none of the substance left? Swim was going to suggest that Swiy get the 'molly' tested, as it's unlikely that actual high quality MDMA could produce such lasting ill effects.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

Unfortunately no, there is nothing left to test. SWIM is in no way an expert on 'molly' but the effects that SWIM remembers feeling the night that the substance was taken were consistent with an ecstasy high, although SWIM's vision got VERY 'shaky' that night, almost as if the eyes were crossing at a frequency of 60 Hz. Any ideas as to what else it could have been to create these side effects. Thanks for the reply.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

swim doesnt think this is an overdose, and he doesnt think that was actually molly. i think that swiy may have had some underlying psychologic problems, and was worried and confused about what happened that that night, which could have triggered panic attacks and anxiety. swim isn't a medical professional, but has had some similar things happen to him when he was strung out on dope and in a very stressful situation legally and would get himself so worked up, and couldn't even sleep with sleeping pills. id suggest laying off the drugs and look for a doctor who will do more than whip out the prescription pad instead of working at diagnosing swim and coming up with an effective treatment plan. inpatient psychiatric care (the psych ward) may be something that swiy could think about. swims experience is that to treat mental illness requires 3 to four sessions a week with a psychiatrist, which is hard to do because the good ones are booked out months in advance, so thats why he thinks a trip to the psych ward may be beneficial to swiy. swiy will get better, swim did, he no longer takes anxiety meds, anti depressants, but still has issues with insomnia, which he has had his whole life. swim was grossly over prescribed by a psychiatrist who hardly spoke english, and was pretty inexperienced in actual field experience. kept saying swim was bipolar, which he is not.

Post Quality Evaluations:
Solid, sensible advice.
thank swiy for the advice

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

For what SWIY is telling SWIM thinks that wasn't molly at all, mdma does not fit those symptoms you describe, it sounds more like some other drug, a RC maybe. Too bad SWIY doesn't have more of that molly in order to test it.
Does SMIY remember how the substance looked like? The friends of DF members' friends cannot tell you what it was by the way it looked but maybe they can guess what it wasn't. SWIM is telling SWIY this because two weekends ago someone SWIM knows had a "psychotic attack" (that's how doctors called it) the day after taking some fake molly and had to be taken to the hospital. This sounds very familiar.

Anyway, the substance is now gone so SWIY has to focus now in going back to normal. As SWIosnappo said, the substance may have triggered some underlying psychologic problem that was waiting to come out. Or maybe SWIY got too scared from the experience and now is suffering all the tension that it caused.

SWIM thinks that taking sleeping pills is not a good idea, solving chemical-related problems adding other chemicals to the equation will probably make SWIY's problem worse. If SWIY really needs some external help to get asleep, and if he/she is a marijuana user, maybe smoking some pot at bedtime will help SWIY sleep, at least it's natural and it works quite well for SWIM. Of course, if SWIY does not use marijuana, starting to use it just to get asleep would make no sense. Looking for professional help would be good too, maybe a psychologist will be better than a psychiatrist as a first step. Also relaxing a little bit and doing activities that SWIY enjoy will get him distracted and relieve anxiety.

Sounds like nystagmus to me, a classic effect of high dose MDMA.

Anyway, we are not in a position to ID the drug over the interent, it's just not possible so the best advice we can give is it to seek further medical assistance.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

Thanks for the replies everyone, just talking about this is making it a bit easier to recover. And to craig88- what substance and how much of it did swiy ingest? And were the effects practically unbearable? ie. was swiy able to go to work and continue normal function? For the first week swim was unable to work, or do practically anything. The prescribed Ativan was the only thing that got me back to semi normal for the two weeks that swim was taking it. After running out of the Ativan symptoms returned, but after a day of being back on Ativan, and a good nights rest (10 hours) swim is feeling pretty good. Although swim has still made an appointment to see a mental health professional.

Hie,
I agree with platitude, taking sleeping pills is not really a good idea. I personally experienced a few hours lost before but never had difficulties after that. It just i'm having trouble to remember what exactly happens.. no matter how hard i try to recall it just won't come back. Pounding heart upon walking most probably cause by heavy smoking habits or blood circulation. Does SWIM smokes?

Smoking pot can help SWIM sleeping problem. I don't really like smoking pot as it makes me paranoid and shivering. But it does really helps my sleeping problems.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

My recommendation to SWIY would be to stay away from all chemicals for a while and try to work with the problems you are facing. As someone posted, it must indeed be an underlying psychological problem. SWIM experienced such feelings as you described after taking X and drinking at a tiesto concert. After SWIM got home and knocked out, he wokeup later with the worst panic attack which contintued throught the whole day, gradually lessening. My advice to SWIY would be to try to take a suggested dose of 5-htp and possibly seeing a psychologist if the symptoms do not go away

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

Thanks for the replies. Swim does smoke cigarettes again after having quit for 6 months. Swim started again after the episode described above. Swim appreciates the advice about marijuana as Swim had smoked it daily for over 10 years. The problem is that Swim stopped smoking marijuana for about 1 month before the episode began, and hasn't smoked since. Swim did try to take a hit or two in order to improve conditions, yet it only made the anxiety and paranoia worse. Swim would like to reiterate that Swim has made an appointment to see a mental health specialist, although is nervous about taking psychiatric medications. Swim was prescribed Seroquel XR yesterday, but has not taken it. Swim was too worried about side effects especially since the medication was prescribed for an off label symptom (insomnia). Swim knows that regular Seroquel can help with sleep, but Seroquel XR seems to be a different story. Any advice about Seroquel XR would be appreciated.

Re: A month after an ecstasy overdose. HELP!

Hmm... well i don't have much to say, but to the people that are saying they don't think it was actually mollly, I would disagree. 1000mg of mdma is a LOT for 1 night, especially if it was snorted. Plus, alcohol was added, never a good combo.
