Spuiten & Slikken
Dutch TV Host to Take Heroin On-Air
21-09-2005 By TOBY STERLING Associated Press Writer AMSTERDAM, Netherlands The host of a new Dutch talk show plans to take heroin and other illegal drugs on air in a program intended to reach young audiences on topics that touch their lives, producers said Wednesday. The show, scheduled to premier on late-night television Oct. 10, is called "Spuiten & Slikken," or the "Shoot Up and Swallow" show. Even in the liberal Netherlands, where marijuana is sold and used openly, the proposed action by presenter Filemon Wesselink is illegal, and the idea was met with dismay by the ruling center-right Christian Democrat party. "This is dangerous, and it sets a bad example," said party spokesman Pieter Heerma. "We're going to ask the Justice Minister for his view on what the law says about this, and his view on the dangers and risks involved." Justice Ministry spokesman Ivo Hommes said it wasn't immediately clear whether Wesselink would be prosecuted: possession of any amount of heroin is illegal but in practice police usually don't have resources to chase after people with less than a half a gram. "The actual taking of drugs is a health problem, not a criminal act, though it's obviously hard to take drugs without possessing them first," Hommes said. "In any case it's not something we endorse, and doing it on television is undesirable." The Shoot Up & Swallow show's main hostess will interview guests about drug use and abuse, while Wesselink and another presenter will carry out in-the-field experiments with sex and drugs. Wesselink, 26, plans to ingest heroin in the form of a pill, said Ingrid Timmer, a spokeswoman for the show's producer BNN. "It's not our intention to create an outcry. We just want to talk about subjects that are part of young people's lives," Timmer said. In other segments of the show, Wesselink plans to go on a drinking binge in a series of pubs. He also will try LSD _ on his couch under the supervision of his mother. The Netherlands is known for its marijuana policy, where sale and use of the drug in small quantities are not prosecuted even though technically illegal. Other drugs, including LSD, cocaine, Ecstasy and heroin are outlawed and dealers are prosecuted. The legal age for the consumption of alcohol and tobacco is 16. According to information from the Netherlands' Trimbos Institute, which monitors drug use, the Dutch are in the middle of international norms for drug use. The institute says 6 percent of Dutch have used marijuana recently, compared with 8 percent in the United States, 9 percent in Britain and 9 percent in France. For cocaine, it was 1.1 percent in Holland _ and rising quickly _ compared to 1.3 percent in the U.S., 1.5. percent in Britain and 0.3 percent in France. Comparable data for heroin use were not available. BNN has drawn viewer complaints for programs in the past, including a sex education program called "This Is How You Screw." One segment discussed how to have sex in a nightclub and featured life-size mannequins with sex organs. Last month, the Dutch show "Big Brother," made by a different producer, included a pregnant woman in its cast, raising the possibility she would give birth on TV. The Dutch Labor ministry ruled the woman, known as Tanja, would not be allowed to give birth on camera but the newborn could appear on the program for several hours. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/09/21/D8COLIUG1.html Last edited by ~lostgurl~; 18-08-2007 at 13:47. SO, nothing new or spectacular on TV again. It is the TV version of the Dope Show, which ran on radio. It is good however for the further acceptence of responsible drug use. BTW: nobody here takes our governemnt serious (as far as I know). Especially not the right wing Christian Democrat party.

Well the host says it's intended to reach young audiences, but what exactly is the purpose or message? Is he saying it is ok to use heroin, or is he highlighting the dangers of the drug? I hope that the host is not showing the pleasurable experience without highlighting the whole experience... There needs to be alot of emphasis in the dangers, withdrawls, dependence, and so on. If this guy is out to show the whole picture, than I think it maybe ok. This needs to be a thing about education, not entertainment.Edited by: sands of time

Like all news, it this article emphazises a detail so it becomes the main subject. The program is not about heroin. It is about sex & drugs, all drugs including alcohol. One of the presentors will go on a alcohol binge to see what the effects of this are. Alcohol is a much larger problem in the Netherlands than other drugs. IMO the purpose of the program is to be sensational. But the official purpose is to show a realistic view on drugs(in contrary to propaganda or taboo censured programs), showing the risks of drug use. The part of the program about sex is just as practical in approach: the presentor of that part of the show will experiment with many different sexual acts, like acrobatic sex, comparing blow jobs from male and female, etc. Although I do not think programs like this are very good, they do break down years of drug propaganda in minutes and show a far morerealistic picture of drugs. If you like you can ask yourfavorite TV station to run the program as well. It will certainly draw a lot of viewers. See: www.bnn.nl |

Interesting.. there was much softer version of this kind of program here in Finland earlier this year. It was about two travellers going around the world and trying out different psychoactives on their way (weed of course, coke, booze & others). Drugs were definitely not the focus, different cultures were, but the drugs scene raised quite much opposition from the public along with eating dogs and such. I was rather surprised it was aired though, showing open drug use without megalomanic demonizing. In northern europe it is still a taboo. Hopefully these kind of programs break the taboo and make a reasonable argumentation possible. In Finland, reasoning on drug policies have not been possible so far, so this is one of the things that might open our political debate on drugs.

The program can be watched online, but you need to become a member of the television network to log in and view it. Last edited by Alfa; 18-04-2006 at 00:19. |

You should see this weeks episode about shrooms. It is amazing. They are 100% positive about shrooms. So positive that viewers started to call about their negative experiences. It's like an 1.5 hour add for shrooms including a trip documentary.

The current episode was amazing. It was about crack, blow jobs and making ice-o-lator hashish. It showed step by step how to make this great hash. It's very simple. I expect all hell to break lose, with this broadcast. Our Justice minister may be a little enflamed ATM. lol. I am really appreciating this weekly show, which has now been running for 6 months. The show is so popular, that for the moment their site is actually down to an overkill of visitors. (broadcast just ended)

Whoa, taking heroin is... more hardcore than even I had expected, even though it's in pill form. It'll probably be the medical grade stuff since it's in a pill, right?
The article in the original post was less preachy or "biased-against" than I expected. I'm glad the journalist pointed out that "the Dutch are in the middle of international norms for drug use." Quote:

The travelling program(Madventures) really amazed me to. It was something completely new in finnish tv. I heard they are/were debating about the episode which would contain cannibalism.
Well, thanks for the internet, the free information about drugs is spreading fast. |

this must be ritualised anthropophagy, were people consume ashes or body parts of the deceased as part of the funeral tradition, right ? Eating people for food is rare, though it does happen, like in that airline crash in the Andes where survivors ate the bodies of the dead to survive, or extreme cases of famine, it has been mentioned about north korea and some african countries for instance. b |

That sounds interesting Psyche. Please tell more about Madventures. Do they also take drugs in the show? If yes, are there English subtitles and online streams?

Madventures isn't a normal travelling program wich would show the masstourism targets. They aren't travelling just to see how warm is the water in the hotels pool. Instead they're introducing different cultures, and usually their most radical aspects and customs. That often includes drugs, and always exotic, purposely extremely disgusting foods. Always they attend to some partys and test every radically different thing whenever possible.
Yes, they've smoked for example weed on tv in Jamaica. But they have some kind of diclaimer too, saying something like 'but as weed is illegal in Jamaica, we do not smoke it, but instead this unspecified herb that much resembles it' so that everyone knows whats actually in their joint. About the cannibalism I don't know more, but yes, I really think it's involved in some ritual event. This cannibalism is quite hearsay, but I think they are having a debate wheter or not to allow showing that kind of material on tv. I haven't been watching Madventures a lot, but I was going to head my way to torrentz.com.(is that sources discussion ) I think there's no subtitles at the moment, too shame. I've heard many would like to have english subtitles and really hope they will make them.Heres a link to a (short) introduction in the IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369131/ |
