The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

SWIM would like to share a documentary with the rest of you. She saw it before she even tried heroin, when her and her ex (who was using and introduced her to h) first started dating she showed it to him and he loved it. Very beautiful photographs and haunting music. Here is what it's about:

In 2004, anywhere from 20 to 30 young addicts lived on the ninth floor of an elegant narrow building overlooking Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The squatters had turned the sprawling apartment into a dark, desperate and chaotic place.

People hustled, scored, shot and smoked wherever they could. Friends conned each other for their next hit. They slept on piles of clothes on the floor. The power was shut off; the bathroom unusable; the kitchen filled with garbage. Anything of value was sold off.

For nearly three years, Jessica Dimmock followed this crew documenting what happened to them after eviction, how they fought to get clean, sank deeper into addiction, went to jail, started families and struggled to survive.

Enjoy

Re: The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

SWIM finds it extremely humorous how horrible things like that look to people on the outside. It looks like the worst, most awful living hell you can imagine to them. But when your on heroin, it feels as normal as the life of a 9-5 simp. Shit, feels a hell of a lot better than that actually. Of course when you can't afford it anymore, it actually is that.

SWIM agrees with that. She remembers being so shocked and nearly repulsed when she first watched it. Now it just makes her crave, and appreciate that she never got to that level. But at the same time she feels like even if she ever does, she can still rise above that, thanks to Dionn and Rachel's story.

Swim was thinking the same thing, could the OP answer this question?

Is the full documentary itself primarily a sequence of, (pretty beautiful) photographs, or is it an actual video, of the more conventional documentary style?

Also, are there any links to the whole thing? (swim may well have missed something obvious here............)

Re: The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

Swim found it very interesting and knowing people that are like that squatting and just trying to make there hustle, even swim being an addict it makes him even look at himself and try to not make the same mistakes.

Swim just doesnt like how non addicts view things like this as like this is who they are just junkies and not the fact that they were once a kid and then a person just like everyone else and are just trying to make shit work.

A very powerful video and good for showing the extremes of heroin addiction and the daily struggle.

From a non addicts view that place looks filthy (Garbage full up in the kitchen/used rigs everywhere etc) would swim not agree?

That sort of place is a stereotypical junkie lair.

Re: The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

Yes that is true but its not like they want to live there and being swallowed up by addiction and trying to survive the options one has once past a certain point is almost take what you can get. Swim is just saying he feels for them and feels people judge to harshly that's all.

Well, SWIM found out about Jessica Dimmock because of SWIM's former best friend. SWIM's former best friend was currently attending college at the time and Jessica Dimmock came as a guest speaker.

SWIM is pretty sure she heard from her former friend that Jessica Dimmock started this project because she struck up a conversation with one of the junkies while photographing at a park, who invited her to the apartment.

SWIM would have to assume that Jessica Dimmock follows the lives of several junkies and it would only make sense that she covers and goes more in depth in the book.

Following the link SWIM posted SWIY should see the links to the side under the video, about buying the DVD and then buying the book. SWIM recommends SWIY follows these links if they are interested.

Glad everyone seems to have enjoyed the video

Swim couldn't agree more, in the eyes of the general public, you could have been the sweetest, most well-behaved, helpful, talented person, but if you make that one mistake and fall into addiction suddenly all of that gets forgotten, and you are now simply a 1-dimensional 'junkie'.

That really does swim's nut!
Especially when he get's talked down to by keyworkers etc. who clearly know far less than swimself about the whole topic and are in general just more stupid than swim.......(don't want to sound big-headed, but it really is true alot of the time)...........but of course none of that matters because now swim is a junkie, and junkies are all the same.

Yeah swims mom thought a long time ago talking to a therapist would help in swims addiction problem but the whole time the therapist just talked down to swim and acted like he was a plague which basically didn't help at all and didn't even see swim for anything else.

Re: The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

It's true what people have been saying, about how videos like this can really shock those who have not lived it. But when it doesn't shock, because you have lived it (or are living it); it's sad. Swim wishes she was appalled by that clip, but the number of times she been sat there, like that girl at the beginning, struggling to get a hit, getting more and more worked up, with blood pouring down her arms... it doesn't bear thinking about. I suppose if she had stepped back, and been shown a picture of herself looking like that, she might have been shocked. But all she was concerned with was getting her dig, and getting well.

Anyway, an interesting link, thanks.

Yeah, and unlike (swims experience) of the UK scene, they're all so much younger than most addicts.
Swim rarely meets addicts his age, most of the addicts he knows are 30-60. Swim's only met one addict younger than him in the 4 years he's been scoring/hooked. Yet in that flick, they're all pretty much his age.

Guess it's just changing drug trends.

Re: The Ninth Floor, Documentary about Heroin Addicts

Theres an interesting Heroin addiction documentary that takes place in Russia called Invisible, by Konstantin Bojanov. Its a pretty cool perspective on addiction halfway across the world from the US. Its crazy all the similarities and differences that go along with the addiction of the same exact substance...a must watch. Ill check out the documentary you had mentioned, thanks for pointing it out.
