How to address a runny nose?

Howdy d-f, thought a light-hearted (though still personally important!) thread might be a nice way to pop the cherry.

So SWIM recently became involved with this wonderful stuff called methamphetamine! However, every time the guy does the stuff he gets the most irritating, insistent runny nose. SWIM is wondering if any SWIYs out there might know a trick or two to deal with that. SWIM just hates that raw feeling the poor nose gets from constantly wiping and blowing it.

Additional information: the product has been injected, so no direct sinus contact. SWIM has been doing this with friends in a cigarette-smoking household, to which SWIM is unaccustomed, so there's some additional irritation at work.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Re: How to address a runny nose?

You know, that's a really interesting aspect of meth use now that SWIm thinks of it. because, typically, the precursors of meth, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, are agents used to dry up running noses. Yet a runny nose is symptomatic of methamphetamine use.

SWIM isn't and has never used meth. When does the issue with runny nose occur? During use or after when one is coming down and ensuing intervals? If the later, SWIM would think a dose of Sudafed or other ephedrine or "drying" cough syrup would do. If during, then she's going to need to look into the mechanism behind the phenomena a bit more.

SWIM had the same thought haha!

To answer the question though, it seems to appear after the peak but still buzzing, a bit after sunrise, and clears up pretty well around nightfall. Many factors at work here...

Now regarding taking an antihistamine, SWIM has come across something interesting that he unfortunately doesn't really understand...

From PubMed:
"Several studies have demonstrated that first generation antihistamines potentiate methamphetamine-induced psychomotor activation"

What is psychomotor activation? Is this good? Is this bad? *shrug*

Re: How to address a runny nose?

Psychomotor activation is merely the onset of mental changes which in turn effect ones activity(how they behave and what the do while under that influence). Typically with amphetamines that would refer to such things as increased speed of speech, increased activity, racing thoughts, ect.

SWIM read something recently and would be interested in having a few of DF's meth users tell her if it's effective or not. SWIM read that consuming a Mountain Dew approximately three hours prior to 'come down" can aid greatly in the transition--but that's likely for the caffeine and could be replaced with a small oral dose of caffeine itself. It can from a fairly reliable source; however, didnt really have any--what SWIM would call--valid empirical data to back the assertion up. SWIM finds it interesting none-the-less.

Also, perhaps trying one of the newer generation antihistamines, as they tend to be rather drying, might help. Cetirizine (Zyrtec) and Desloratadine (Clarinex) are two possible choices most docs won't baulk in prescribing to those with troublesome allergies of any sort.

Good info, thanks!

Re: How to address a runny nose?

Awesome, thanks for explaining psychomotor activation! It's odd that a definition was so elusive on google...

And thanks also for the suggestion of these other antihistamines. Next time, SWIM will give one of those a go and will report the results.

Regarding the Mountain Dew, this isn't something that the cat has ever heard of. Certainly an interesting idea though, if it's effective! SWIM has never had any problems with come-down, so wouldn't be able to test it. It looks like there aren't any threads right now looking at caffeine + come-down, so maybe a new thread?

Re: How to address a runny nose?

SWIM also has the same problem with the runny nose. SWIM only smokes it. Upon taking the first hit, SWIMs nose starts running like crazy. SWIM also has allergies and sinus problems and does not take anything for it. But smoking makes it 100 times worse and SWIMs nose never stops running. SWIM has tried prescription nose sprays from the doctor but none seem to help the runny nose. No one has any answers that they know actually work?
