Noise
Anyone else into noise(noise rock, noise music, noisecore, etc)? Just discovered this genre of music this year, saw a few good shows in Philly (Nautical Almanac in particular).
It's hard to describe what it sounds like. Picture ambient electronica, right? The goal of ambient music (and space rock too) is to create music landscapes using space. Emptiness. Ambience. Well, noise is sort of the opposite. Noise is just that (noisy) if you're new or unused to it. Overdriven harsh feedback, overwhelming white noise, grating hisses, beeps, whirs, sirens. You'd think it sucks, but it's actually really cool to dissect the layers, and it's really fun to listen to on most drugs. It's rhythmless, with no real melodies. Some noise groups or groups influenced by noise are Melted Banana, Orgy of Noise, Anal Cunt, Thunderbolt, Sonic Youth, Nautical Almanac, and many electronica groups. Instruments consist of old electronic toys rewired with new switches ("bent toys"), things made out of old machinery, reel-to-reel, and all manner of guitar effects that are looped together and overdriven and melted. Cool stuff man, check it out. Last edited by ~lostgurl~; 18-08-2007 at 15:59. Reason: removing coding |

That's the thing though, because it's an entirely different form of
music, you can't really compare it to other genres you like. I happen to really enjoy space rock (just got a Spacemen 3 album today, actually) and ambient. And industrial, drum n bass, house, trance, psych rock, jam rock, folk, old country, band jazz, house jazz, acid jazz, classical, indy, alternative, ska, reggae, shoegazing, stoner rock, metal, funk, punk, classic rock, prog rock, kraut rock, electronica, hiphop, triphop, and rap. And that's just off the top of my head... Anyway, this doesn't distract me from my interest in noise. I enjoy noise not just because of what it sounds like (you can only listen to screeching feedback and distortion for so long), but what it embodies. And seeing this shit live in action is completely different than on a computer...just the emotions that these people pour into shitty broken down electronic equipment is amazing. Pinkavvy, got any samples of Phantom Load that I can hear? |
