Does opium go bad after too long? opium from 1900...

Swim knows this seems like a bit of an odd question.

One of his friend's great great grandparents or something was a turn of the century doctor and so they have a lot of antique jars of various medicines most of which are no longer used due to improvements in medical technology. one of these jars is quite interesting however... its a jar about the size of two coke cans and its filled with powdered opium... it was even labeled as such until recently when his parents decided to remove the label due to having a large amount of people coming over and not wanting to cause a stir.

so seeing as how this is opium literally from 1900 swim is just curious as to whether its still useable. he has no plans to that extent but he and his friend have been curious for a while. its a kind of cool decoration and swim wonders whether his friends parents could actually get in trouble for it. not that they would as they have a damn good explanation, but you know, curiosity. If it helps, the jar is glass and has a cork top to seal it. swim doubts that its entirely air tight, but would imagine its a decent seal.

Edit: didnt think about that... sorry. obviously was not the intent but swim doesnt want to break the rules.

I pretty sure morphine does not degrade with exposure to oxygen, but the light may be damaging. I may be wrong but I imagine it has very little potency left.

also, this may be extremely hard to know, but if its assumed that the jar holds about thirty fl oz and the opium is in a powdered form, any guess as to how much its worth as a drug rather than an antique? wide ranging guesses are ok... $10? $200? $1000? swim really has no clue how much opium goes for.
Btw this is price discussion and is not allowed...

I would think the value of an antique medicine bottle should be open for discussion, the drug only has value because it isn't to be consumed. Of course that then opens the door on a very slippery slope that's probably not worth going down.

Empty pharmacutical bottles aren't that valuable, 10-20 bucks. Never seen one full, though I suspect there's collectors who would pay a pretty penny for one, sales might be difficult, but not impossible.

Does it have an imprint ID'ing is as an opium bottle?

You have some looser parents. That's such a cool thing and they totally wrecked it. You don't take labels off of antiques.

Re: Does opium go bad after too long? opium from 1900...

to be honest, swim and his friend only assume that the label was taken off. the reason for this is that swim's friend showed it to him once when it had the label, but a few months later when they checked back they didn't see it. there are multiple bottles of various white powder, some of which are missing their labels, so they assumed that the label must have been removed rather than the bottle being hidden completely. swim agrees that leaving the label on would have been much cooler. of course the actual value of these bottles, although interesting, is ultimately trivial as they're never going to be sold. so, whether the label changed the value or not probably doesn't matter to them. swim is sure they have the label lying around somewhere and would imagine that it could probably be put back on if it came off so easily. the bottles themselves don't have any imprints on them unfortunately as they're just generic glass bottles.

And for this reason it would be very, very risky to try and consume any of it - what if you are mistaken in your assumption, and the unlabelled bottle you thought contained opium actually contains something like, say, sodium cyanide (another white powder)? Not worth the risk, methinks...

Swim has absolutely no intention of using it. he assures you its just curiosity. he stays away from non psychedelics anyway and wouldn't trust any 100 year old chemical to do anything but kill him. he just wanted to know if people thought it might still be potent. as its not, its probably for the best as far as swim's friend's parents are concerned because having a jar of potent opium lying around could cause legal trouble.
