How does alcohol compare to opiates?

Right now I'm experiencing a nice buzz. Not too drunk, but not too
sober either. I feel lightheaded, a little dizzy, and kinda warm. This
feels alot like the time I took about 5 hydrocodone pills. My question
is, how does the drunken feeling compare to the opiate high? I'm not
talking heroin here, but if they're similar, than why would anyone risk
jail or death to get their hands on illegal stuff when alcohol can
produce very similar effects? I ask this because I'd like to try some H
sometime in the future.

Oh, and if this has been posted before, sorry.
