So who has come up with a good long term storage method? Given that this new plant will likely not remain available forever, and home growing is not possible unless you live in the tropics with lots of land, what is the best long term storage method for dry plant material? SWIM left a bag out out and noticed that the premium leaf powder has lost some (though only about 30% or so)of its potency over the last 4-5 months. SWIM was considering vaccuum packing, freezing with surrounding drying agent (ie - rice). SWIM is a little worried about the moisure in a freezer, however, since some reports indicate the potential to mold.
Does anyone know if such storage precautions would even impede decomposition of actives ? SWIM will store small amounts of equivalent material with different methods, and report back later on....
As long as your packaging material is thick enough and the contents is real dry, you should not have to worry about mold. Adding some silicone packs may be a good idea. I would place my bets on the fridge storage. Maybe making little packs, so that if you want to use some kratom, you do not need to open everything up.
I suppose the ideal method would be to vacuum pack it and refrigerate it, but not everyone has the equipment or space.
So long as it is kept somewhere dark and cool the leaf should not degrade to much. Swim would suggest packing it into zip-Lock bags and trying to remove as much air from each bag before putting all he bags into a cardboard box or a storage container that could be put into a dark, cool place.
If Swim had that much kratom he would set about grinding it, this would reduce the overall size and make for easier storage.
If Swiy is really stuck for room Swim would be more than happy to let them store some in his place
Just wondering. SWIM has just ordered quite a bit, which he believes will last him a few months. It was in the form of samples of three strains. As with most herbs, medicinals, pharmaceuticals, SWIM is wondering if he should be looking for fresher leaf if he is going to order enough to last a few months.
How long has SWIY kept powdered leaf around, and did it lose its effect?
Would it be smart for SWIM to take a portion of the plant matter, bag it up, stick it in some tupperware and store it in the freezer?
Thanks! SWIM believes this will be his last question for a while - he doesn't want the forums spammed with his newbie innocence.
Keep it away from air, moisture, heat, and light. Storing it in the freezer could be a bad idea. Condensation formed from taking it out and thawing it could cause some degradation. I've never heard of kratom being difficult to store for prolonged periods of time. Swim has kept kratom for months with no loss in taste, but can't comment much on potency, not enough experience.
Swim keeps his in sealed ziploc baggies with all the air squeezed out (not vaccumed, just by hand), and inside of an airtight container in a cool, dry place. He has no problems with it going bad or losing potency.
I heard about a little mouse who was storing his kratom in an open bag inside of his closet, about 40 days or so I think.
I heard he was thinking his kratom got too much bitter both in taste and smell and a strong 'faint effect' now seems to be an 'extra feature'. Could this poor mouse have lost his whole kratom reserve because of mould? Can this mouse still get some use of his stock (tea, resine or something else)?
I have not seen many issues with kratom losing its potency. Keep it in a sealed, dry container in a consistent temperature and out of the light. I have played around with kratom quite a bit and have had no issues with it losing potency, nor have I heard about this problem from anyone I know.
