Patient Administered Secret?

My friend was in the hospital last week to have a cyst removed from her ovary. They gave her a morphine pump (pathient administered kind). She had a really strange reaction...She still had great pain, hallucinations, urestlessness, black outs, saying "out of the way" things to people...you get the drift....
After they took her off the pump, she realized she had a rash and was itching all over. Someone had told her mother that she was having withdrawals, but she was not withdrawing from anything physically...no physical withdrawal symptoms, in other words. When expaining how the morphine didin't help the pain and caused the weird sysptoms, one of the doctors said "maybe she needed more" in a very sarcastic mannor, as if there was no doubt that she was a drug addict.

Is there someway to tell by a reaction of the sort she had that she might have recently been doing some sort of drugs? My initial thought was that it was an allergy....but if so, shouldn't the hospital staff have noticed signs? Does anyone out there know anything about this kind of phenomenon? Thanks for any input....

Re: Patient Administered Secret?

The rash sounds like a histamine release, also the itching all over can be caused by many opiates including morphine...........
Taking Benedril can help to control these symptoms, talk to the doctor some more he/she can explain this reaction.
These symptoms seem more common with morphine than other opiates, but that is just swims obsevation.........the rash and itching is a common side effect.
Hope this helps a little...........stay safe........ bige

Thanks. The docs and nurses didn't think there was a problem...that was the problem. I tried to tell them it had this unusual reaction, but they did not believe me.
