I'm having a hard time finding info on shrooms that grow in Kansas.

I know we have lots of them but I can't find any pictures & information on identifying them. Help?

Question Need ID Help - Nova Scotia

Hello,

SWIM picked these today in Nova Scotia in the grass at the base of a Larch Pine in some wooded area near Halifax. SWIM then took some pics which came to me and I share with you now.

http://new.photos.yahoo.com/album?c=...728200&.src=ph

(click on each photo to get a good view)
These look like Libs in almost every way except: they are very soft to the touch and disintegrate if you squeeze them, and their gills are not blue/brown. The gills are white.

Are they Liberty Caps?

Re: Mushroom Hunting

For mushrooms in general that grow in the USA, I can suggest two good field guides. One is the Audubon Society field guide to mushrooms. The other is Mushrooms of North America by Orson K. Miller, Jr.

Regards a field guide to psilocybe sp. in Kansas, I'd say you are in a good position to write one - once you develop expertise in mycological taxonomy. Give it a few years of serious research.

Maybe someone can engage in an enlightment episode by informing SWIM about 'shrooms in Panama City, Rep. of Panama... I'm sure that the variety is staggering but SWIM has only been there for 4 months...

Re: Mushroom Hunting

If SWIM may ask, what is the ideal tempature for fruiting to happen naturally? SWIM lives in Nebraska, and the tempature hasn't yet gone over 65*f. It's been raining recently and SWIM is wanting to get to his first year of hunting. He just wants to know if he is going to be running around cow fields late at night for no reason...

Re: Mushroom Hunting

A lot of usefull infomation here!....but a couple of questions I hope can be answered.

Should any of the following variables be taken to account or any good signs for locations:

-I read that cows help spread the mycelium, is this also true for sheep?Which is better; land used for sheep grazing or cows or both?

-Do mushrooms prefer the flats or hills, if so how high? Do they prefer flat high land or do they like the slopes(eg; hillsides or hilltops)?

-If they prefer slopes, what slopes? north, east, south, west facing?

-Whats the best time of day to spot them? I read somewhere that mornings are better as the moisture is still on the ground is this correct.

-Woodlands? to avoid, but avoid by how much, are fields bordering woodland suitable or is it a case of the further away the better.

-Any other wildlife that may indicate a suitable habitat, what else could be looked for except mushrooms(plants, animals, insects etc..)?

Any advice on the above questions greatly appreciated.

Regards
Bananas

Re: Mushroom Hunting

Are there any signs that means it is a "shroom" for certain? also is it possible that these are no where near a cow field?

Re: Mushroom Hunting

Listen up: You can't learn to identify/find/not kill yourself off the internet regards mushrooms. You need to take the time to study. Read books. Join a local mycology club. Take a course at a college. Learn from an experienced person who will take you under his wing.

Mushrooms can be identified, but not with a few words/photos on the web. Anyone tells you otherwise is a fool.

Re: Mushroom Hunting

Because indoor P. Cubensis are clones from a particular strain. Outdoor one's have many relatives to play with.

SWIM has not seen any reports on psilocybe cyanescens being in their area, but SWIM has picked eaten and tripped on cyanescens picked fresh from northern WV. May want to add that to the WV list.

this is also great for familiarizing yourself with the different strains, so you dont get ripped off. it took swim 3 seconds to find the mushrooms he just got, and turn out swim wasnt ripped at all.
