Making a bamboo bong

I plan to make a bong out of bamboo and need some guidance on this.
What kind of sealant should be used (I read somewhere that silicone cannot withstand head enough)? What can prevent the bamboo from cracking (possibly polyurethane)? Any other comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Will post pics once this project is complete!
