SWIM has used many upon many of chillums for cannabis smoking... He has used a few glass... Clay... Metal... But never wood though they do exist... He finds a chillum just pure fun for cannabis... Not something done everyday... Only on special occasions when he needs to get a quick mellow smoke... Some people don't know what a chillum is... So... Let's inform them... Shall we?





The Chillum is a kind of narrow funnel made of clay and other materials... The funnel can only be used for smoking when it has a filter stone inside it or the smoking substance will fall right into your mouth... To avoid burning your hands the Chillum is being smoked through a cloth.


Originally the Chillum was made from fired clay but they also exist in wood, stone and glass... It is thought to originate in India, although they were also found in South America... The Chillum is special as its origin is purely spiritual... The holy men from India, the Sadhu (Hindu Priests), have been smoking their Chillums for thousands of years... Smoking a Chillum for a Sadhu is like drinking red wine for a catholic priest. In the sixties the Chillum started being used in Europe and America by the Hippie movement.


Smoking small Chillums brings hot smoke directly into your throat. The larger the pipe, the colder the smoke gets, and the more smoke you'll get in your lungs. The more smoke you'll get, the more of off your head you'll get... For a more mellow smoke, pick a smaller one. Smoking a Chillum is always better than smoking a joint or cigarette... Very cool tool... Heres a few pics just to give everyone a better view...

These are the stones I mentioned earlier that are placed into the chillum... SWIM finds them very cool for quick/relaxing jointless smoking on the move. Chillums rock... They are sort of a cross breed between a joint... And a pipe... But not one of the two... Cheers .Edited by: AcmeSewageCo

i used my glass chillium every day. i have a paper towl filter waded up in a ball to act as a filter it works good and collects alot of rezin. it is pretty concerstive. have to change the filter when it gets all clogged full of rezin and it hits smooother.

Old topic SWIM knows but he loves to smoke the occasional Chillumn. He remembers the time a mate brought one back from India, SWIM had never seen or heard of one before.

SWIM learned just how well they work about ten minutes later. haha

Just avoid chillums made out of wood. Nasty taste. Stone are the best.

I think clay is better, but they are both better than wood.
The trick is to clean it properly after every smoke. This makes it absorb less of the tarry goo and keeps the taste fresh.
Swims chillum is 4 years old and has been through a lot of heavy smoke, when you look throug it its still very clean and shiny. The clay has gone from a desert like colour to a deep red. Beautiful.

There are some good producers of clay chillums, Alvaman being the most legendary perhaps, but I remember seeing som made by another italian, think his name was Andrea(s), they were completely white with tribal "tattoos" on them.
Does anyone have any of these? Maybe post some pics?

BTW. These chillums are very good for smoking creme charas.

some tip swim learned in india : buy some beedies ( indian tobacco rolled in eucalyptus leaves), open one and discard the tobacco, then crumble the dry eucalyptus leaf wrapping and mix it with what ever one is smoking.
cools down the harsh smoke very well.
also, the smoking end of a chillum is often wrapped in a safi, the very light indian scarves, then end being covered by one or two layers. Filters a little, or is supposed. don't use one's best safi as this will leave skidmarks.
oh, and before you inhale, praise shiva and end with "Bom shankar", of course

Must be a weak chillum, the ones SWIM seen and has used are tough ones, would be hard to break from just falling

Swim finds this is generally the case with any delicate smoking utensil, they really do leap.

A chillum is the best way to smoke hashish.
Clay ones with multi-sided "gittaks" (a clay stone filter/choke), which serve to cool the smoke as it flows down the barrel and a thin cloth to serve as a filter at the bottom is the way to go.

Paper always screws the trip.

SWIM remembers wasting some time with chillum babas in India. One baba said he smoked 40 a day. Beats going to church! Chillums are fun, but why mix hash with tobacco?

maybe because the it would burn more evenly and if the person happens to be a tobacco smoker , two birds with one stone really.

It does help it burn a lot better, it also helps your stash last longer and soothes the harshness of the hash. I'd guess it stems form the traditional use of Kif, crystals mixed with tobacco before the days of commonly pressed hash. Adding tobacco (for some) improves the taste of the hit plus adds that much needed nicotine rush (again only for some). When one smokes a cannabis tobacco mix for a long time then switches to straight cannabis, a lot of the noticable/pleasurable effects can be lost and it doesn't really feel like one is actually getting high, they are (mildly so) it's just a very different high from what they are used to so they usually switch back to the mix. Tobacco addiction, at school the fools thought it was cool to smoke, look at them now polluting their lovely cannabis and bodies with that foul wretched tobacco.

SWIM rarely smokes chillums because they are designed for tobacco and hash. To anyone who has really switched from smoking tobacco/ cannabis to pure cannabis will find the mixture toxic and unpleasant. Just look at the health warnings on the packets!

You can allways grow your own.

I have some friends who use tea, tofu and similar herbs they believe are safer.
Swim smokes tobacco so it's not really a problem for him, but he prefers to heat the cigarette gently to release some of it's aroma which does not mix well with the hash taste.

Swim actually finds that smoking pure cannabis is unpleasant, the hits are too small and it's difficult to get it to burn right.
Maybe SWIE could give some hints on method?

SWIM uses his chillums maximum time he smokes. He also like collecting them. Has some 26 chillums made of different materials like clay, stone, glass, wood, ivory and marble.

He uses different chillums according to the occasion. Clay chillum (black ones with cobra carving on them) is used on a daily basis. Glass chillums when a group of people are smoking together. He doesn't use the wood one because the taste is bad. Ivory is used on very special occasions because it is fucking expensive. Metal ones get heated too fast. Can't smoke more than an hour on them.

SWIM learnt the process of smoking chillum from a 93 year old sadhu (Don't know if thats true but he claims so.) whos been smoking hashish for last 65 years. For smoking a chillum you need an oval stone(ones found on the seashore), a safi (SWIM uses muslin) and faith in Shiva :P. The stone is put in through the wider end and settles down on the narrow end to prevent the falling of hashish. Then the narrow end is covered with 2 layers of clothes and filled with masala(mixture of hasish and MJ/tobacco). Its lighted from the wider and smoked. Do not forget to say 'Boom Shankar' or 'Jai Bholenath' before smoking a chillum

There is an unwritten rule in a chillum that if the chillum lights off in the middle, the unused masala has to be thrown off. Therefore SWIM makes sure that masala is dry enough to light smoothly. So he uses oven dried and grinded marijuana leaves with hashish (smoking hashish alone gets painful). He doesn't like tobacco with hashish.

Billy Smarts has told me about this watery resin. What the hell is that all about? Resin is supposed to be thick and sticky. In the case of a chillum though it could possibly be saliva that causes it, but in a bong bowl, Billy doesn't quite get it. I suppose it could be water shooting up the down pipe.

And yes daisy rocket, KFC really does kick ass. I got a wicked zinger box on the way with popcorn chicken and a mini fillet as well

SWIMs chillum would get alot of resin in it and tend to come out of the hole where you suck from....getting on your clothes is bad...wont come out without doing some major cleaning and scrubbing, SWIMs pants have resin stains from 3 years ago!
