Pharmacology - Morphine and recovering from appendicitis

Should I encourage my Dad to lower as much as possible his morphine intake for pain to recover his g.i. movement , it is 2 day post operation of a ruptured appendicitis. He had ileus (lack of gastrical activity ) for two day prior, then they discovered the appendix problem and operated. Since morphine causes constipation, and he can only take by mouth a little ice, and is very 'gassy'
shouldn't they discontinue? Concerned son.
