Experiences - 4 bowls of salvia 5X later...

This is my first time using it, and I feel nothing. You are supposed to smoke this stuff right? I wasn't sure if it truly was salvia and that the product they sent me was wrong but I looked it up online and it was the real stuff. Any suggestions on why it isn't working?

5x is not very potent at all. SWIM recommends smoking 20x+ for his first time. And it doesn't matter how many bowls SWIM smokes... SWIY gets the same high off one hit than 3 or 4 bowls. SWIM recommends next time taking a HUGEEE rip and holding it in for as long as possible next time

Though 5x isn't the most powerful, it should still work. Load a large enough bowl and you'll still trip balls if you're doing it right. Are you holding the smoke in long enough? Maybe the batch is bunk. An outside possibility could be that you have an unusually high resistance to salvia.

I used to grow my own years ago, and 1x is plenty strong enough - the idea is you don't need as much when you start concentrating it (x5, x10 etc)...you do however need to get a decent lungfull and hold on to it for as long as you are able....then another and repeat until youi aren't even aware you've got lungs or are holding your breath anymore

Make sure your buddy is putting the flame to the pipe at the same as smoking it. It needs to burn at a higher temperature than lets say weed. Or if he isn't, than when inhaling you need to inhale stronger so that the it burns hotter and get the salvia that way.

Another thing your buddy can do, is use mouthwash before smoking it and it'll be more intense.

Oh yeah, 30 secs is very long. Don't need to hold it in for that much, but just make sure the above is followed as well. Like even when SWIM did it in a lousy joint (swim can't roll for crap) he still felt crazy and def. felt it, but he is using 25X. He has tried 10 x before but it still worked.

It seems to be quite common for a first-time user to feel little to no effects from this ally. There are many threads about this subject in the Salvia divinorum sub-forum. It's probably the most-commonly-asked question on that forum. I would recommend looking through a few of them.
