Paraffin wax

What is the best way to melt a block of paraffin wax (without ruining a good pot)? Any ideas?

Re: Paraffin wax

Well, they have those little paraffin heaters (beauty supply - for paraffining your hands and/or feet, mmmm fun), and I don't think they are that expensive.

Re: Paraffin wax

Maybe use a double boiler sort of setup. The glass bowl can then be cleaned using boiling water. SWIM can see no reason why this wouldn't work.

Re: Paraffin wax

Quick and easy solution -- since paraffin melts at a lower temperature than water boils, just use the pot to melt the wax, and when it's time for clean up, boil water in the pot. The wax will melt right off. Pour out water / melted wax, repeat as needed, wash with soap when all the wax is out. :=)

You can also buy a wax warmer, or one of those little electric potpourri warmers for around $5 (US) if you're really worried about messing up a pot.

Re: Paraffin wax

Just to make it clear as to why someone would spend the money getting a wax melting device or a double boiler, when wax starts to boil, it can catch on fire, then you suddenly have a huge pot of fire that can not be put out with water. Repeat DO NOT use WATER to put out a WAX FIRE! Like flaming grease, wax will explode when hit with water, splattering napalm all over you and your kitchen. I've done this at a campfire before (from a far distance with special equipment designed for the purpose) and it was a rather spectacular fireball, had a person been next to it, they would be in SERIOUS trouble.

So don't mess around trying to melt wax in a single pan, not worth the risk, especially when all one needs to make a double boiler is one pot that's bigger then the other.
