Drug info - Can swim randomly take Olanzapine?

Swim has a prescription for Olanzapine 5mg, but he doesnt use it.
He was prescribed it by his doc for "racing thoughts", feelings of "losing control" .

The problem is, Swim is an active person, but Olanzapine FLOORS SWIMS ASS. He just becomes too lazy and lethargic to do anything, like go to the gym.

So the question is, can Swim take Olanzapine "randomly" as in when his symptoms start to arise? ( there are random times when swim is hit with his racing thoughts and feels like losing control, but then the a couple of days later, theyr gone and maybe theyll come back the next day. its very random.. like right now)

Swim advises to talk all medicine as directed by swiy's doctor. Atypical anti-psychotics have serious side effects, and swim wouldn't suggest using the drug in a manner that hasn't been studied.


That said, couldn't swiy talk to swiy's doctor about switching medication to something else? There are several atypical anti-psychotics that aren't so benzo like.

Actually, I'm fairly certain it's been used as needed before. But it would behoove swiy to tell his doctor how much he hates the medication. It may be overkill--has swiy tried talk therapy or meditation to try to control the thoughts? (I'm not some anti-drug Scientologist, believe me--but there are much safer things to try first before antipsychotics.)

Just a thought, instead of "randomly" say "as needed". When I saw the title, I frst thought "Oh god, someone wants to go on a stupid bender"

Chibi is right, there's much less aggressive ways to treat such symptoms, talk to the doctor first and see what you can negotiate. Please come and check back in with us.
