In my opinion, trazodone is a model for a safe, effective sleep-aid since it works on the serotonin that induces natural sleep. The fact that it lacks major abuse potential is sort of cool, because the whole theory behind pharms has to do with selectivity, and trazodone is very selective in which serotonin subtype it is a ligand of. It's a novel sleep-aid, that's for sure.

Trazodone

Hello, SWIMaroo came across some 10mg trazodones. SWIM is curious how good of a drug this is recreationally and what those doses would be without passing the fuzzle out.

~Thanks

Re: Trazodone

SWIM used to take trazodone to help him sleep. Dose started at 20mg but tolerance brought it up to 150mg and at that much you are seriously lagging next morning. I doubt it is possible to use this substance for recreation.

Many people, including SWIM agree that Trazodone has no recreational use, as its only makes you drowsy in a non-pleasant way.

Re: Trazodone

SWIM experienced some weird visual distortions and cognitive alteration in an unpleasant way (negative thoughts, irrational thoughts, etc.) with 100 mg trazadone. Mostly it makes people sleepy though, SWIM had some bizarre dreams with it too, bordering on the nightmare variety. Its been said in this thread already, but in SWIMs opinion, not much recreational value here. Sorry!

Re: Trazodone

Yes, it is usually prescribed as a sleep aid and it is also somewhat of an antidepressant. But again I state it causes impotence and is not woth the trouble of taking for any reason unless your female with a slight dpression/sleep problem.

Re: Trazodone

I have a friend who takes this stuff all the time, he takes it for sleep and sometimes to make school confusing. I'm surprised a doc would prescribe something that can cause impotence to him though. Idiot doctors.

SWIM has 2 pills, do you think it would hurt to try it?

Also I remember reading on the container "trazodone 10 0MG". It looked confusing, I wasn't sure if it was 10mg or 100mg...if anyone knows?

Thanks for the replys

Re: Trazodone

Trazodone hydrochloride is a triazolopyridine derivative designated as 2-[3-[4-(3-chlorophenyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl]-1,2,4-triazo-lo[4,3-a] pyridin-3(2H)-one hydrochloride. It is a novel compound, unrelated to tri or tetracyclics, or the SSRI's.

Where SWIJ is it comes 50, 100, 150 and 300mg tablets.

The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it appears to selectively inhibit serotonin reuptake and potentiate the behavioural changes induced bt serotonin precursors such as 5HTP.

It is well absorbed orally (when taken on an empty stomach). Peak plasma levels occur approx one hour after ingestion.

It is licensed (where SWIJ is) for depression, but is often used off-license for insomnia.

In depression results are said to take at least two weeks (ie: it acts quicker than the traditional SSRI's)., although 25% of people take longer to respond.

Initial doses (for depression) are 150mg daily in divided doses. Max outpatient dosage is 400mg. Up to 600mg daily has been used in psychiatric in-patient settings.

Adverse effects include: akathisia, allergy/anaphylaxis, anemia, chest pain, urinary retention, early menstrual periods, flatulence, hallucinations/delusions, hematuria, hypersalivation, hypomania, impaired speech, impotence, increased appetite, increased (and also decreased) libido, increased urinary frequency, missed periods, muscle twitches, numb-ness, and retrograde ejaculation.

There is a potential for drug interactions when trazodone is given with CY34PA inhibitors (many antifungal and antiviral drugs fall into this category and dramatically increase plasma trazadone levels)). Carbamazepine results in reduced plasma Trazadone levels, and digoxin, warfarin and many antibiotics also interact. It is not known whether there is an MAO interaction.

The oral LD50 is 610 mg/kg in mice, 486 mg/kg in rats, and 560 mg/kg in rabbits.

In overdosage Trazadone can cause the following: Priapism, respiratory arrest, seizures, and ECG changes (including arrhythmias), also coma and vomiting.

One thing to mention, mCPP(meta-chloro-phenyl-piperazine) is one of trazodone's metabolites.
As SWIY might know, mCPP is some nasty stuff, wich is mainly used as a pesticide.

Re: Trazodone

I used to take Trazodone at 300 mg a night for sleep. There is no recreational purpose whatsoever in taking this drug. It will turn you into a zombie; this drug should not be abused.

In addition, this drug did not cause me impotence. This drug gave me erections 24 hours a day. I had to stop taking it because the erections were happening way too often. I told my Dr about this and he said it is a bit of a secret among doctors that prescribing Trazodone for erectile dysfunction works just as well if not better than some of today's drugs.

Re: Trazodone

SWIM was given Trazadone in detox (for opiate addiction), and he had very vivid dreams, and when he tried to wake/get up, his brain was kind of in a twilight state... He couldn't move his body but still was becoming conscious.. He had to wiggle his toe, until he could move his leg, which he eventually kicked off the side of bed, and further slid himself to the floor.. Then he tried to stand and his knees almost buckled.. When he got up, he went out to ask why the nurses were in his room messing with him, which apparently was all part of his vivid, although somewhat lucid dream.. He ended up not sleeping but maybe an hour here or there for the rest of the detox (5 days of detox left after the trazadone experience), because he was too scared to try the stuff again..

Re: Trazodone

If SWIM has found one thing over the years, it's that one man's hellacious experience is another's recreational drug, and vice-versa. Maybe there are a few exceptions (antipsychotic tranqs come to mind) but not many.

SWIY should just try it once or twice and decide for themselves... that will settle the issue.

Re: Trazodone

Bongo tried trazadone ONCE when he had severe insomnia. When he needed to pee, he stood up and walked to his toilet. He had a rush of pure horror and fear. Then he peed.

The next day Bongo felt like someone had sawed his brain in half with a dull knife. He said it was awful. Bongo never went near it again.

If you're into S&M with drugs - you'd LOVE trazadone!

Trazadone and visual chaos

Last summer Swim was prescribed Traz for sleep disorder (depression related).... Two days after begining his doses, Swim found that if he had taken the Traz within a couple of hours of also taking his Tramadol (dislocated shoulder) he experienced flashing light effects/strobing whenever he turned his head... Also noted mild problem walking in general.... What say the crew as to the reason for the visual abnormalities?????

Re: Trazadone and visual chaos

I can't say what causes it, but I just wanted to add that swim has noticed weird visual effects after taking trazadone as well. She sometimes takes it for sleep and has often noticed weird effects the next day such as seeing a lot of "floaters" on her eye and and seeing lights in her peripheral vision.

Nefazodone is a drug similar to trazodone and I found this article which is a bit worrisome:

Quote:
A 35-year-old woman who reported persistent significant vision loss for 3 years after taking the antidepressant nefazodone was referred for electrophysiological assessment of vision. The vision changes included reduced acuities, reduced colour vision and visual field constriction in both eyes and were thought to be associated with the use of nefazodone for 6 – 8 weeks, 3 years earlier. Multifocal electroretinograms and visual evoked potentials were recorded using the Visual Evoked Response Imaging System (VERIS) to investigate the nature and site of the neural deficit. The summed retinal response showed a normal a- and b-wave latency and amplitude, however, the retinal topographic mfERGs showed a severe depression of the macular response in both eyes. The cortical topographic multifocal VEP mapping also showed a central depression in the right eye compared with the left. Two-frame motion and pattern custom mfVEP were also measured to assess different forms of cortical processing and especially of motion as nefazodone has previously been associated with image persistence with moving stimuli. The responses to two frame-motion showed signs of abnormality. Thus these results suggest that the primary locus of neural damage is retinal and is likely to have resulted from neurotoxicity. Other competing hypotheses such as hysterical blindness must be ruled out.

http://www.springerlink.com/content/tm47n41xg8305376/
I also found similar vision abnormalities mentioned in a trip report on erowid from someone who did a dangerous experiment with trazodone:

Quote:
That same night at around 10:00 CST, I took eight of my 50mg Trazodone pills. A total of 400mg. I didn't get hungry or tired, at first.. I was just real 'zonked' out. I started getting tired about two hours after ingesting the pills, so I went to bed. When the lights are off in my room, it's very dark. Pretty much pitch-black until my eyes adjust to the lighting situation. This time, my eyes never adjusted. And after about five minutes of looking around into the darkness, I started seeing things. Not really 'hallucinations', but things in my peripheral vision and especially 'under my eyelids'.

I saw shapes (mainly triangles), blobs of color, and lines that seemed to 'come at me'. I stayed awake for four hours dealing with this; it would not go away if I closed my eyes. The only other drug I've experiences something like this on before is DXM, but it was a still a little different. I eventually fell asleep (I can't remember how), and I woke up feeling really weird and that lasted pretty much all day. That's when I realized it wasn't a good idea to abuse the Trazodone.

I believe Amitriptyline and Trazadone are both in the same family and they are both very easy to kick with no withdrawl symtoms.

Re: Trazodone withdrawl

Trazodone is in a chemical class wholly unrelated to any other anti-depressant drug. Including amytriptyline. Amytriptyline is known to cause withdrawl symptoms upon abrupt cessation of use - especially long-term use.
