Drugs and Video Games

Alright this seems like a fun topic for any of you gamers out there. I've definitely thought a lot about this one and SWIM has had a lot of fun with it.

What drugs does SWIY think really enhances a video game experience, and why?

And what game, or type of game, does SWIY most enjoy while on said drugs?

For SWIM, his first choice would have to be marijuana, because it isn't going to keep him up for 10+ hours, and still makes him get into a good game. Almost any kind of game is good for accompanying marijuana smoking whether you're looking for a deep plot experience or a simple puzzle or platform game with bright colors and such. This is a lazy answer, so I'll give a good one next.

The most intense drug, or type of drugs SWIM has played video games on are the psychedelics. 2C-E is the main one for a crazy experience. It makes SWIM feel like he's in the game, all the colors and textures are enhanced and the atmosphere in a well designed game really comes through.

The type of game SWIM likes to play with 2C-E (etc) is something capable of scaring the shit out of him. It's probably not the best idea if SWIY easily loses control or touch with reality on psychedelics, but for SWIM it's one hell of an experience. FEAR and FEAR 2 are insane, the design of the games is amazing and 2C-E really lets SWIM take in the creepy atmosphere. The ultimate game on 2C-E, was probably Half Life 2. The entire game is a work of art, the plot, the graphic style, the transitions, the otherworldly yet still realistic setting of it all... It goes from some sort of SCI FI movie to an action/thriller, to sheer horror, mixing them seamlessly, no interruptions or pauses in actually being able to move around and fuck with anything around you. All done amazingly well with an artistic take on these not seen anywhere else. 2C-E really makes SWIM get into the world. It's exciting, it's mysterious, it's scary, and it's beautiful.

SWIM is a nerd, I guess. But he sees video games as a true art form, at least when the makers put their hearts into it. Video games are at a point now where they are capable of surpassing all other art forms in terms of conveying what is in the creators mind and imagination, with the right spice and a little magic, they can be truly unforgettable.

And fuckin fun man.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

Swim loves, just loves to ingest 200mg-300mg of codeine and play fallout 3. Swim can get wrapped up in this game for hours. Swim likes this game when he's buzzing because its a slower first person shooter/rpg. Its not as fast as the other war type games. Fast games tend to ruin swim's "downer" buzz. Once in a while swim will play bloodshot 2 condemed. Its a pretty creapy game. Makes swim's heart race.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

I don't know if swiy-guys have played Bioshock but Swim says that game on cannabis is great.

The atmosphere, music and storyline are so awesome in this game. The story is that a man in the 40's builds a 'utopia' under the ocean so that everyone could do what the wanted, without the bounds of society. Eventually the scientists find a sea slug that has a sort of genetic enhancing power which is exploited. The new found power was called ADAM. People start abusing adam and eventually go psychotic and start killing each other.

The story is MUCH deeper than Swim explained.

The gameplay is great too. You get to use these powers in game. Another cool feature is the extensive ability to use your enviornment to your advantage. hacking bots/cameras ect.

-SWIM will not explain any further just incase you all want to experience it for yourself. (which he hopes you do, as it is one of his fav's of all time.

The game alone is great but SWIM says adding cannabis or a psychedelic enhances this creepy, yet beautiful game.

Swim has played FEAR 2 and Condemnded 2: bloodshot, but he thought that both games were lacking. He thinks that even though that both were sort of creepy, the gameplay ruined the games for swim. He played FEAR 2 through, but shelved Condemned after an hour of play.

Swim also thinks any opiates and adderal (not combined) and videogames are great. He can get sucked into any game (fallout 3, killzone 2, CoD: WaW, ect.ect.ect.) while on a hefty dose of Hydrocodone or adderal.

Swim is a nerd...

Happy playing.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

SWIM likes to play Oblivion and Call of Duty 4. Marijuana goes great with both, but there are some serious differences in what drugs SWIM would want to be on when playing those different games. SWIM loves to play Oblivion on any sort of downer or narcotic, and agrees with yellow crayon that fast paced games kill a downer buzz. At the same time, SWIM would hate to play COD4 on coke or adderoll (SWIMs 2 favorite stimulants). The speed of the game goes well with these drugs. SWIM has never attempted to play any vidoe games on DMT. SWIM loves Oblivion on shrooms, but gets a terribly negative vibe from COD4 on shrooms. SWIM gets negative vibes from all video games on LSD.

BigPapaLarry added 1 Minutes and 3 Seconds later...

Sorry, Swim would hate to play Oblivion on coke or adderoll, he loves COD4 on them.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

definitely marijuana and call of duty 4 for SWIM, he says he loves that combo
because you can get fully immersed in the experience without being too distracted or slowed down.

SWIM also says that surround sound makes the experience even better

Re: Drugs and Video Games

lol COD 4 OR COD 5(zombie maps) Sometime wcIII are all my choice when combining ddrugs and games.

What drugs mind you? Mj, and alcohol seem to be the best for this swimmer to increase the games fun factor.

Not that he wouldn't love games on speed but, on meth swim feels he has better thdings to ddo than play games.

We should make a thread out to DF gamers and maybe we can all play together!

Re: Drugs and Video Games

Good thread Oxy. SWIM also agrees with the profound effect that psychedelics can have on the video game experience. SWIM noticed some excellent games mentioned here. Bioshock and Fallout 3 in particular. The atmosphere in Bioshock is so immersive, and certain drugs seem to enhance it, making the creepy factor even higher.

SWIM has also been known to play video games on low to medium doses of DXM. The "choppy" effect that DXM has on sight and sound gives creepy games an even creepier feeling.

But it isn't just creepy games that are enhanced by drugs. SWIM used to love playing RPG's while using Adderall and would spend hours customizing characters. Drugs can also enhance the online gaming experience when used in moderation. SWIM gets annoyed with obnoxious people online pretty easily. A bit of euphoria makes them SO much easier to deal with. As long as SWIMmers don't use too much of a drug, it can make the whole online gaming experience more fun in general.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

Cannabis is the best all-round drug for gaming in SWIM's opinion because it doesn't effect your basic motor skills that much. A few drinks can be good for multiplayer games and some games are great fun to play whilst tripping. He's tried playing games whilst on MDMA/ecstasy but he gets distracted too easily and probably ends up yapping away to some stranger about random shit.

Re: Drugs and Video Games

I agree that RPG's can be great on drugs, if the drugs leave SWIY with enough mental prowess to pay attention to plot and such. Marijuana was always good for playing RPG's for SWIM.

But things like Psychedelics... SWIM hasn't exactly tried, but definitely notices he goes into more of a ..survival trip in FPS games and such, which isn't a bad thing. They also seem to make his reflexes and vision much sharper too, or at least it makes him think they are.. o_O If there was more atmosphere to drink in in RPG's they would be fantastic for psychedelics too. SWIM has noticed that some RPG's (final fantasy 6 and 7 in particular) soundtracks are even more fantastic when he's tripping. SWIM'll definitely have to try the next time he finds himself tripping at home!

Oh yeah, and Bioshock is another great game for the atmosphere, you're completely right. The whole underwater metropolis idea is really interesting, especially based in the 1950's or whatever. Water is beautiful in that game, and it really helps create a claustrophobic effect. Some people don't go for that when they're enjoying a drug I suppose, but it's just one of those things that draws you deeper into the imaginary world. SWIM would have been playing that instead of FEAR 2 last time if it didn't have these strange slowdowns whenever enemies come on screen. It really ruins it for him, especially considering he has a quad core pc with plenty of memory and more than adequate other hardware.... but that's the last thing SWIM wants to mess with when he's tripping, troubleshooting. The computer might end up in the parking lot in pieces >=(

Eh.. from all SWIM's read that performance problem doesn't have a fix.. unless he's wrong, please please please do tell. Send me a message and I'll tell him!

Playing against (and losing miserably to) all the gamers on here would be great! (piss me off) =) (>=()

Re: Drugs and Video Games

For the Xbox 360 owners out there i have a great reccomendation for you: Rez.

It's an Xbox Live Arcade game, essentially a shooter. The game itself describes it as Synesthesia (sounds familiar? ) and if you like dance music you should enjoy it.

When SWIM was living in Brighton SWIM came back from a night of clubbing once, buzzing nicely on MDMA, and fired up this game. SWIM had a great time!

Flying a helicopter round on battlefield vietnam is pretty awesome on an MDMA comedown, so I've heard.

I imagine Doom 3 on mushrooms would be an experience to remember. :^|
