What type of filters are safest to use?

Please only swimmers with actual experience, as my Monkey has one shot of dope left till tommorrow and no cotton of any variety save for cigarette filters. He would snort it but there isn't enough left to give him an effect. IV is his only choice. He's got a clean rig, cooker, water etc, and a pack of Camel Lights and one of Marlboro Reds. He knows that cigarette filters are not a good choice, but in a pinch which would SWIY use? He's had a bit of dope and a couple drinks so driving to buy cotton isn't a choice, really. Thanks in advance, he says.

It sounds like your descision has already been made. Marlboro vs. Camels doesn't really matter.

SWIM has used cig filters before, they'll work in a pinch but will induce chemicals into your body you don't want to make a habit of.

Stay safe.

But SWIDarby would say it's safe enough for one shot? The Monkey isn't dopesick right now so he's not desperate, but he wants to be higher than he is. Only reason he mentioned Marlboro vs. Camel is because he's heard (and this may or may not be true) that some brands filter's are made differently, ie: some are safer than others. Forgive this somewhat noobish queston, he been doing dope for 15 years, but has just recently started IVing due to economics and the continued collapse of his cocaine-rotted septum.

Re: If SWIM/SWIY must do it, what cigarette filters are safest?

The rumor about different filters residing on different levels of 'safeness' is untrue.

If SWIM were in your position, yes, SWIM would take the shot via cigarette filter.

It isn't ideal, and isn't as safe as cotton, but as long as SWIY is shooting dope bought from the street, worrying about the cig filter a rather small detail.

Simply don't make a habit of using cig filters.

“Every day you live you learn something new” Unknown

Swim had no Idea that cotton was better than cigarette filters.
Swim used IV route for many years long time ago, and he only used cigarette filters .
Swim had no idea until now that cig filters are not recommended.

Re: If SWIM/SWIY must do it, what cigarette filters are safest?

Cigarette filters contain shards of fiberglass, along with other corrosive materials.

SWIM advises AGAINST them.

SWIM would recommend using 1/4 of a cotton ball, new every time. Do not re-use cottons, as this can result in frayed cotton strands floating in the syringe, leading to 'cotton fever.'

cotton wool works but filters sold seperately for rolling baccy are better than using tailor made cig filters, like 'swan' or 'zig-zag'.

Re: If SWIM/SWIY must do it, what cigarette filters are safest?

In the UK, they give out filters in the packs from the exchange. The best ones to use are the ultra-slim Swan ones, that come pre-wrapped in a little cellophane tube. As they're something near clean, and you can just pop one filter out, each time you need to use one, and the others don't come into contact with anything else. Obviously, you don't need to use a whole filter, swim usually finds that ripping off a third or so is plenty.

Don't use filters from cigarettes, you don't want to get bits of tobacco in with your hit.

And don't, for gods sake, use your teeth to rip the filter in half. Swim sees so many people doing this. There's more bacteria in your mouth than your arse, you know?! So don't use your mouth for short-cuts in the cooking-up process, and don't lick the blood off afterwards!

Swim (and most other UK swimmers) uses these Swan filters 100% of the time, and has never had any problems from them, so she would say that these are the best ones to use.

Alternatively, a ripped off piece of Tampax would suffice, as these are designed specifically so that pieces of cotton do not break off, due to the risk of toxic shock etc. But most female heroin addicts don't have periods, so they're unlikely to have tampons available...

Either way, wash your hands first, make sure it's all nice and clean, whatever you use, and remember all the usual safe injecting practices.

Don't think tobacco products are included in it, but may be wrong. Maybe they're deemed so harmful that there can be no "safe" control over ingredients? I mean, considering the cyanide content etc, how do you regulate something like that?

Re: If SWIM/SWIY must do it, what cigarette filters are safest?

Well, labmonkey just woke up from a deep coma, and had this to say:
"Last night SWIM did that last shot using a Camel light filter for a cotton. He got high as expected but also felt a general "off" feeling, a biut of a malaise. His temperature went up about 1 degree and he slept poorly until about 3 hours ago where he passed out hard. He doesn't know if this was the cig filter causing this, or the fact he mixed alcohol with his dope for the firt time in over a month, but he only had 4 beers, so he doesn't think it was that. It wasn't the dope itself, as he had been shooting and smoking from that bag all evening. Maybe it was placebo effect due to his fears of using a cig filter, who knows? There's no issues at the injection site, and he did his shot properly, so its either placebo, the booze or the cig filter, or a combination thereof."

SWIM has shot up with cigarette filters many times in a pinch and never felt anything bad from it, but as others have said, they contain fiberglass and over the long run can definitely cause heart problems.

The only other issue SWIM can think of, maybe cigarettes with menthol in the filter would be especially bad to use?

SWIY did spend quite a bit of time worrying about the filter, so SWIM believes it was placebo. SWIM has used cig filter many times with no problem.

Can anyone find a source for this?

As far as swim can tell, filters are made of cellulose acetate fibre - the ones used for hand rolling, as described in swim's above post, and most other built-in filter tips.

Where does this "fiberglass" idea come from? Swim's not heard it before in the UK, and swim would be slightly surprised that the exchanges would choose to give out something like that, for the purposes of harm reduction...

Incidentally, the best filters to use are these Sterifilts. They fit onto the end of your syringe, and you just suck the liquid up through them, then remove it afterwards. It also serves to protect the end of your pin from getting damaged against whatever you're cooking up in.

From Exchange Supplies' website: "The sterifilt is the world's first purpose made single-use filter for illicit drugs. The polypropelene membrane filters particles but retains virtually no drug. The main reason cigarette and other makeshift filters are reused is that they retain around 10% of the drug – the sterifilt retains no fluid, and no drug so there is no incentive for re-use. In addition, it loses strength when wet, making re-use difficult."

Although swim has come across these sterifilts before, she doesn't know how widely available these are in exchanges, her local NXE, for example, doesn't supply them. Sadly the exchanges are bound by financial constraints just like everyone else, when deciding whether or not to stock a new product. But unlike everyone else, these decisions to stock products can help save lives...

Hello government officials. Funding? Anyone? No..?

H

Yeah swim has used cotton from cigs before but couldn't really say if there was a better or worse one but it did the trick. Swim mainly uses the cotton from q tips or cotton balls he just keeps a cotton ball in a CD case in his car just in case. At the needle exchange in Philly they give you a sealed bag with about 20 some cottons in it, there little balls that are the perfect size, there the shit.

i heard that filters are made of fibreglass years ago but im pretty damn sure they aint made of fibreglass.....its really dangerous to inhale fibreglass, i know this as i used to be in the building trade doing stud partition walls and you must wear a mask when dealing with this material.

Helene - SWIM had heard it from many different junkies, and also at the needle exchange he went to. They told him it's dangerous to use cigarette filters because of the particles in them (which SWIM recalls being "fiberglass," but maybe not). Never saw a scientific study or anything about it though, for all SWIM knows it is an urban legend. He just trusted the needle exchange people and tried to avoid using them as much as possible.

Swim smokes Newports and has used their filters many, many times to no (noticeably) bad effect.

As long as the filter is rolled up tightly into a ball, I wouldn't think that any fiberglass would go through, but I don't know, maybe a small amount.
