This swimmer I know came up with this after receiving a gift of a cannabis stem that was mostly leaves, seed and stalk. After separating off the stuff worth smoking, and putting the seeds to one side, he soaked the remaining leaves and stalk in a bottle of vodka. Its been soaking for a few days now and he advises me that its certainly picked up a bit of that distinctive flavour, and gives a subtly different buzz to vodka. He plans to let it soak for awhile longer.

He says he decided to do it as he remembered reading somewhere about it being a good way to use bits of stalk and leaves that weren't really worth smoking.

It's called Green Dragon

Green Dragon is an alcoholic beverage made by leaching the buds, leaves, or stems of the cannabis plant in a high-proof alcohol, most commonly gin.The buds are the most efficient part to dissolve as they contain the most THC of the Cannabis plant. The THC dissolves into the alcohol resulting in a dark green or brown liquid.

Baking or "drying" the dry buds and leaves prior to adding them to the alcohol in either method increases the potency of the resulting preparation[1][2]. The two main methods of decarboxylation involve heat and/or light. The higher the alcohol percentage of the solvent, the more efficiently the THC will be extracted.

AFASK, THC will not be converted into TCHA (active compound that gets one high) without some sort of heat agitation. Although swim could be wrong.

When swim made green dragon he took the buds and heated them in the microwave on 20 second intervals to heat them up sufficiently, then added his high proof alcohol, preferably above 70% (140 proof) and heated gradually and carefully over a stove, removed the buds (which still gave swim a nice high when smoked in a hookah) then poured into a glass bottle and left the bottle to cool to room temp, then he kept it in a fridge for around a week. The result was a nice bright green drink which was hella strong and hella stoning. =P

Alcohol dissolves both polar and non-polar and tend to dissolve other plant matters into the solution. The extraction is better done with alkane solvent like pentane.

Other things, such as anhydrous electronics grade isopropyl alcohol can be used, then evaporated completely. Isopropyl alcohol is not suitable for drinking, but a trace amount that maybe left behind as a residue is not harmful.

40-50% alcohol is not a particularly good solvent for non-polar matter. For essential oil extraction, the solvent can be tested by mixing it with cooking oil. A good solvent would blend completely with oil. Not so good one would form two layers.

This swimmer wasn't so worried about getting the most out of his unsmokeables - he was more going after a novelty. He's happy with what he's got, but in future he may try it "by the book" - thanks for the info

I'm considering writing a short story about cannabis vodka. Here's an extract:

Myself and a couple of friends decided to have a few green dragons last night before going to a party, and all three found the experience most enjoyable. The alcohol effects kicked in first, with the effects of the cannabis coming on more gradually. The alcohol effects also tailed off earlier, leaving us feeling more stoned than drunk towards the tail end - at least, until we switched to other alcohol beverages.

The experience was a pleasing mix of the two drugs, and while the alcohol was the primary partner in the equation, its effects were altered significantly by the cannabis, which made us feel floaty, sociable and relaxed. I would highly recommend it as a recipe for those who enjoy mixing the two drugs

SWIM also made a couple of bottles of Green Dragon by just immersing the plant material in the vodka over a period of a few weeks. After harvesting most of the buds SWIM would put the remaining smaller pieces in the mix. It turned out very well, also seeking more a novelty product than a high. Makes great gifts with wicked labels on. SWIMM also know a person who has problems with sleeping and nervousness. SWIM regularly supplies her with a bottle of the Green dragon and she claims a tot a day at night does more healing than anything she had ever spent money on - and its not really addictive as she can go without it for some time before the insomnia returns.
SWIM has even added a bit of wormwood and aniseed as well as sugar to some mixed for the fun of it.
